    Childhood memories. When the mini trail 50 came out, my dad bought one for my brothers and I. We learned how to ride because of the trail 50.

      Yes sir... I prefer the hard tail z50s. ride one every day on my acreage. I'll add this little Booger to the arsenal.

    Back in the late 60.'s my dad bought me one of these for my birthday. Back then it was called the Mini trail 50, it had a 3 speed Auto clutch and was the talk of the neighborhood

      Oh yes, then on to the Trail 70, after that I got a XR-75 and never looked back.
      But those little trail bikes were the beginners choice and seemed indestructible.

      The Trail 5o has spawned countless clones and is probably the most iconic mini-bike in history. The style was sold in India, Pakistan and China for decades as reliable transportation of the working class and immigrants alike....much like a Toyota Corolla is around the world, today.
      Sales to youth, were a fraction of what they were sold to adults in the US.
      In the US, unless you were well off, kids got JC Penney and Montgomery Wards mini-bikes. Adults, seniors and retirees got Trail 50's and Trail 90's.

    I test rode a Grom recently and loved it. However when I saw this on the Honda website I went with the heart over my head. Put a deposit down and she comes in July! In Australia it was an extra $1500... Build quality is supposed to be a significant step up though.

    • @American_Hustler
      @American_Hustler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jimmy W cool! I own a ruckus and I only get to use it twice a month at most is kind of slow at 49cc. I was thinking of getting a Grom but I would rather get this.

  • @THR33SIXX3MPYR
    @THR33SIXX3MPYR 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    People said the Grom was overpriced when it came out, but that didn't stop it from selling like light bars at a lifted truck meet. Anyone complaining about the price probably won't buy one anyway.

    • @Skyerzen
      @Skyerzen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you missed the point. I was commenting on how cheap the MT09 is for it's displacement. I was about to ride when I typed that, I don't think it was a fully developed thought.

    So cool and a blast to ride......those that balk at the price, it is what it is.
    Either buy one or don't......but I can tell you they are a blast to ride and I'm so glad Honda is building retro bikes like this.
    Well worth the $$ to me.

  • @Jellyrollrider

    I love my HONDA MB5! It is the most fun i've ever had, on any bike i've owned over the decades, both large and small. The MB5 was a 2-stroke, 5-speed, 7.1 HP, 50cc screamer, with a cool little powerband, and a top speed of 53 MPH. Looks like a mini Ducati... a work of art. I get tons more looks and comments than my Honda Monkey 125, even though I love this Monkey bike too. The 2 stroke engine sound is awesome on the MB5! Cost $599 brand new back in 1982, the only year the MB5 was exported to the U.S.

    I expect this video to get a million views. I see the price tag is turning a lot of people off. I think it is over priced too, but since no one wants to pay that amount, I guess I don’t have to worry about it being hard to find at a dealership.

    Talk about bringing back childhood memories! My Dad brought us home a red Honda Monkey 50 from Japan back in 1971. He loaded it onto a USAF C-141 disassembled in all of his duffle bags (He was the Loadmaster). The following year he brought home the DAX, known as the Trail 70 here in the states. Not sure if I'll buy one of the new ones at that crazy price tag, since it will be a toy. But will be watching the used market in a couple of years as well.

    Have almost no experience riding. Had a 650 dirt bike 14 years ago but only had for a month. Ive owned this bike for 1.5 days and i bet i could already pass the skills test for my license. I am surprised how easy this little bike is to ride. Been practicing my maneuvering, fast starts and stops, swerving, etc in a nearby empty parking lot.

      Pak Pik Puk Go to hell Honda. With your back stabbing 2019 "Monkey Bike." When u see manufactures like this, mocking u, u can pray4 their destruction.
      If u 5 star review them, or merely sit on the fence, &move on? while some1 is getting raped? how hard is it 2ask Yeah 2send His angels instead - 2destroy that person? He will honor that. In 1994 I devastated California with most expensive disaster in USA history. Northridge earthquake. Why? I was legitimately angry with California. Yah honored that. I don't care what your name is. Or how big u think u are.
      I'm the engineer king of kings so believe me I know. (with motorcycles)
      My last bike was XL 600r 1987. I quit riding when all manufactures started 2go 2absolute hell. The engineers are literally demons, fallen angels, back stabbing humans &their bikes CURSED. These are really stupid, poisonous people . Beings.
      Everything's engineered 2suck in money. All sorts of defincientcies deliberately engineered in2 fuel their wallets while hordes of frosting plastered on bikes 2cater 2glamour appeal. The whole industry is garbage absolute irreparable venom now. I remember when@ some point they didn't even list specifications anymore. Thnew breed of buyers are (poisonous) women mentality. (fashion) ..&Gut feel.
      Thbikes are grossly overpriced it's hiway robbery. $12,000 for a 450cc trail bike.
      Satan as always leads. Unlike me, he has a massive fetish4 new stuff as he puts it. We spoke with him about this just last year. That's bcuz he was never satisfied 2begin with which is why he fell. Yahweh told us he was ALWAYS insecure. He was Yahweh's 1st ever created son.
      Bikes stopped getting better. Began looking better instead. Feeling better while performing far worse. Hell now days u can't repair a bike. U have2 dig thru a few Rubics cubes 1st in manuals written by very, very evil people sit in a chair 8 hours figuring out how 2better pack wallets.
      When u buy a bike now, u buying an advertisement deliberately de engineered 2make u crave next year's model. So u can be a complete whining loser like Satan.
      That crazy monkey bike with the insanely small wheels is gonna hurt a lot of people. That thing can go 60mph. 20mph is already very fast 2get thrown off a bike. Imagine running as fast as u possibly can into a tree. That's 20 mph 4u. I think all those head trauma guys weren't put in the hospital bcuz of motorcycles. I think it's bcuz of suspension. Or lack of it. That& 800 lb bikes. It took three guys 2 keep a Harley upright crossing a stone creek at 1mph.
      A nurse told me its all biker head trauma now days.
      All these guys have2 do is hit a small branch, pothole or rock.
      I hit 1 rock the size of a fist @45mph. I landed with my front wheel leaving S shaped black marks on the road as it slammed side2 side& down I went worst crash I ever had.
      There's no reason4 a bike 2b over 300lbs &240lbs is easily achievable. But it should have suspension like "dirt" bike, ergonomic riding position XL600 configuration.
      Satanist engineering works like this: u engineer a bicycle, then lock that away, &come out with 12 models all designed 2b a compromise of the obvious (maybenot2u) ideal.
      Well, obvious 2me, I was the bicycle spark plug king of kings beginning 1986. I, we became tired of running with thSatanists. Especially when u people began 5star reviewing them. Hell with that.
      So I hear Honda "Gold Wing" is 90lbs lighter this year.
      How heavy is that thing now? Any1 know?
      If I even worked as a janitor at Honda, thLord WOULDNT have it. Don't even mention them.
      In heaven everything is all run by magnets &crystals. Free energy. Gas power monkey bikes Satan maintains 2enforce his money chip.
      Yahweh was explaining to us Satan enjoys mocking people who buy his product.
      Honestly do not even touch these people.

    FUN to ride around in our big backyard, and some trails into the woods, or even down the road a short way to the convenience store.

    all these "overpriced" comments and people wonder why Honda does not import Asian market cool bikes like the CBR250RR to the USA anymore. Ofcourse its expensive because inflation applies to factory overheads too. You don't earn the same pay you did 10 years ago so you cannot expect new products to be priced on par with a 6 year old product

    • @ivyivyivy316
      @ivyivyivy316 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      cagednm69 Inflation is a thing but this 125 is literaly the same price as the 300 bikes. Plus all its competitors are cheaper.

    • @ivyivyivy316
      @ivyivyivy316 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      cagednm69 There are plently of leftover Ninja 300s and R3s going for $4k. Of corse they skimped out on certain parts on those bikes, but they are still better than the Monkey in every measurable way.

    • @andrewmack2161
      @andrewmack2161 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      cagednm69, are you sure they're a similar price in Asia...Most stuff is much cheaper to buy there.

    • @cagednm69
      @cagednm69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Mack they're built in Asia and hence cheaper. The minute they export it the import duties make it expensive. Honda makes cbr250rr in Indonesia for $5k but charges Japan as much as $9k

    • @andrewmack2161
      @andrewmack2161 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not so sure that the price difference is about Tax/Duties, as much as it's about how much the Japanese market will pay. It's the same with most western countries. For many years it was cheaper to buy a new bike/car in Germany or Holland and import it to the UK, where bikes were a bit more expensive. Tax/Duties was only a portion of the price difference and wasn't enough to justify all the price difference then.

  • @somedude1590

      Mach Smith ive never seen any grom for 2k. Cheapest was like 2400 and it had some miles on it. And now with the chinese tarrifs the china grom clones dissappearing are going to make the groms hold their value even more

This thing is going to be SO awesome with a Dinger Built intake, a sweet, lower profile, high clearance, thoaty exhaust, some pro taper bars, and maxxis 6024s! So legit! Lets get some round number plates for the sides too!

    I had a honda mini-bike like this one in 1974. It wasn't 125cc though, I think it was something smaller. Seat looks the same. Mine was virtually indestructible, I jumped it all the time, crashed it a lot and it held up.

      ThroughFallenEyes I mean, I'm decently sure a company as big and well regarded as Honda designed the pipe to not burn you. Maybe hold judgement until you actually sit on one? They wouldn't make a bike you couldn't sit on. How daft do you think that sounds?

      T0BBi94 so you’d buy one? I think what people are trying to say is that this is priced so high that it isn’t too far from a “real” motorcycle. I like it for the nostalgia factor but I think 4K just for nostalgia would be a tough sell for most. Then again I’m sure it has to do more with the emissions crap driving up the price. The off highway equivalent is like $2800 from Honda.

  • @ducfandan1117
    @ducfandan1117 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The want is strong. I’ll admit, would be much more interested at more like the $3k mark. And ABS on a Monkey bike is, well, a pointless waste of money. At least it’s optional so the buyer can save their $200 to put toward a smaller and lighter pipe.
    Overall, super cool, really want one, $4k is a bit steep. Looking forward to the full review!

    Hmmm the groms got that single mono rear spring ... so this is probably heavier than a grom si ? Is it meant to be more of a trail rated thing or about the same as the grom... For the $500 savings you might as well go for the grom unless your just want that retro thing going on... Or are they jacking up the price on the Grom too ?

  • @charlesfoster141

    I love the new Honda Monkey and may buy one in the aftermarket for $2000 or so. The 1969 Z50 Minitrail came out when I was 15 years old. The $235 price was impossible for a kid to pay. A new CB450 was $1,095 in 1970 and I got one for that price. A CB750 was $1,395 briefly but soon jumped.to $1,695, just $200 less than a new VW Bug that year. If you adjust the original Minitrail price for inflation today it would be $1,645, still insurmountable for a kid. So why $4,000 or more for this new Monkey bike. We are talking about 2.43 times the adjusted price for what many might say is the same machine. Not hardly. Here is the scoop. First you have a 125cc engine with a 4 speed manual clutch. Certainly 2.4 times better than a 49cc Minitrail. Second, you have fuel injection and disc brakes with ABS. You have rear shocks, you have LED lights and turn signals. You have the power and speed sufficient to ride legally on the streets at 40mph all day with more to spare. An adult fits comfortably. The oil capacity is 2 litters in the engine and upper tank. You have a wet clutch. There is a speedometer with many indicator lights. It has electric start. The list goes on. If this exact bike had been available in 1969 the price would have been $571.43 or $4,000 in today's money. $571.43 was a lot of money in 1969, but a new Honda CB350 was a mere $200 less than the 450 at $895.00 and a CB175 was $795. The CB125 was $725 so you can see that this new Monkey is fairly priced considering the past. Especially since it has features like fuel injection, ABS and dual disc brakes. Finally, and this is the grand issue. The Japanese no longer toil as a third world nation as they did in 1969. The Japanese economy has inflated far more than has the USA economy. So there you have it. The only issue to me is did Honda target the right bike to the market. There is two answers. In 1969 the little Z50 Minitrail was "state of the art, light years ahead" of Rupp or any other minibikeguy in the USA. This new Monkey likewise follows that tradition. My second thought is what if Honda had exactly copied the 1969 Z50-AK1 and offered it street legal as original for the $1,645 adjusted price? Which would sell more copies? Well, I for one would buy the replica at $1,645 brand new opposed to the 2019 Monkey, but would wish I had both lol. By the way, if you did the math I am almost 65 years old now and lived it all and owned them all over the years. I was founder of the International Mini-bike Association and communicated with Mini-bike enthusiasts from every corner of the earth in that capacity. 😊😊

    Let me tell you why this bike will sell (they're gonna sell one to me anyway). I turned fifty years old this year, most of my family are dead and gone, been through ups and downs in life and facing the backside of it, it's hard to find things that make me happy. I can't afford a Vette, don't wanna chase women, and always wanted a Z50 as a kid. Never got one. So this just makes me smile, it makes me happy just thinking about this. I can afford it, it'll make me happy, so just shut up and tell me who has the first one available so I know who to throw my money at!
    Let me have this little slice of happiness, won't you?

    Cool bike. The original Honda monkey bike (Z50) shared an engine with a massive list of other honda products, which spawned a ridiculous modding culture that's still around today. I would love to see the same thing happen to the Grom/2019 Monkey.
