In this Student Spotlight lesson, I will help Nolan correct some issues he is having doing a rapid alternate picking lick across strings.
There are a few issues that I will cover in the video, including planting and how to keep the angle of your picking consistent across strings.
In his playing example, you can see that Nolan has a good pick angle when he starts out on the high E string. However, as he descends across the scale, he deviates his wrist as he moves towards the low E string. This not only creates unnecessary tension in his wrist, but it also changes the picking angle to almost parallel to the strings by the end of the scale run.
This means the resistance that each string gives against the pick is changing for every string. If he can keep that angle consistent, the string attack and resistance will feel the same for every string.
This is accomplished with a very small amount of movement from the elbow. Keep in mind that actual pick stroke itself should come from the wrist and forearm. The elbow only helps controls which string you are playing on. #studentspotlight #gl365academy #alternatepicking
I hope this helps Nolan! Carl...

Very helpful. Also (just my opinion) I believe Nolan has a very high arch in his action in his left hand that could also be slowing him down a bit too. Look at the instructors left hand arch over the fret board and how close he keeps those fingers to the board. Not having those fingers arched and bent so high.. But this also comes with time and practice getting comfortable with your picking. Keep rockin y'all!!👍

Good to see another Student Spotlight! Great video as usual, Carl! I've been wanting to learn how to solo over chord changes, I've seen some videos by others but nothing that really makes any sense. Would that be a good video topic or is that discussed in the academy?

Hey Carl, was wondering if you could do Brighton Rock off Queen's Sheer Heart Attack album. There's no good videos for it. Thanks

I recently watched Carl's video on how to play Radiohead's "Street Spirit." Something that really caught my attention was that you said to focus on picking in the direction of the next string that we intend to play. Why is this important? Is there a name for it (sweep, alternate, directional picking)?
I naturally pick in both directions but I've never really thought about it. I would consider Street Spirit a relatively slow, simple song, but being strict about my picking direction made it MUCH more difficult to learn. However, I'm sure there is some benefit and/or rhyme or reason to this. Can someone please demystify this for me?
    Thank you!
