Ralfy, these extras contain wisdom that’s highly regarded by all here at The Whisky Couch.
Cheers from South Africa 🥃
Thank you Ralfy. I started my collection after watching your reviews. Your reviews make me enjoy my whisky a lot. Cheers Ralfy.
Likewise! I used to enjoy my one and only bottle of Aberlour 10 till I met Ralfy at ralfy.com. Now I’m stuck with my 47 bottles of whiskies from around the world and a brandnew whiskybar in my living room 😳 Thanks Ralfy, cheers mate!
Same here guys, my whisky journey really started after watching several Ralfy reviews.
Ralfy! Congrats on 100k subscribers from a member of The Whisky Tribe and the Whiskey Vault! Thank you for all you do! Cheers!
Congratulations Ralfy! Looking forward to see what you will be opening when you hit 200k. Thank's for making my malt moments more pleasurable! Sincerely, Ossie
The Whisky Tribe loves you too! Awesome 100K!! Keep up the good work!
Whiskey vault brought me into the world of TH-cam whiskey shows and exploring whisk[e]y... That said, I'm super glad that there's a diversity of whisky shows out there such as yours Ralfy! I enjoy both the showmanship and casual nature of whiskey vault, as well as your more serious, in-depth focus on the whisky itself. What a great age we live in! Love seeing both channels meshing together! Cheers!
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
This extras is so true! A special whisky for this special moment of 100.000 subscribers is well earned I would say. Keep it up Ralfy!
Congratulations on your 100K, been watching your reviews and opinions for a while now. You have taught me an awful lot about whisky, and made my 'spiritual journey' so much more enjoyable and rewarding. Thanks Ralfy.
Thanks, Ralfy! My partner was curious as to where to start with whisky...and you just provided the answer in the first three minutes. Make no mistake, milad! You provide a valuable service for which we are grateful!
Thank you TH-cam for popping up the Whisky Vault and Modern Rogue colab videos on suggested videos. Usually it misses the mark for me. But that one nailed it. Thanks to that video I found out about Rex and Daniel and thanks to Daniel I found your channel. The only catch is my whisky budget and collection has gone up drastically. But thanks to consuming this content, I have far more confidence wandering around the whisky aisle in Total Wine and looking at more than just age statements and taking a shot in the dark. And congrats again on 100k and now 101k Ralfy!
Fidasaind haha wait for that confidence to tank. You get to the point of so much knowledge you are often left with indecision and unable to make up your mind. It happened to me for sure!
And I’ll say I’ve been watching Ralfy for years. I actually found the Whisky Vault(and through them the Modern Rogue channel) much later than I did him. All I can say is keep watching and let your Whisk(e)y knowledge grow.
My usual goal to avoid browsing (and overspending) is I have a list of a few I really want to try and save the links on the Total Wine website. They cannot ship to my home in Arizona. So when I want to re-stock I pick 1-3 bottles and place an online pickup order and just go pick up. No wandering the aisles and getting lost. And more importantly, no sense of ownership from touching bottles that I probably should not buy and get too much.
Whisky budget got slashed a bit this month. Took a spill on my bike and had some medical and repair bills. Thankfully my collection was well stocked with a good variety of scotches and an Angel's Envy Bourbon when I want something different.
Rex and Daniel send me over, I'm glad they did! Gratz on 100k man
Always good to be reminded about the importance of remaining cautious about the subliminal effects of marketing on smell and taste!
Would love to see a Ralfy / Whisk(e)y Vault crossover video!
Congratulations Ralfy, and thank you as always for your opinion and knowledge; hope you enjoy that Brora; and here's to many more malt moments!
Thank you Ralfy!
Amazing tasting with alot of quality! I think the step to reopen Port Ellen, Brora & Rosebank (yes i know, its not Diageo anymore) is a amazing step to bring back history!!! Its very brave! I love it! And cheers to ralfy, im a new follower and love it!
I love watching both of your channels! Congrats Ralfy, and thank you!!!
good shout out Ralfy! and congrats on your milestone!
Fantastic chat as always , had me chuckling away there ralfy
I love this "extra's" part of the reviews. Good addition!
Ralfy, I discovered you from your Brother, and am also a part of the Whisky Tribe, you are awesome!
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
Hey Ralfy congrats on 100k subs!
Speaking of the Whisk(e)y Tribe, if you ever need a mooch, I'm available!
You bought that bottle of Brora on my 42nd birthday...
Rex and Daniel are a hoot!!
I first bought a bottle for £35 in oddbins Altrincham in 1994, the 22yr 72 old rare malts bottle. Instantly set a benchmark, it was stellar for most the years it took to drink. Smoke, seaside, spice all blended together. Had a later 40% independent bottling - good but not the same.
Looking for the next affordable gem…. Though I think those days are long gone
. . . 94' . . . those days have gone 😊
Congratulations Ralfy! Best regards from Toronto. Malty Maple Leafs!🍁👍👍
Hi Ralfy! How many bottles do you have open at a time?
I will take answer B for what Diageo's plan is for the two distillery
Hi
What would be the ralfy score 4 talisker 18(present edition)is it as good as 93 you gave earlier?
Isnt it chillfilteted n artificially coloured?
So true what you're telling about the way we are more enclined to think something's good when it's more expensive or more favorably known and marketed. When you taste Karuizawa or Port Ellen, you force yourself to like it anyway, because of the myths surrounding it (of course, many of them are good, but not always so great)... Same applies to wine and other spirits. Blind tasting is a very humbling experience in this regard.
great info! hey, if you're re-reviewing glendfiddich ... any chance you could hit that 15yo solera as well? I've noticed the packaging is quite different in the last 4 years or so. i would be interested in a re-review on this one! thanks dude :)
Congrats Ralfy
What other whiskies would you recommend to wet your pallet ?
cheers from the whiskey vault.
Brora 30 is in a price range, that I will not even consider buying, no matter how good it is. Interesting to get your opinion though. My cupboad is full of quality liquer, but my personal trinity is Laphroaig, Old Pulteney and Wild Turkey. After years of appreciating whisk(e)y, calvados, cognac and lots of different single malts, the rest is just extras, rum and tequila incl.
Maybe it is just me, and I am more like a newbie in the realm of whisk(e)y, but......as I have started to hear more and more about independent bottlers, the question have arisen. Can a whisk(e)y be really called Brora, or Glengoyne, or Springbank or Balblair...or anything, if the provenance of the maturation is actually different. Of course the distillate is originated from that specific distillery, but, it is not just about that (in my opinion). In my interpretation, If you buy a bunch of casks and place it to a different location or anywhere but not the distillery's warehouse, that whisk(e)y is no longer that specific one. I am happy to hear the different opinions on this one!!!
Cheers 🥃 from the Whiskey Tribe 🥃
Congrats to the malt captain! You are the man Ralfy.
PS does someone know how I can write something personally to Ralfy? Thanks
Cheers Malt mate
A great video as always Ralfy 🤓🥃
Ralfy, thanks so much for your videos! I have watched most if not all of them and have never posted until now and I have a specific question for you. Are you concerned by the orangy color of your Brora bottle and the high ABV for such an old bottling? Keep it up! I’m learning a lot and having fun “learning” about whisky. 😁
. . . not overly concerned, but mindful !
Congrats on getting over 100k in subscribers
Ralfy, pithy as always :) Would you say that Glenfiddich 12 is better in this role of "wetting the whistle" than some other basic malts like Glenlivet 12, Speyburn 10 or say Tomintoul 10? Or even a decent basic unpeated blend (Ballantine's, Chivas, McIvor - these are the ones IIRC don't have much peat about them). Or how about a basic blended Irish whiskey? Just curious if it's just about the plainness of it or if it's important to have that tartness/dryness of 'fiddich? Thank you.
. . . any non-peaty malt is good for W.T.W. !
Absolutely agree about reviewers trying to direct from a marketing department. It's one thing I really believe Laphroaig is doing well. "Opinions welcome" (#opinionswelcome) is a great slogan and not cutting out the people giving their honest tastes even if not flattering to their product. It is genius in my opinion.
. . . it's one of the better marketing campaigns recently.
Benjamin Ross On their packaging they have some descriptions given by said customers. One of the best I have seen was “Tastes like kissing a mermaid that has just eaten BBQ!” LOL!!
Late congrats on the 100K hope you take less time to get to 200K the more people encouraged try more whiskeys etc the better... and maybe we will get a bit better a selection over here on the other side of the planet.
Lovely.
Any similarity in taste between Brora and Clynelish?
. . at times, yes !
Interesting - I'd love to compare.
Excellent video ralfy
wonderful reviews congrats on your subscribers Ralfy
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
Wish clynelish would release more.....
Hi there Ralfe, i have a question, again ;) it's been a year since i've got into whisky, i don't drink more than three glasses in a week, and i want to keep it that way in life. Can you give me some tips about keeping your drinking in control, and not becoming an alcoholic ? PS : What are your views on The Famous Grouse (the original one ?)
. . . simple, keep a dram diary, date, time measure, brand, opinion. It logs your consumption.
The first single malt whisky I enjoyed was Glenfiddich 15 yo.
Oh yeah... Very wise words about power of the label, hype, subjectivity and expectations before you open that great looking bottle of spirit. I've been doing some blind test tasting and comparing cheap and expensive bourbon and oh boy what a results when you don't have any idea what's in the glass! To long to elaborate here but three words will do- just do it. 😉
Cheers Ralfy,
Ralfy! Which whiskey nowadays has the same style and taste of the whiskeys in the 1950's ? i don't mind if its blended or single malt as long as this whiskey has the spirit of the good old days! :)
hahaha when ralfy tries to say smörgåsbord :D
I couldn't but think that if respect for the haggis requires it to be piped in, then surely a bottle of 30-year-old Brora deserves the same. It seems regrettable that collectors and speculators have bid a £150 bottle of whisky up to £1500+ but looking at the upside, at least it resulted in Diageo seeing it as worthwhile to re-open the distillery. As for the marketing, it seems that in these days when the few have most of the money, the marketing guys have to invent products for them to demonstrate their conspicuous consumption with.
no rewiew this week?
what's wrong?
malt-literati, great term!
Remarkable non-linear time juggling
Plz chose the best 2 out of these for an experienced malt drinker..
1.talisker 18
2.aberlour 18
3.old pultney 17
4.springbank 15
5.glenlivet 10 signatory unchillfiltered
4.redbreast 12 cask strength
5.dunvilles 10 px
3 and 4 would be my choices.
Millburn (spey side) Blended Scotch
i think it´s really sad how expensive these bottels have become. this way so many maltheads won´t be able to ever taste a drop of these gems (me included)...
I did not know I am an "anorak"... Is this potentially a problem???? Cheers.
. . . never a problem, only a blessing !
#WhiskeyTribe...shall we coin #RalphyClan?
Someone educate me: what popular, readily-available Diageo expressions are unchillfiltered and naturally colored?
I think Knockando ist naturally colored, but it ist chillfiltered. But I am not 100% sure about it (color-wise).
I wonder what your opinion would be if someone covered the label and told you nothing until after you did a review.
Make your opinion matter. Have someone do the research - keep it secret until after your review.
Like you said, in this vlog, try it mate.
Hoping the future Brora and Port Ellen releases will be quality spirits with craft presentations, but fully expecting them to be NAS marketing dreck. The bottles will sell themselves without being a quality spirit, so why bother spending money to make them good? Most bottles probably won't be drunk anyway, but instead be immediately stored away as investments.
Reminds me of the travesty of Black Maple Hill. Used to be such a lovely whiskey 10 or so years ago. Then production stopped, ownership changed hands, and now it's just rubbish, trading only on its name.
You know Ralfy, you are subject to cognitive biases when you taste whiskies, for instance when you criticize E150 or chill filtration. If you tasted the same whisky without those you would probably not notice a difference. So you have to be more careful still, although I do recognize you are making efforts, just not enough.
