  • Join me in the kitchen as I share my go-to recipe for homemade brown sugar - a kitchen essential, especially during the holiday season! I started making my own due to the challenge of finding organic brown sugar in my area. With just two ingredients - white cane sugar and molasses - you can create both light and dark brown sugar to suit any recipe. I buy these in bulk, ensuring I never run out. Watch as I walk you through the simple process and stay tuned for a chat about my journey towards a minimalist wardrobe. Plus, we'll be prepping some spice cake mixes for the upcoming holidays. Subscribe for more kitchen adventures and helpful tips! Thanks for watching!
    👉Light Brown Sugar:
    1 cup white granulated sugar
    1 tablespoon molasses
    👉Dark Brown Sugar:
    1 cup white granulated sugar
    2 tablespoons molasses

I make my own brown sugar as well. It’s great! Sometimes I don’t even mix the molasses in first, I just add a spoonful of molasses in with the wet ingredients.

You amaze me, Rachel! When you started mixing with your spatula my jaw dropped. I am so lucky to have a blender and a food processor! I know I’ve seen you use your little tiny food processor 😂 I’m not sure if that would work for this? I always mix up my brown sugar in the blender and if I need a dark I usually do it in the food processor. I also make my own powdered sugar in the blender as well - just blending up sugar! Another one I just recently learned about is baking powder! I couldn’t get any in the spring so I looked up how to make it and it’s just baking soda and cream of tartar!! 1 part baking soda and 2 parts cream of tartar. My recipe suggested adding cornstarch to stop clumping but I find it doesn’t help that much mine still clumps after a few weeks. Great video!

I've been watching the Minimal Mom for a while now (idk if that's ok to say??), and I daydream about being minimalist. Lol
We have 5 kids 9-17 that we homeschool and we homestead. The struggle is real!
I have taken her suggestion and I go through the house in layers. It feels SO good to drop off donation bags!
We still have way too much, but I'm giving myself (and my family grace) and am enjoying the process.
Looking forward to the series ❤️

I have a brown sugar oatmeal cookie recipe and I used to try to keep brown sugar all the time and I did as you. Ran out. So now I just measure out the amount of sugar I need and add molasses as required right in the mixer. I do that because I'm lazy and it's a lot easier. Thank you for your work and making these videos for us. Love from Texas.

Try using a old fashioned flour sifter. Just keep filtering it through until it's incorporated evenly. It's how I dye sugar for baking so I don't have to buy the little bottles of pre-colored sugars.

I just throw it into my cheap little food processor.. back to basics is what I call it... pancake mix is another....so is Bisquick baking mix, and cake flour.. oh there are so many ..and if I hav 30 items of clothing I’m lucky..ha ha.. I hate clothes shopping, so it’s easy 😄 But I’m definitely a thrifter... hardly ever buy anything new. I mean WHY? When there’s so much out there. I also repurposed just about everything... if it doesn’t work in my kitchen anymore it goes into my garden and tool supplies...sooner or later I find a use for it lol... great topic

I do the 4 season capsule wardrobe and I love it. Each time I do the change it is like getting a new wardrobe without the shopping. I have favorites in each season and when I get to wear them it is like visiting an old friend. Over the years i have added new items but always then remove the same number. I find because my per season numbers are limited I only have things that I love and I feel good in. I have added a few basic items that stay for every season, mostly short sleeved plain shirts because they work with cardigans and if off seasons have a warm day. So I keep a white, cream, gray, and black shirt.

I store my brown sugar in a square tupperware container. If you find it has become a hard rock .... set a slice of bread in over night and it rehydrates perfect... soft and fresh like new. This works on an old dry bag of marsh mellows too.

Hi Rachel, I am cooking and listening to you chatting away😊. Very 'gezellig' means something like 'cozy' in dutch. Just having less clothes and less need to think about what to wear, because you actually like to wear everything in your closet😊

I think the French ladies use a "capsule" wardrobe. They buy a few high quality, expensive garments that will last a lifetime, wear solid colors more and mix and match a lot. I have a friend who dresses that way. She always has a subdued look of elegance to her. It's a beautiful way to dress.

Clothes are my biggest problem when it comes to being minimal. I've started by just separating between tasks. Lounge, work, going out, jammies ect. And then I can put away/store the rest and rotate them out the next year or as often as needed. Great video too! I'll be trying this out today😁❤

Thank you for showing the process without using power. I'm off grid and don't have enough power to run kitchen equipment.
On minimizing clothes I have no doubt you will get there. You can still enjoy shopping for them, just buy for others. To reduce your clothing needs fast, just start washing them in a 5 gallon bucket, you learn fast just how many clothes you really need. At least I did.

I am gradually whittling down my wardrobe and other things as well. I don’t mind doing laundry, but I hate putting it away, LOL. “Capsule” wardrobe is a term I have heard, but something I have done for years. Actually, I grew up that way, simply because we didn’t have a lot of space. Put away the winter clothes, bring out the summer, etc. I can’t see myself ever being a full on minimalist, but I hate clutter, and my closet is a hot mess. LOL

Just a thought on the minimalist thing. Are you sure it's the right time to go minimalist, considering how things in the world are going right now? My thought is to hold on to those extra things, at least for a little while longer, because I'm seeing hard times coming and you just may be glad you have those extra things to dig into in the not-too-distant future. Sure, maybe don't purchase anything new (unless, of course, it's something you truly need), but I think having extra right now the way the world is heading would be the wiser thing to do. I think, too, that people would do well to learn some basic sewing so they would be able to repair their clothing (hems, seams, missing buttons, minor tears/rips, darning socks, etc.) in case things get too expensive to replace by buying new, or if items in stores get to be slim-picking. It's just a thought, Rachel. I really feel that although 2020 was "a year to remember," the upcoming few years may be even more "memorable." I mean not to criticize the minimalist line of thought, but rather I simply mean well by suggesting you reconsider getting rid of those extra items . . . at least for right now. And, by the way, thanks for the instruction on how to make our own brown sugar. This is what I'll do from now on! God bless you guys!

I am not a minimalist, but I have decided the best thing for me to do is buy clothing pieces that are long lasting, good quality, that I really like and only buying a couple of new outfits per season, but if I do...I get rid of outfits that I no longer enjoy, are getting worn out, etc. I used to have 2 closets absolutely packed with clothing and now I have 1 closet. This closet is very small, not a walk in, etc. As for shoes, I've gotten rid of everything that I just do not wear, is not comfortable really, or worn out. I used to hang on to shoes forever because I had to have a lot of business attire. Now that I am semi retired, I do not have to keep all of those things and the only time I wear a dress is if I'm going to a function. So, I basically keep 3 really nice dresses other than my "casual" broomstick skirts. I also went through all of my jewelry and only kept pieces that are real and that I wear often. I just absolutely hate clutter, so that was my inspiration.

@@1870s My biggest tip is to make sure that you get quality clothes (they last longer) and clothes that can be interchanged to make "different" outfits. And accessories.

I was wondering if you were going to have measurements that I could go by so I don't keep having the ahem, tempting molasses finger too. lol I've also just eyeballed the sugar and molasses direct to recipes.
I'm excited because this winter I'm going into it with five long sleeve shirts. :) Second time in my life I've had so many winter clothes. I don't mind laundry, just hate that it bangs up my clothes while I'm not even getting any use out of them. It's the wear and tear that bothers me. Mostly because, between the sun and laundry, my favorites start eventually looking like I'm an extra in a Mad Max film.
Hard to justify winter clothes, here, and I hate hate shopping. Yet I'm thrilled I won't be trying to wear my really old two cardigans, on just my forearms, all winter again. Haha When you said 30 items I was like oh, yeah maybe have that, started mentally counting... but then I'm not sure.
Are we counting backups? Like the identical skirt, packed, but ready to go when skirt number one, with the deep pockets and my added reinforced stitching, is threadbare? I've learned if I really love something manufactured, get another right away; because I won't see anything quite like it again for 10-20 years. I try to get backups of my top 3 favorite shirts, but often miss my window of opportunity.
If we are counting underwear and socks also that's a nope on 30 items! I also have the beautiful stuff packed away my parents send me when they catch me on a video call. At this point I could probably go on a seven day trip into a city and wear something different, but a few years slightly out of date, each day. lol It's just all too fragile and nice for my normal life.

Do you think it’s possible to achieve a similar result by using a food processor with the plastic blade (not the steel cutting blade)? Love your copper mixing bowls.

going to have to try this. I had to buy dominos brand dark brown last grocery trip because walmart didnt have dark brown generic and their light looked like tan white sugar. Seriously they cut the molass's down so much it really just looked like that 'sugar in the raw' stuff.

I was going to mention this. I was in Walmart last night and they were putting out their holiday bulk baking supplies in pallets in tge center aisle. Their light brown sugar looked lighter than the sugar in the raw i use for coffee! I even pointed it out to hubby it didn't look like brown sugar!.
I'm glad I have molasses. I think I'll just add it to my zulka sugar to make my own this year

Use the kitchen aid mixer or a stand mixer if you have one and can use food processor. Blender does not seem to work well I’ve Tried with my vita mix .
