    The new format of reviews is working for me. Thanks again Ralfy for finding a whisky I probably would have never found.

    I am a big fan of Wolfburn. I tried it at a tasting and was blown away on the quality for such a young expression. The Aurora version needs more time, but the core expression is very nice. Little pricey for a 3 year old scotch, but the quality and taste is there IMHO.

    Strange earlier tonight I thought about an independent bottling of a 1991 Glentauchers I bought by chance in 2014 in my local off licence to celebrate a new job. I knew nothing about it but loved it though haven't seen it since. Happy times.

    Congratulations Ralfy on smashing through 100K subscribers. What a love-in we had for you at Roy’s channel. I couldn’t get on so I’ll have to do my own homage. I really love touring distilleries through your eyes - with all the new operations coming to maturity and hitting markets soon I would love to see some new distillery tours. All the best, dear sir.

    Oh yes, Wolfburn! Have a bottle of the Northland and it's a stunning whisky, especially considering it's still so young!

    Wolfburn is very very promising. The early bottelings were obviously very young, but the promise of a great future was there, and is becoming more apparent with every new release.

    Ralfy, I know you're familiar with The Creative Whisky Co., Exclusive Malts. I've been meaning to recommend that you try their 8 year old Glentauchers, cask strength, dated 2008. Mahogany in color (natural color) from first fill ex-sherry butts, you'd think from the color that this would be cask dominated, but no, the spirit comes through. Immense, and long with numerous varnish notes (in a good way), you haven't reviewed a scotch with this profile in a long time. What's remarkable is that it's only 8 year's of age, but presents as much older. It's really an event.

    Hi Ralfy, thanks for another interesting extra. I have tried over the years not to buy the same Whisky more than once or twice and to keep going for different distilleries or expressions. I love single cask bottlings at cask strength. And there it is exactly as you said. The indipendent bottlers do offer on many occasions gems that you do not often come by when buying the standard stuff. Recently I bought at a Whisky fair (Whisky Schiff, Zurich) a blended malt under the name of Auchindoun out of the Octave series by Duncan Taylor. I suspected that this was a fantasy name for a Kininvie with a bit of Balvenie in it so that the IB cannot play around with the name Kininvie. The importer confirmed my suspicion and I was able to buy one bottle, which was relatively cheap for Switzerland @ 75.- CHF, which today is about £ 56.00. For me the Whisky has a very good price/taste ratio. Here some further info on it: 9y, bottled 2017, alc. 53.6 % vol. matured in an oak octave cask. This is an example of what I keep looking for good price/performance ratio on non-standard, un chill-filtered and no colour added bottlings. For people who like to experience different expressions a membership to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society might be a good idea, too. The prices have come down recently and so has the age of the Whiskies. But they do try to make them affordable and do their own wood management now, too. And then there is another advantage, you can always taste a single dram at the society or an affiliated bar. That way you know what you buy. I wrote this since you incouraged us to write about Whisky. I hope I was able to give some input for the not so experienced followers of your vlog. Please keep up the great work.

    You have inspired me Ralfy with this episode down here in Texas! I have tracked down now a bottle from the Battlehill line of Duncan Taylor with Glentauchers 11 bottled at 53% and un-chill filtered. Have you heard anything good or bad on this line? Based on your review 709 here, I’m highly optimistic, especially at 53%! Thanks as always for your outstanding hobby! Erik

    Here's some non-Scotch:
    Anything by the English Whisky Co from Norfolk
    Try Cotswold - only 3 years old (not that it carries an age statement) but very good - totally unlike Scotch. It has an almost Mediterranean or brandy feel to it. I think it reminds me of Metaxa.
    And then there's Millstone 100 Dutch Rye - you HAVE to review that.

    • @LarsDragonbeard
      @LarsDragonbeard 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It obviously depends on the bottling, but Tomatin is one of my favourite distilleries. Especially single (refill) bourbon casks have a very nice profile full of mellow vanilla.

    Of course, Ralfy IS right by saying that some of the stuff that was around 10 to 20 years ago was really shite, at least that bit did not change all that much.
    And of course, he IS right by saying that we all have to go with the flow and that there's still lots of truly good stuff around and some really promising stuff to be around in a couple of years.
    BUT, the overall majority of bottlings especially in the age bracket of 10 to 20, wether it be indies or the origninal bottlings, has decreased in quality quite a bit.
    AND THAT is due to two reasons:
    1. Nobody drinks sherry anymore.
    Sherry casks are now "created" to actually be legally able to be called sherry casks, through so called "seasoning". Sherry Casks that have actually matured sherry for several years are as scarce as a four leaf clover nowadays, and incredibly expensive, hence distillers took these out of the equation for their core bottlings, 20 years ago there was still plenty of these casks to be found.
    2. Demand has risen dramatically within the last 15 years.
    Different types of barley strains with ever increasing yields in order to produce more wash thus more spirit (rushed distilation comes to mind), internal steamcoil heated stills in stead of directly heated ones, rejuvenated casks replacing the traditional first fill bourbon barrel,
    the list goes on.

    Ahoy Ralfy. Any chance of procuring and reviewing a blended malt, maybe famous grouse 1989 vintage malt? Just got a bottle and wondering what a FG blended malt would be like considering it contains highland park, macallan and bunnahabhain so could be interesting and will let me know if its worth saving for a special occasion?

  • @garrettjanssen7683
    @garrettjanssen7683 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just my theory but the "Old whiskies were better because they had better casks" applies more for ex-sherry matured single malt scotch than ex-bourbon matured. Because people hardly drink sherry now, at least in America so there's less demand, less casks being bought by sherry producers, and less attention to the preparation of those casks.
    As for lesser known malt moments, I'll add Ballindalloch to the list. When they are ready for their first release I'm sure it'll be a cracking good malt.

    • @tizianobabbi3218
      @tizianobabbi3218 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not agree, I have had many Whiskies from the 60s, 70s and 80s and they were not better. Different, definetely, better, not really. They were made to the palate of then and the stuff sold in those days was rather new for the single malt market. The finishings are much more varied these days and wood management in general is also better or more elaborate, respectively

    • @garrettjanssen7683
      @garrettjanssen7683 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      xiaguan whisky Wouldn't that prove my point? Because a majority of sherry casks are just being seasoned rather than actually maturing sherry for long periods, the sherry doesn't have time to truly interact with the wood (European or American oak). One could imagine the "sherry-ness" of the cask being lower for the sherry-seasoned cask as opposed to the sherry-aged cask. And the tannins would be more for the sherry seasoned cask most likely.

      Initially I agreed, however I actually quite appreciate the change. Now you've a means to search for an after-the-review topic of discussion. Before I used to sometimes want to listen to Ralfy discussing something specific again but couldn't for the life of me recall which review it was tagged on after.

      TH-cam algorithm favors creators that post ten+ minute videos on a regular basis, they want daily videos if possible.
      The way he has split the vids up should help him get recommended more and should help with getting more ad revenue as he's more active, which means more whiskey for us to learn about.
      I think us watching videos within an hour of being posted goes in his favor too.

    Ralfy, I just got back from the Victoria Whisky Festival. One of the presenters was talking about a technique recently developed by the Bourbon industry to squeeze out whisky absorbed into the wood during maturation. This has quickly become widespread and it may harm the barrels and impair the maturation of scotch later. Have you heard of this? Could it be the next big challenge in the industry? Apparently Compass Box are deliberately sourcing casks form distilleries that do not do this process.
