Stapleton also came to the rink late and practice had started and when he walked in the room the equipment guy was gassing himself with the oxygen mask on.

This is Russia. It is something else. My friend played there for two years and I have heard the same stories. Even day before home game, the players stay in a hotel with security so they don't get drunk. All the vitamins and stuff, true stories. But there are few teams who play in KHL who are not in Russia, mainly the only western team Jokerit in Finland. It is a whole new world. Everything is legal and well operated like expected. Like all leagues is Western Europe are. Finnish Liiga, SHL in Sweden, Swiss League, German league... All operating as expected.
Jokerit was part of the Finnish Liiga until they joined the KHL a few years ago.

I played golf with Josh McGratton. At the time he was home from playing in Russia. If you look up tough in the dictionary, there would be a picture of him. What a great guy. He didn't tell any stories but you knew he was for real. I hope he is well. Even on the golf course I was ready to turtle. Lol.
I was on the staff of a team he played for. He was a great guy.
That team's name is "Vityaz" (Витязь) and back in the days, it was based in Checkhov, Moscow Region. I remember the time when Jeremy, Mirasty, Gratton were playing for Vityaz and that game with Avangard when almost the whole team got 5+20. P.S. I used to live in that town :-) Good times, the owner's name was Николай Павлинов (Nikolai Pavlinov), he's serving a time now for some kind of big-time money laundry scheme
remember that. Their strategy was basically beat up the other teams players to win the game:) Im kinda dissapointed the KHL stopped them from using that strategy anymore. was very entertaining.

The KHL began to clean itself up after Lockomotive's dilapidated plane crashed on takeoff and killed everyone on board, including a bunch of former NHL players, several of whom were former stars and Stanley Cup winners;
The plane was actually fine, it was only 40% through its service life. The investigation determined it was pilot error.
He`s talking about those Vityaz teams back in the day. They were shit but always had like 4 fighters that started shit at the end of games because they always lost.

Finnish player Petri Kontiola told a story about KHL when after the season Last practice, the owner of the team came into the rink and gave Cash money to all players. Top players got top dollars and so on. He said he gave him 500.000euros In 500euro bills. You cant bring this to Finland without problems so he hide the money Inside hockey sticks. Like said In this clip it is all mafia In Russia.
KHL has been wild, but a lot of the stories Paul is telling here are from wilder times in the early years of KHL. This day and age, the Mafia controlled teams that he is talking about here are no longer in the league. Mostly the teams are owned by massive industrial conglomerates now - it's not the same anymore.
@@AK-74K yes, I think I heard this story 10years ago. Mafia in Russia has penetrated the society from top to bottom, its not the same as In united states for example. If you want to bring your business to Russia you have to have permission from corrupted officials, Mafia In Russia is largerely In legitimate businesses.
@@vili1 Yes, but it's outward face has changed. The State has absorbed a lot of the criminal structures and the same wildness isn't there. I am certain there aren't club owners paying players in cash, or threatening umpires with murder anymore. It's a much more professional face now as the nature of the corruption in the country is different now.
@@AK-74K Nah you're wrong. They aren't as ruthless anymore as in the early days but a ton of shit goes on. I personally know this due to a family member who currently plays in the KHL for the last 10 years, and always hear new stories about shit.
@@lameloball2867 What club does he play for? I am very confident in what I am saying, I am Russian myself (living in the West now) and I am in touch with what is going on there still. Not saying the country isn't corrupt, but there Wild East era of the 90s and early 00s is done.

The teaching how to fight makes utter sense....fighting is part of the game you want to have at least preliminary knowledge on how to stay strong on your skates and hold on correctly so you don't get hurt in a potentially avoidable way. I garauntee that happens in some capacity here in the u.s. maybe not at that young of an age or not in an institutionalized fashion but an after or before practice "clinic" type deal.
I thought Euro Hockey had much less fighting. I dont remember seeing the Red Army team ever fighting. Heck Bobby Clark brought on of their players ankles with a slash, and they not even really retaliate.

@@atlas2583 lol no fair catches so there’s always a return on punts, less downs so more deep balls... passing game is much more important with the 3 downs... 20 second play clock so the game is faster paced
The CFL can be a bit more 'exciting' with 3 downs, unlimited WR motion, high scoring affairs. But it is not a superior game. The Rouge needs to go. The goal posts need to be backed up to the 21st century not kept in the 18th. The spin-the-wheel QB game every offseason. Well, the NFL has that this year, but it's a first.

I have a friend who is Russian from Russia and his entire family is super bad ass. The s sounds all very true. Russians are incredibly tough people. Very different culture I don't even know why they are but he is the toughest guy and his family I've ever met. Besides my dad who was a marine from Vietnam

Not in pro but college its rampant. Like I played football even at a small college I'd have meals at nice places paid for, "money handshakes", I can even remember a kid I had coached who was recruited by Oregon giving him $25k in Nike gear then his trip to Michigan where he committed got another $25k in jump man gear and this is a 18 year old getting this mind you, had some friends from Reynoldsburg, Ohio who knew a few top Michigan State running backs who got a couple thousand, yeah its not foreign but also not like mob run as you see here. Most of its just boosters like our big one was a massive paint company who did a lot of this when I played.

osu5inarow I’ve heard about this stuff and it made me wonder why there was a push to pay college players. Them getting an official form of payment that can be traced isn’t advantageous to them. They already get it under the table from boosters like you said and receive a huge marketing boost
Danbury Trashers of the UHL about 15 years ago was mob run. The league itself was mostly $300-400 a week salaries but the owner would give player's family members no-show jobs to get around the salary cap.

I was there (KHL) These stories are true. The fighting team was Vityaz Chehov. Mirasty, Yablonski, Brennan, Tarnasky. Coach was the idiot Andrei Nazarov-.No hockey, just fighting.

Bernd Bruckler wrote a great book about his experiences in KHL playing for (mainly) Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. His stories about sneaking out of the Baza were hilarious!
