Jaw dropping examples. Prior to the fish being lifted they are turned several times. Is this for correct lifting or to calm the koi or maybe disorientate them for a few seconds?

There are many predators in Japan, bears, snakes, racoon and birds. They net ponds etc

Yes just to calm them a bit, the temps would have been high so the koi very active
