Why We Get Greenwashing Instead of Better Products? The Right to Repair and Rationalism

  • Back in 2022 Formula 1 announced that starting with 2026 all race cars will only use fully sustainable fuels in other words no new fossil carbon will be burned, instead “the carbon will come from non-food biological sources, genuine municipal waste or even extracted directly from the atmosphere”
In 2023 the calendar of Formula 1 included approximately 150.000 of kilometers of land and air travel in an order that in no way prioritized the reduction of land and air travel. And pretty much all of it is on non-sustainable jet fuel and diesel. If we add all the math the race cars account for 1.9% of the distance traveled by vehicles within the 2023 Formula 1 season, and this does not include the cars and other vehicles of all the visitors flocking to the events.
BMW likes to boast how their cars use up to 20% recycled plastics and how they recycle metal shavings during the manufacturing process. Here’s what they also thought was a good idea. A monthly subscription for heated seats. Basically all the metal hardware, the heating elements and all the wiring, buttons, switches, fuses, relays and software is installed into every car. However to use it, you must pay a subscription. If you don’t pay a subscription, no heated seats for you. Many people live in warm climates. Many may choose not to pay the subscription. This means that many cars will receive a piece of equipment that will never be used. The manufacturing of this equipment of course has an environmental impact. The recycling of this equipment also has an environmental impact. And it’s added weight negatively impacts the fuel efficiency of the vehicle.
KTM motorcycles had a similar idea. They call it “DEMO mode”. They install a very wide array of electronic rider aids and optional features. All of these require their own wiring, chips, sensors and more. But after 1500km they all get deactivated and you can keep using only the ones you pay for. Again we have the production and future recycling of things that will never be used unless the manufacturer receives a profit.
Something else that's an increasing practice among car, truck and even farm equipment manufacturers is to make parts impossible to repair or to fuse multiple parts into one. Parts integral to the operation of the vehicle are purposely welded, sealed, soldered or otherwise made in such a way that they cannot be repaired. We also have Intercoolers fused into intake manifolds and other multi-component assemblies where the failure of one part requires the replacement of the entire assemby resulting in fully functioning components ending up in the trash. The barrier against third party maintenance and repair is further strengthened by using proprietary or prohibitively expensive special tools and software walls that require part registration to restore vehicle functionality.
But car manufacturers aren’t alone in this, tech giants like Apple as well as many other manufacturers of consumer electronics are also experts at greenwashing. Apple for example boasts how their new apple watch is their first carbon neutral product. The wristband has 30% recycled material in it. But they together with many other corporations from multiple different sectors have spent millions on making their products difficult or impossible to repair through methods I already mentioned. They have then spent further millions to lobby against the “right to repair” legislation in order to keep their devices unrepairable and force consumers to buy new ones because the repair of said devices is often made purposely as expensive as a new device. And as we know, making new devices and recycling old ones both have an environmental impact. And the millions spent on making devices unrepairable and the millions spent on lobbying could have easily been spent on making devices more easy to repair and empowering consumers to repair them themselves. This would have been a truly measurable positive impact for the environment but it would also negatively impact future profits of the company, meaning that it would essentially be an act of charity and Apple, BMW, KTM, Formula 1 and all of the other corporations and businesses you can think off, none of them are charities.
So the problem with our world is that it is profit based and ruled by giant corporations who have so much money and power that they can bend governments and legislation to their will. Following this line of thinking we reach a conclusion that the solution is to dismantle capitalism and embrace communism while setting environmental well-being as the number 1 priority. A world of harmony and happiness shall then ensue?

This is definitely not your typical d4a video but I think these are important and relevant issues that impact all of us. So I felt a strong urge to speak about the subject openly, in a logical, unbiased and rational manner. This is not a signal of any change of direction for this channel, but as a creator I will not abandon my freedom to dip into other topics because of the possibility of upsetting people that expect exclusively a certain type of content and may choose to unsubscribe if they see something unexpected. This channel is not a media machine with editors, researchers, interns, cameramen etc. This is genuinely a one-man show that is fueled by passion and curiosity. I am the researcher, the script writer, the presenter, the camera-man, the editor. Yes, it's a lot more work but it also means that I only have to finance myself and not an entire team. The bonus I get is greater creative freedom and a lack of constraint to always produce exclusively view-maximizing and sponsored content. I know that many of you understand and appreciate this, and for that I am very grateful.

      " *philosophy* "
The philosophy presented here is a post-modern nonsense, in which no scientist worth his salt believes. Scientists do believe in objective truth. The whole concept of *discovery* in science implies the existence of objective truth. Sure, it may be hard to discover, and we will never know all of it, but we surely can know *some of it* !
That's what the actual scientists believe. What he says here is a pseudo-intellectual post-modern babble, which likely appeared, because the *philosophers* couldn't figure anything out. Science figured out a lot of stuff, hence this post-modern view never took hold.

@@ctdieselnut He does outright tell you what science is and how a scientist think.
      He's unfortunately wrong on that.
Scientists do not believe that the truth changes. (What would they try to discover then?)
Specifically, they do not believe that "what is the truth at this time may change in the future".
You may say that it's a semantic distinction, but it really is not, since there are people who do believe that "the truth" is what we believe is true. Even if we are wrong, They don't care.
With that said, I do understand what you are coming from. No, he does not blindly buy into the most obvious propaganda. It takes a much more sophisticated propaganda to blind him.

It's a shame we are told everyday that we need to start driving electric vehicles when they make up a small percentage of pollution and the natural resources to replace every combustion engine on this planet with batteries does not exist on this planet. Also the manufacturing process of these batteries is way more toxic for the environment. Plus the power that is required to recharge these cars is made by coal burning power plants and the power generating capacity needed to replace all current cars and trucks is mind boggling, it will take many years and many nuclear plants to be able to generate the power needed for this global endevour.
And yet we are being told by 2035 combustion engines will be obsolete and some countries in the world will ban them? How is this even possible?
But hey dont think too much about it, just be a good consumer and give us all your money... and then give us some more because we will make some features in your car subscription based to "save the environment".

I first experienced these "optional features" about 20 years ago. As an electrical engineer I authorized the purchase of a HP vector signal analyzer. This was an expensive piece of equipment at about $25,000. It had a number of options built into it that could only be activated by purchasing a software key for each option. I really hated this idea and I still do.

    • @charleslowe522
      @charleslowe522 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

When I seen "HP vector" that reminded me of what I seem to face everyday. I work in automotive as an embedded software "engineer". I don't consider configuring a microcontroller low-level drivers, communication stack, etc. as necessarily being an engineer. Most companies sell their hardware and then a license fee has to be paid to use the associated software application to utilize it. Those companies that provide hardware and software that allow you debugger software, they are pretty reasonable due to the competition. The is one company though that has close to a monopoly on the tools for looking at communication buses in a vehicle and various portions of the embedded software components like the bootloader, communication stack and to meet AutoSAR requirements. They charge some an excessive amount of money for their products. A bootloader and AutoSAR package cost over a million. Their tools for viewing or simulating an ECU with a CAN bus, cost over $10k. However, the other day I went to an information session and their is another company whose product I have worked with in the past that's offer this same CAN tool for around $700. Good to have competition.

Well if you look at the F1 events and rather than only calculate the official event fuel usage, you incorporate the visitors' fuel use, you are talking 0.001% effect of reduction of "unsustainable" carbon use by 2026 F1. Rather than argue over the final stat, it would be more useful to explore human emotions and behavior. The arguments and predictions over global warming between 1.5C and 1.8c by 2050 ignore the billions of gallons of carbon becoming trillions of kilotons of CO2 which will further alter the Earth's thermal processes. very interesting. i share all that you said, and i want to add something. In europe we are being forced to the idea that the emissions problems come from cars, therefore forcing consumers to buy newer euro 5-6-7 cars that comply to emissions rules, but, with a little research you can discover that ONLY the cruise industry, specifically Costa Crociere, emit around as much CO2 and greenhouse gases as ALL the cars and trucks and motorcycles in europe, since they run on massive diesel engines. And Costa only owns around 6 boats. There are around 10 other boats from other companies all emitting a LOT, and nobody ever says nothing about them. Also, we are not even accounting for the enormous amount of wasted food, since all the restaurants are all you can eat... i could even go on talking about how in reality we are not the problem and the biggest amount comes from developing countries and how we should help their economies to achieve a faster developing society, but this would turn into an article :) nice vid, we should share it as much as possible.

The point is not that we need bigger government to combat corporations (they work hand in glove, revolving door politics, regulatory capture...etc), the point is that we empower the aggregate of consumers with information they can use to make rationally directed consumer choices, which is the ultimate regulatory mechanism that corporations respond to. Consumer demand is a more effective, uncorrupted and efficient way to regulate corporate outputs. Governments have proven to enable corporate greed by leveraging lobbying power to sway tax laws in their favor. No amount of governance "by the people" can compete with corporate lobby money. The key is to stem the flow of money by not consuming products that don't give you exactly what you want (reliability, efficiency, freedom of use, ownership, reparability).

As someone with bias toward my own products:
AEM does this same thing, especially with their electronics. Their products are closed source, with no repairability in mind. If you use a Series2 and it breaks, they no longer care about fixing them, don't tell you how to fix it, their firmware is closed, and their answer is "buy an Infinity", more of their products where you don't know anything about how the ECU does its math, and if there is a hardware fault, you're equally obstructed in the repair department. Their AEM X Series gauges, very good gauges when they work, are known to arrive DOA. If you contact them about this, they tell you to destroy it and take picture evidence and they send you a new one, instead of telling you how to fix it, why it broke or is DOA, etc...
There are open source choices that provide schematics, provide the source code for all of these kinds of products, work great, but a lot of people turn a completely blind eye and push the products of the corporations that have the budget to pay them off....
Is that the fault of capitalism?

this video is really good, puts a lot of feelings I and (surprisingly very few of) my friends who are engineers have been feeling about the world as of recently, the only issue is the only time where it seems like actually looking at reality is encouraged at all is in academia. society's general anti-intellectualism mixed with bad actors pushing for that to remain the norm are ultimately the biggest threats to humanity at the moment to be honest i find it genuinely shocking how 9 times out of 10 asking something as basic as "what's the source on that?" can't even be answered in serious discussions about these topics, and then another 9 times out of 10 that source will be something someone found to agree with their point, NOT the general scientific consensus on any issue
one thing to mention is that as much as most of these shitty practices come from the executives in these companies, ultimately someone has to design and implement these things and so many fellow engineers do not care, and would gladly fuck over their consumers for the bigger salaries these companies give out, even beyond the automotive industry. i was talking to an engineer I knew at BMW (who drives a Toyota, lmfao) and the general sentiment is either "I can't do anything about it because I'm the minority" or "I don't care, I get paid either way". very frustrating

a few tidbits. dont have too much time right now.....
There's no scientific consensus, there's mainstream and forks, which is good on one way and bad in another
      lies, damn lies and statistics.....
on the consensus part again- there were about 12(out of ~20) papers published which were inane on the onset, the test was to see if they Would get published.
60% did, one of them was a copy from "mein kampf" with a word change.
about 60-80% of the soft science studies/research etc is purportedly unduplicable.
the Hard sciences also have that but in a lower amount, again purportedly.
there's a lot of mud to sift through and we must get smarter.
bjorn lomborg has similar notions, its education that we must put an emphasis on, more and better technology will, if not save, then help us do better in general.
the current environmental "pledges" of nations are a mess of things and there no real ONE goal so that it gets done, instead everyone is twiddling their thumbs in their own corner making jack s....
especially on the environmental part, which i have similar problems with as are told in the video.
i get that people want to help but being lazy isn't really the answer´, charity also has such a similar problem, peoples good will gets exploited with their laziness.
a charity may use up more than half of the donations for itself, and that's probably a low estimate with some of the bigger ones.
just making evs aint gonna help if you need to put more energy and resources, or in other words pollution, into building them, the support structures and anything else they need.
And to top it off then use them somewhere so that they emit even more than a regular car in their lifetime, making the environmental part of the argument pointless and cynically funny.
in an australian grid an ev will produce about 80-120grams of CO2 per km, compared to my diesel that produces about 180 grams per kilometer, my car is about 15 years old, an ev has about 8 tons of CO2 battery "loan" to pay back for making it and it gets renewed every 2-10 years, heavily depending on how you drive and for how much, adding that 8 tons of CO2 again, with current technology, which may be for a while.
(im not buying into "the future" arguments, there are very solid reasons why most technology is not scalable etc so that it may spread to the vast majority of us.)
Especially if were building them in china, which reminds me:
if were just exporting the pollution away to another place, then were still producing more pollution + the transport, there is only ONE planet.
and still made a long reply, sorry for the rather hodge podge thoughts, ask for clarification on any of em.

The guy in video says the knowledge across internet should be like scientist do it but than complains about internet becoming a war zone. DaFak? That is EXACTLY how scientist Battle it out too. Read the history about scientists and not some fairy story about the scientific community. They have no conscious and now they are perfectly fine to claim there is no gender nor is an unborn baby alive.
The hell will I go along “scientific knowledge” when they telling me different than my own eyes can see. That’s for you idiotic sheep ripe for slaughter.

I'm sure some of the engineers truly try or have before and after a few times of having no success then probably feel they are too small or won't make a change
I've seen it and it's the truth

I didn't think it'd go so much into philosophical stuff, but it was interesting nonetheless. You went from simple examples of the automotive industry into concepts that define our life on Earth, then back again to those examples. It was a wild ride, but a welcome one.

Just an amazing video, concerning an issue that is now really important to discuss and make people aware. No one seems to question greenwashing. I really hope we will be able to make people realize this.
The first thing I have always learned will help the environment is to reduce. Buy second hand for starters, overall the impact of an older vehicle will be much less that buying an electric car - the cost to the owner too...
Consumism is greatly related not only to the extreme side of capitalism but, to the ego and showoff mentality our society now lives upon, people will have to realize this first, which might take a while...

I was fed your thumbnail (as a subscriber) on several occasions the past few days and it's such a departure from your usual style that I mistook it as ad spam. I didn't realize it was yours until I went to your channel and looked for videos you had uploaded. You present some outstandingly compelling arguments and your presentation delivery is superb! It seems unscripted and off the cuff, yet so polished, especially since English is not your native language. I'm so glad the right of repair movement has spread beyond Louis Rossman's battle with Apple (even his channel touches on John Deere and Taylor ice cream machines at McDonalds recently. I hope the corporate mentality will cease to shake down consumers so aggressively in the name of profits and shareholder value. I certainly have had enough of the greed and inflation in my local market from groceries to cumputers. Thank you!

I've been thinking about this exact topic recently. I think one of the other large issues is when governments and lawmakers fail to acknowledge, or deliberately ignore, the motivations, goals, and imbalance in power/money of large corporations as opposed to smaller businesses and individuals. What really made it salient in my mind was when I was reminded of and looked up the 25 year effective ban on small scale car imports in the US, which is ostensibly for consumer protection, but is quite plainly meant to protect the interests of large auto manufacturers who want to pick and choose which of their products are available in what market and for what price.
I'm glad more people are talking about these issues.

KTM is privately owned, by Stefan Pierer (or Pierer Mobility Group), who also own Husqvarna, Gas Gas and MV Agusta. Nothing to do with BMW. Not even German, very much Austrian, which is subtlety but definitely different.

@@breganzane Ah, yes. The connection I made was incorrect. The actual connection is that BMW sold Husqvarna to PMG which owns KTM. Anyway, it would seem KTM have learnt from BMW when it comes from accessing options. Greedy bastards the lot of them. Hope it's their undoing.

I just want to import a Toyota or Hyundai with a simple port injected naturally aspirated engine from Russia or some other Asian country outside the EU. So dead simple to work on, so smooth because there's no turbo shoving you forward and it will last longer than any of the super downsized DI turbo engines sold here. Just like how a traditional automatic will last longer than a DCT. An NA port injected engine is basically impossible to buy in the EU.

Reflecting on human nature, human devices and socio-economy which drive our whole race is as important as recognizing how we function similarly on micro and macro plan. Bravo!

Our "center left" state level gov't removed incentives for: DIY minisplit heat pump installs. Ebike conversion kit installs. Rebates for converting to heat pump only available if HVAC mafia installed. Ebike rebate only available for new sales of purpose built ebikes. Not for used Ebike sales and not for (much greener) ebike kit bike conversion installs. SMH.

This was outside the usual but an excellently put together video. Would you ever consider doing a video on track tire wear? I’d love to know more about different types of wear, cold tears, blistering, graining etc. ideally with motorcycle tires. I’ve heard people talk about this but it seems always in context to suspension set up and never the mechanics of why the tire does this.
