Motivation Interviewing with Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence
Scenario 2: "Vanessa's Second Meeting with a Hospital Social Worker"
    Dr. Stéphanie Wahab
Motivational interviewing is a guiding approach to communication used to support individuals to make changes in their lives. The MI approach focuses on evoking and eliciting rather than telling or advising. Individuals are supported to tap into their own motivations for change. The scenarios included in this training DVD demonstrate the use of MI with survivors of intimate partner violence. Demonstrations of the spirit of MI and numerous skills including but not limited to the opening strategies (OARS), setting a focus for work, eliciting change talk, exploring ambivalence, dancing with discord, and providing information are demonstrated throughout.

I especially like how the sw/t did not guide or lead the client but rather listened to what the client was saying about what worked best for her; this is vital in creating a foundation for trust and also to facilitate goal planning.

I cannot express how thrilled I am to find these videos! I am a program manager for a domestic violence advocacy center and it is so hard to find real-life examples of an advocate in action... not a therapist, or attorney, or police officer, etc. These are now my go-to for training new staff. Thank you!!!

I would hope that the sw and t approaches are effectively if not the same at least similar; regarding those other roles, one can hope they will ultimately adopt such a client- and stengths-based approach such as this.

Well done. As a beginner at MI I found this video quite useful!

How difficult it seems to follow the protocol and also absorb the information the client is telling you (I have poor memory and perfectionism lol).
My professor says eventually MI just becomes a part of you after practicing it.

Could have done more simple and complex reflections. There were some double-barrelled questions.

True but isn’t motivational interviewing not about diagnosing?

      ...or is it about you?
