This year, I’ll be making more videos like this, including movie reviews, gaming, various topics. For most of these, I will be going back to my traditional scripted format, where I write/organize what I’ll say, rather than doing it off-the-cuff like the podcast format. I feel I’m at my best this way. Unfortunately that means the podcast will not be continued. But Justin and Kieran will continue producing and editing. Justin will mostly be focused on Screenwave projects and Kieran is focused on his streaming channel.
I don't miss naivety... I miss my innocence. I was never overly naive... probably not at all. But I have definitely become more critical... and cynical since I turned 40. That was three years ago.
"I miss being more naive and less critical." The true differentiation between childhood and adulthood. Again with another fantastically nostalgic video.
“What Nostalgia Means to Me.” Nostalgia is the reason/problem why you James don’t accept the Jurassic Park sequels or even the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Or even Godzilla 2014.
"Whenever you're having a bad day, you can turn to something familliar for just a little comfort, no matter who you are i know that you and i could find someting to talk about that we both remembered. That's how nostalgia connects people" ~ James Rolfe
I know this is gonna sound corny but this video literally touched my heart and made me feel great and that is so wonderful since I'm having a not so great day at work
“What Nostalgia Means to Me.” Nostalgia is the reason why you James don’t accept the Jurassic Park sequels or even the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Or even Godzilla 2014.
James Rolfe in his truest form and his passion definitely shines through when he talks about it and the way he looks at his collection. As a film maker I shared a lot of the same experiences and vhs memories one way or another and this video hit home!
Wow, to listen James say his youngest child likes to play "Video Store" made me so happy, it shows old things can still have the same charm for young people that they had when they were the only things around.
This is my favorite video James has done since AVGN "Polybius." Its so fascinating to hear someone describe their love for physical media. Bravo, Mr. Rolfe. 🎬
@@doctorfeinstone6524 Well, there was the Monster Madness stuff that was clearly more so performed by him, but not so much by him. This video was propper James. This was clearly his pet project. So i get what they meant.
I’m the same age as James and this was very emotional to watch. Growing up in the 80s and 90s was such a pleasure and it makes me sad how much the world keeps changing. The nostalgia craze keeps raging on like an inferno. I’d give anything to revisit the 90s again. Thanks James, this was a really nice video. 👍
Absolutely and the fact that the Internet has taken out a lot of them mystery is absolutely on point. But ironically enough the Internet is how we are even watching this
This really takes me back. Especially the various Blockbuster sleeves in the background. I worked at Blockbuster from 1999-2004 so I remember those very well and miss walking the isles. Some people will never know that joy.
Browsing video store aisles and going to a video arcade... some experiences that are impossible to really understand the special joy of unless you lived through that era.
This one hits differently for me. I turned 40 last year and most everything that James loves and experienced as a kid I also remember fondly. I love movies and video games along with buying CDs back in the day and completing collections for bands and actors. Digital has changed things and yes convenience is nice but I will always pickup my favorite bands new album like Metallica or AC/DC.
"I just miss being more naive and less critical" almost got me to start tearing up. I don't know why I needed to hear that, but I think so many of us these days do. You captured what's most amazing about the earliest years of our lives in one sentence, I think.
I loved this video. I just turned 40, and this took me back. Every Friday night pizza and video store. I would look around and leave with a movie I had seen a hundred times. Like Ernest goes to camp or E.T. I smiled the whole video!
When he pointed out that his original review of Simon's Quest is now older than the game was when he reviewed it, that's when I realised AVGN was my nostalgia.
This was a great video and brought back a lot of nostalgia for me just based on your stories. As much as I love having all my music at my finger tips, it makes it all that much harder to find something to listen to for some reason. To scroll through hundreds of movies on the different streaming choices makes it that much harder to find something to watch for that same reason. But going to a video store meant that movie/movies that you rented were going to be watched and that was it. When I saw your Iron Maiden CD's it reminded me of when I'd buy a Maiden album and put it on and listen to it front to back while playing my NES. I'd play my games and take in the album and eventually gain an appreciation for the whole album and not just the big hit. Keep up the great work and I appreciate what you've done.
This tickled my nostalgia for old cinemasacre. It’s hard to believe that some of us have been watching James so long that he holds a nostalgic place in our hearts. Again James thanks and keep doing this!
*This video made me cry, not only tears of the nostalgia of my youth, but also because I have a large collection of movies, music, and games myself, and I just realized that I have no family or children to leave them to :'( I'm so happy that you have children to leave your lifetime collection to. Remember, what is most important in the end is that it's not what you have, but who you have to share it with. Family is the most important thing in the world..*
Dude, just wanna say I've been watching your videos (Angry videogame Nerd) since I can't remember. The nostalgia factor of course was present from the beginning. But this, this is something special. This is beautiful. Thank you sincerely for this video.
Binge-watching is definitely convenient, but in the old days when we got only one new episode of a show each week, it not only allowed us to savor the shows and remember them better, but we were also all on the same page as we discussed our favorite shows. Nowadays, people watch at all kinds of different paces, leading to the common question of “How far along are you in the show?” Sure there was some of that going on before with re-runs, but now it’s all over the place, with so much content that’s available for instant streaming.
For what it's worth, there are still new series that get weekly episodes; at least on TV. I remember most anime (Japanese cartoons) still working that way at least as of a few years ago.
unlimited media consumption isn't healthy for us? Limitations on consumption amount actually enhance experiences? that's the opposite of what the world today tells us
In the UK for many years, we only had 4 TV channels to choose from. Soap operas were hugely popular then so we’d all follow the same show and talk about it at work the next day. Now it’s all changed of course.
Exactly the same memories James, i am George Mario from Athens Greece and i had the same childhood as you. The video clubs, the vhs tapes, the recording, the tv guides with circles over the movies, everything was all the same. How do i miss rhe Saturday night visit at the video club (store) so i can keep the tape for one more day, because every sunday the stores were closed! It was the BEST times ever!!!!!
THIS is why James is my favorite guy on the internet! His Nostalgia for the past, just like me! I also love how James is introducing his daughters of how things were in the past! That is AWESOME! Keep up the great work James! I will ALWAYS SUPPORT YOU!

You're very right, which makes it even more imperssive how James taps into his psychotic/angry side when doing AVGN, because it couldn't be further from his actual persona. I have a dream to meet and chat with him one day. Probably won't happen, but he's helped many of us in many ways.
I love how detailed and insightful he is about his memories and random things in the past that I forgot about. Like looking through the tv guide / newspaper and recording random shows on vhs. There is no content like that out there in mainstream tv / movies / documentaries. That's still the one great thing about youtube; Everyday people making content they other or everyday people can relate to or share with each other, that hasn't been processed through Hollywood or a production company. And it also allows the everyday person to work on their talents and use TH-cam as a platform to share it with.
LIKED and FAVORITED because this is one of those videos that can be watched and enjoyed over and over again or when one wants to relive some nostalgic memories. All the best, James. :)
This... this is like a javelin to the heart for me. I couldn't possibly be more envious that you've managed to hold onto the magic of your childhood. I can't quite get engrossed in things, like I used to. It's like a part of me, a big part, has been ripped out over the years.
This hit so close to home. I'm approaching my 30's and I can relate to everything that James is saying here. I can't even begin to explain the importance he's had to me, and countless others, when it comes to finding your own path and cherishing those otherwordly memories. Sometimes I fear that I've lost that childhood magic of discovering new movies and music, but videos like this makes me realize I've only scratched the surface. I've been listening to Iron Maiden's Senjustu a lot lately, and it feels so great to hear James put perfect words to my own feelings about growing up in a changing world.
I love these sensitive videos with James, where he's sincerely expressing something that he loves. For all of us nostalgia means different things, and for me, watching early AVGN seasons takes me right back to my childhood. To me, AVGN is as nostalgic as Disney's Aladdin or Lion King. I had totally forgotten about those Monsters books until you showed them. Took me back instantly. Those are what cemented my love of horror as a kid in the 80s. You captured every emotion i feel about movies and vhs. Thanks so much James, for this video and trip down memory lane.
We spend most of childhood wishing we were adults. Then when we're adults we dream of being children again. Something human about always longing for something you can't have.
I really miss going to the video store walking around looking and choosing, to me that was part of the fun much better days long gone but not forgotten ❤️
I say this with the absolute utmost respect as a fellow media archiver: you haven't just created a shrine, you have created a museum. A preservation of a golden past, nearly forgotten by even those who lived through it. You are living the dream, to have a video rental store in your own home. What an absolutely beautiful and wonderful video, thank you for sharing your collection with us James.
This is probably my favorite video James has produced in years. His passion really shows, and I hope he continues in this direction as opposed to just pumping out content for the sake of content.
I’ve never had a chance to decorate the video store style room, because I had too much VHS tapes in my collection. A lot of these I have to get rid of, because I got too much space for it. So I did transfer them to DVD and digital, and give the VHS away.
as always James.. really appreciate the nostalgic journeys you take us. your description of how you felt as a child is so close to home, it almost brought me to tears.
That's what the little labels were for, my dad labelled each one with a number and catalogued them in a folder of plastic wallets, had an index of about 500 movies
sentimental nostalgic stuff with James are always a hit. it makes me feel like I know him personally, even though I live in the other side of the world.
Visiting the local video store on Saturday night with my dad is one of the most nostalgic memories of my childhood. Checking the immense amount of cassette boxes was quite fun. In the end, my dad and I would stay awaken until late to finish as many movies as possible before returning them, because of course we would rent much more than we could possibly handle.
This truly is your best video. It encompasses everything that your about and the gentleness of your delivery is Bob Rossian. I want to get more of this but you've already done it so I'm not sure how to request it
wow, this video really got me teary eyed, thank you for this James, sometimes we have to look at the past to see how far we have come, and re-live those memories that made us who we are today.
i think we might see the return of the video store on a larger scale within the next 10 years, obviously not blockbuster big, but something, because a lot of people are getting fed up with streaming services being so expensive and taking stuff off their platforms. it wont be something everyone uses, but with the resurgence of people collecting VHS tapes, and people hating streaming, we might see a few niche stores pop up
We are brothers from a different mother...My childhood was very similar. I enjoyed going to Blockbuster, but it was a treat going to the Ma and Pa video stores with the more obscure titles. I created my own box art and stickers too. I miss being a kid in the eighties.
This year, I’ll be making more videos like this, including movie reviews, gaming, various topics. Glad to see you return to form, James. These are the kinds of videos that make Cinemassacre what it really is, and has always been.
I really miss going to the video store walking around looking and choosing, to me that was part of the fun much better days long gone but not forgotten ❤️
Those Friday nights at Blockbuster and JC Video were the best

This video made me cry. As somebody who has watched your videos for over ten years. Thank you for everything

"I regret cutting out the commercials because sometimes, that was the best part."
Truer words have never been spoken.
No man in history has ever been such a master at taking one back to the past, except James. James is a legend.
Videos like this are reasons why I love and respect James so much, he is still one of the few genuine TH-camrs left.
This was a really charming watch. I'm glad you plan to do more of these
This is probably my favorite video James has produced in years. His passion really shows, and I hope he continues in this direction as opposed to just pumping out content for the sake of content.
one of your best videos, made me actually shed few tears. Thank you.
If James' tape collection was an actual video store, I'd work there overtime.
Same here
Work there? I’d volunteer!
I’ve never had a chance to decorate the video store style room, because I had too much VHS tapes in my collection. A lot of these I have to get rid of, because I got too much space for it. So I did transfer them to DVD and digital, and give the VHS away.
I like this kind of scripted & edited videos more than people just talking in a room. Keep it up 👍.

as always James.. really appreciate the nostalgic journeys you take us. your description of how you felt as a child is so close to home, it almost brought me to tears.
I'm so glad there's no Justin in this! Your shows are MUCH better without him involved!
I'll give this a watch, thanks James!
The fact James was marking the dates on his blank VHS tapes back in the day is actually kinda smart, ngl
Beautiful video, man

That's what the little labels were for, my dad labelled each one with a number and catalogued them in a folder of plastic wallets, had an index of about 500 movies
As an archivist I wish people would do that more on their VHS tapes I have to rely on commercials to figure out the year.
i love u man, u made me relive all this best memories from my past in my head so many times i dont even know how to thank you enough RESPECT
sentimental nostalgic stuff with James are always a hit. it makes me feel like I know him personally, even though I live in the other side of the world.
I want to get more of this but you've already done it so I'm not sure how to request it
Longtime fan, James! Love these types of uploads!
You're an innovator and have done so much great content!
This just made me really appreciate the simple things, comforting and sentimental.
Very emotional, great video collection and the way you talk about it makes it extra special,THANK YOU
wow, this video really got me teary eyed, thank you for this James, sometimes we have to look at the past to see how far we have come, and re-live those memories that made us who we are today.
Ah... memories of being 10 years old in the early 90s and my mom bringing us a movie or video game from the video rental store every week.
i think we might see the return of the video store on a larger scale within the next 10 years, obviously not blockbuster big, but something, because a lot of people are getting fed up with streaming services being so expensive and taking stuff off their platforms. it wont be something everyone uses, but with the resurgence of people collecting VHS tapes, and people hating streaming, we might see a few niche stores pop up
We are brothers from a different mother...My childhood was very similar. I enjoyed going to Blockbuster, but it was a treat going to the Ma and Pa video stores with the more obscure titles. I created my own box art and stickers too. I miss being a kid in the eighties.
