How To Replace a 2000-2007 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable 3.0 Starter

  • Starter bad? This video applies to all Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable 3.0 V6 engines from 2000 to 2007. (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007)
    I hope this video can help some of you fix your car yourself, save you money, and build your confidence and DIY skills. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!
    Note: Take a pic or a note of your vin number when you buy the starter - 8th digit of the vin is a "U" on this car I'm fixing - the parts store cared about this detail when getting me a starter from the shelf. This shouldn't affect your install though, just make sure to get the right part!

    Dude. I don't know a thing about cars. Then my starter in my 02 sable decided it was done living yesterday morning. I found your video last night and thanks to your video I was able to remove my old starter and install the new one with no issues. You showed me everything I needed to know, there were no surprises, there was never a point where I didn't feel like I knew what I was doing. Excellent video. Very very helpful 10/10.

    Replacing the starter today on a 2002 Sable. Plan on using a degreaser first to clean off the oil and dirt from the past years. Most starter replacements have the wire that is to be crimped onto the existing wire, but I didn't see that in your video. It also has a warning NOT to remove the new attached wire.

    • @RiggsGarage
      @RiggsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the original wire, it was in perfect condition. My advise would be to have a look at yours and make the decision based on condition of the wiring. Thanks for watching!

      Unfortunately, the NEW starter I ordered on-line was NOT the correct starter for the 2002 Sable. I had to go to a local parts store which did have the part - and it was about $60 more. Then I found out that the car would not start because the battery that I had charged before replacing the starter did not have enough juice the next morning. The new battery cost as much as the starter.

    Yes I just put a starter in 2001 Ford Taurus SEL and I know the way you took it out but the easiest way to take it out and put it back in believe it or not move the starter to the other side where your oil filter is , takes off your oil filter the starter just slides right out and you put it in the same way it slides right up sweet .

    I bought a used 01 Mercury Sable LS. The starter needed replacing recently so we take the old one off to discover washers shimming the starter away from the flywheel. Replicating this setup gives a sound like change in a dryer when starting the car and turning left. Tried replacing the starter, shimming in alternative ways, inspecting to see if theres any loose metal in the flywheel but nothing helped. Anyone else experience this?

You can make high payments on a potentially more reliable car, keep that one alive and save, etc. I usually buy 20-year-old stuff for dirt cheap that is in pretty good shape and go through and put brakes and tires on them and drive them a long time. Any suggestion as to preventing oil from ruining the starter? Since the oil intrusion probably happens at oil-change time, what could be done to prevent the damage before it happens? I just had a starter replaced on my '03 Taurus $600+ dollars including tow. BTW, I think Ford should be forced to provide free starter replacements when dripping oil is the obvious cause of failure. What shoddy engineering!!!!!

    • @RiggsGarage
      @RiggsGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RiggsGarage I think draining the old oil first would relieve any existing pressure in the system (removing the top oil-fill cap first). The key is to prevent gushing when oil filter is removed. Damn stupid engineering. I wonder if any recalls were issued for this fk-up...

    • @RiggsGarage
      @RiggsGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never owned one of these cars, but since the filter is horizontal, definitely tried draining the oil first, maybe that will make sure that filter isn't loaded up with oil as much. If they did a recall I'm sure it's long gone
