    Yeh, thanks for emphasising the fact that knowing the “right” scales, and even knowing the right notes that someone played for a certain solo, only gets you to the first base of sounding good. Tone, feel, intonation, groove, inflection and articulation are the things most people neglect in my experience. Nice little video Jay! 👍🏻

    Good one!! As a guitar player for a couple decades and doing sax for only a couple years, this makes sense. On guitar, there is a “one box” for pentatonic soloing that most guys use and it’s generally in the “minor blues” mode. To make it “major/country” taste all one needs to do is take the One Box backwards on the neck 4 frets and start from there. You just described the same thing by starting on the 6th. So thanks for that I never really took the time to learn the actual theory.

    Hi, thanks for the great videos! I'd love a video on how guys like Sanborn 'split 'notes in the 'normal' register. It's not a growl,... and I can split certain altissimo notes, but they'll do it in the normal upper register.And quick advice in this possibly? Otherwise a video (maybe you have one already?) thanks

    I think it's super important to note that Sanborn is playing off the melody of the song. His solo fits so well with the song because of this. Sanborns rhythm fits the song as he plays off of James Taylors' phrasing also. Don't you think? Very appreciative of your videos, Jay. Thank you

    • @docsaxman
      @docsaxman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re absolutely correct. As soon as I saw the analysis I know that’s a fact. Minor pentatonic is not what we think. We are just playing the blues off the melody. Off of the IV chord Dave plays a classic blues lick not related to the relative pentatonic either. This is blues played based on the melody. It’s all about hearing. Old school.

By the way, I was truly inspired by your improvisation video from last year. Still having a lot of fun developing this side to my playing. Thanks.

    Really great video! You answered a lot of questions I’ve had for a long time! My other question is that I know that some metal mouthpieces can be a bit more edgy than a hard rubber piece and I understand that it has more to do with the shape of the inside of the piece than the material itself and also with how you’re shaping your aural cavity. But I’ve never really been able to get that bright cutting sound from my hard rubber.

    Great vid! What an awesome free lesso on pop/blues/funk soloing examples! I especailly liked how after explaining the nuts and bolts of how the minor triad is built on top of the major you say how even if they play it technically correct, it won't sound like David Sanborn. Then you went on to explain phrasing and melodic interpretation. Too often I hear players say they played a solo transcribed note for note, rhythm for rhythm but it didn't sound like the recording...That special nuance the player puts into their soling really gives them a fingerprint all their own! Love your material and makes me want to go back into the College/gig scene where we talked like this everyday! Thanks, Jay and Happy New Year!

    Thank you for your videos. But I'm confused. At the 4 minute mark you start to play the alto. The music that is displayed is not what you are playing. You start on high G#; the music notation starts on a B and is in an entirely different key. You are playing in the key of E, correct? Am I missing something?

    As a new saxophonist - I got my new sax and I find that the left hand - number 1 and number 2 keys are much flatter than the others and I have to consciously make a bit of effort to correct them with my embouchure . ( that is when 1 - 2 or both are pressed and 0 on right hand )
    There is another problem - the right hand 1, when 1 2 3 of left hand are pressed - it always try to flutter madly and I have to move farther out from the mouthpiece to quell it .
    I can manage these 3 troubles - I guess, however it is a nuisance . And I wonder what else I may find when I press some of the other keys in future .
    Is this usual for any given ( cheap ) sax ?
    Should I send it back and get a different one ?
    I used a cane reed and a synthetic and have the same troubles .
    And a third problem : When I use the tuner - it seems that most everything is too sharp - finding it difficult to bring it down . I moved the mouthpiece out some but then I got an air leak and had to push it back in . Maybe I can move the neck out some from the body ?

    But why does it sound like you're playing an octave higher than the actual notes on the staff...is it E1 or E8?.. major 6 or 13??? What I mean is when you were playing the thirds with the accent on the 2's.. the notes on the staff are in the first octave... But what I'm hearing is 2nd octave... @@bettersax OK, on closer inspection and listening to the original, actually the rhythm is fine, though i might quibble with not marking swung very. Statute eighths...I think what the me off is that the first 2 bars are kind of out of time, or rather the second bar seems off tempo from the first. It sounded like you hit the phrase in bar 2 early, and those three notes came out kind of triplitized, so it sounded like it should be "rest (2)trip let 3" there.
