    In 1974 I had the good fortune to travel East African Railways (EAR) from Nairobi to Mombasa for a family holiday. Overnight trip, bunk beds, eating in the dining car. What a memorable experience.
    My parents enjoyed a trip around Lake Victoria on MV Victoria. Many, many years ago.

    This route is no longer operational and Kenya has since become a little richer than Uganda

    The railway's highest station in the British Commonwealth is Timboroa just north of the Equator station at 9000 feet

    I am from Sri lank there are 14 M L W diesel electric locomotives in operation in Sri Lankan railway s probably like this

    It's a struggle but I fervently hope most if not all East and West African countries will soon get out of the "third world" epithet.
