The big reason Ripley's character works is because, on the page it's never made a big deal. Nobody has remarks in her direction, and she doesn't make self-pitying remarks or try to victimize herself. She's just a person doing what she has to do. She's a hard worker, responsible, educated, and a mother. Very relatable. Characters like Ripley, and there were many of them in the 70s and 80s, are so vividly and "good" to us because they had foibles and virtues we all relate to on a deep level.

Good eye on the Steadicam harnesses. Not many pick up on that. I worked in a trucking warehouse overnight solo at one point, and after reading the Aliens screenplay when there was nothing to do, every bump and air vent turning on was an Alien. Good times. :)
A few quick comments. I saw this in the theater with my dad when I was 11. I can still remember just how tense I was through the last hour. If you watch Aliens again watch the directors cut. It adds another 20 minutes of footage including Hadleys Hope before the Alien attack, how they found the ship, a quick scene where Ripley finds out what happened to her family during the 57 years she was gone, extended scenes between Ripley and Hicks, and more action scenes with automated turrets. I’ll also second Alien Isolation as a great survival horror game. It looks and feels like you are in the first movie and in the DLC you can play as the original crew voiced by the original actors getting chased through the air vents in the Nostromo Lastly if you decide to watch Alien3 be prepared for a slap in the face. The studio interfered with the film and made some very questionable plot choices. The assembly cut is probably the best one to watch.
Alien 3 was never gonna match Aliens ,what could ? ,and once I got over the initial dissapointment at the start...I kinda liked it's odd atmos and vibe and it grew on me the more Ive seen it.A very different film to this but I really don't think it's as terrible as ppl make out personally..
@@HULLGRAFFITI it’s not a bad movie (prefer the assembly cut) but I saw it in the theater and we missed the start of the movie by 5 minutes - took me several minutes to figure out what they had done. Couldn’t believe they would throw away all the audience good will during the opening credits. Made it hard to enjoy the movie that time.
I was so into this movie when it was in theaters. The writting and acting with great direction and fantastic special effects, really tell a story. I haven't seen anything this good in a long time.
Nominated for 7 Oscars: Best Visual Effects Best Sound Editing Best Sound Mixing Best Film Editing Best Original Score Best Production Design Best Actress It won Best Visual Effects and Sound Mixing. The film was a box office and critical success making $183 million ( 393 million dollars today) against a $20 million ($40 million dollars today) budget
I think the best way to describe Aliens is that it's as good as Alien as they are both excellent in their own way, Alien for pace, the twists, characters, setting, music so much. Aliens is excellent for continuing the story and developing the Ripley character with adding the mother element, also developing the company that Ripley worked for to show more about how they work, and extending the Alien creature story by showing the queen, then the music is epic.
You asked if there were any other badass female characters out there, and I can think of at least one other character. Sarah Conner from Terminator 1&2! If you haven't seen those films yet, I HIGHLY suggest you give them a watch.
this and twister are both very classical movies because of the risk and reward from looking at these movies in a different light. they went all out with the effects and really made movie history.
29:01 - Don't feel bad. Newer films could learn a thing or two from older ones. XD Certain franchises only have two proper movies in them: this franchise, Terminator, Blade Runner .
Funny thing is, the actress Jeanette Goldstein isn’t even Latina; she’s a white Jewish woman. But she fit and looked the role perfectly, including her Mexican accent.😊
Oh jeez! when you said 'looks like a good night out' with that cheeky grin of yours I almost fell out of bed laughing...lol your reactions are always hella entertaining.
Alright, I can't tell if you're watching the theatrical release or the director's cut. The latter adds important motivation for Ripley. Before leaving on her original mission, she promised her daughter she would be back before her birthday. This is why it's important that she was in suspended animation for so long. After waking up, she investigated what happened to her daughter, and found out the daughter was dead, so she missed her daughter's entire life due to the events of the first movie. When she left, her daughter was about Newt's age. This is important, because it establishes Newt as a surrogate daughter figure for Ripley. That detail changes the whole context of the entire movie because it reduces to a conflict between two mothers, each convinced the other mother's children must die for her own to live.
I'm glad you caught the Steadicam mount that they used, my cousin us a big Steadicam cameraman in the U.S. and it was cool seeing them repurpose it with a gun!
It's funny you mention movies like this making you want to play a video game; Alien: Isolation is an amazing survival horror experience, and for a more action oriented play, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is quite fun.
Hey, "Ryley Robinson," sign on with Alterra's Capital ship, the "Aurora." As the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief, you will be part of a Phase Gate building expedition. You may even get shore leave to check out the exotic sea life on an unexplored ocean planet. What could go wrong in "Subnautica"?;)
"I liked them. Well not the guy he was a bit useless." -SebScreen "You always were an asshole, Gorman." -Vasquez There are layers to Vasquez's last words. Gorman redeems himself in that moment by 1) going back to help his fellow space marines and 2) his choice to make their end a quick one. Vasquez is communicating respect to those choices even though she may not like him and there's a tenderness in that final moment when they both clasp hands over that grenade.
Ripley called both elevators when she was returning with Newt because she was in a hurry, so both elevators arrived. This is how the alien queen was able to ride the elevator up. The way the queen ends up on the escape ship is a bit of a cinematic cheat but it sure made for an exciting climax.
@@nickmitsialis Yep. There's a video on TH-cam somewhere where they talk about scenes and ideas that were thought of for the first movie but got deleted or changed. One of them was a radically different ending: When Ripley gets in the escape ship, the alien is there. Ripley tries to kill it but fails and ends up being killed herself instead. *Then the alien climbs into the pilot seat, puts on the headset and makes a distress call .... in Captain Dallas' voice!* This idea was fairly quickly shot down, but can you imagine?
@@nickmitsialis Well, basically the alien would be impersonating Dallas. Here's the very detailed but short video about that here: th-cam.com/video/BscpI-bcG7U/w-d-xo.html
The novelization of the first Alien introduced the characters by the dreams they were having in cryosleep, Even Jonesy, who dreamt of "gravity-bound mice". Also, wanting to punch Burke is the natural and correct reaction to his character, even the actor's mother felt that way.
I remember once when I was younger and I asked my Dad since people were so scared in the 50s (when he was a kid) of movies like The Blob and the like what would happen if you took this movie and played it in a theater in the 50s. He looked at me seriously and said people would have died of fright then laughed a lot. It's something we always joked about but honestly ya this movie to this day scares the piss outta me lol.
i learned a new fact about this movie today, wen they went in to production they announced ripples return but they forgot to ask the actress if she was willing to come back so ended up having to pay her 3 times what they could have
She wanted to come back but the studio didn’t want to pay her what she was asking. Cameron said he wouldn’t do the movie without her so the studio had to cave and pay her what she was asking.
Alien and Aliens, along with Terminator 1 and 2, stand as the very best examples I can think of of a standout sci-fi movie that spawned a sequel that improved on the original in every way while still staying true to the tone of the original. Aliens is probably my favorite movie. If you get a chance, watch the director's cut. It adds some key scenes that didn't make it into the theatrical cut. I don't tend to care much about director's cuts, but Aliens is one of those movies that I think is made better by the inclusion of these extra moments. With respect to opening the airlock: that wasn't actually that unrealistic. You wouldn't instantly be killed by either the falling temperature or the change in pressure. Even if you were blown out into space, you'd still survive for a short period of time and might even recover if you're instantly rescued and brought to medical care (the exact degree of recovery is debatable) but the rush of evacuating air would hit you like a small car. That would probably cause all kinds of injuries, even if you were able to close the airlock before getting blown out. Realistically, I think Ripley would have lost consciousness in the time it took her to hang on while the Alien was pulling her, climb up that ladder and close the door. But it's not totally impossible.
Saw this in the theater in my mid 20's. Absolutely awesome, and terrifying-I "semi" watched the whole thing through my fingers! The tension kept building and building throughout the film, that by the time Ripley yells "get away from her you bitch", the audience in the theater just completely exploded with cheers. It was as if everyone had been holding their breath until that moment. Loved your reaction. I should add that we went into the movie hoping it would be as good as the original, and were blown away by how good it was!
Damn, you didn’t see the directors cut where they tell you what happened to Ripley’s daughter. Most emotionally impactful moment of the whole film, and vital backstory for anyone intending to play Alien: Isolation
If you remember from the first Alien movie Kane had an environment suit on, and helmet which covered his face, but the face-hugger melted right through it and attached itself to his face.
James Cameron wrote THE TERMINATOR and Arnold agreed to be in the movie, but he was busy filming Conan the Destroyer, so James Cameron used the available time to write the script of ALIENS.
Literally my all time fave movie ever....Pure damn near perfect uncut escapism and the inspiration and influence for nearly 40yrs of sci-fi,comics and games since...No cgi and apart from a couple of background projection shots it totally stands up today...
So glad you loved it. This is my all-time favourite movie. It's so damn good. Sigourney Weaver is amazing as Ripley (such a BADASS). James Cameron rules.
What an amazing two movies! Personally I'm an Alien 1 fan but Aliens is equally incredible, two of the most amazing films of all time! It's really strange they never decided to make more... they made one amazing game, 'Alien: Isolation', but never another Alien film, or any prequel films either. I'm sure they would have been just as amazing as this film. Yep. Never made any other Alien films. Not ever. Not even one.
"Doesn't mean were engaged or anything" Ripley's daughter. The exchange of first names between Ripley and Hicks "Close your eyes baby" Really relevant parts that you sadly missed out (and I do understand there are potential Copyright worries.
It was quite an event in the day. I was too young to see it, so I snuck into a theatre and watched it with a friend who pretended to be my guardian. I love the 80s!
Dude, I love your reactions. You are going to have fun with this one. Listen, have you done "The Exorcist?" You might try that one if you have not. It's a slow burn but when it gets rolling......
Trivia for you Seb.. The actress that plays "Vasquez" is the same actress that played the mother comforting her kids in "Titantic" the movie. Also if you haven't seen Terminator 2 she plays Aunt of the young John Conor... btw loving the channel so far. Just subscribed.
You definitely did the right thing by watching the theatrical versions for your first viewing of each film, for two main reasons. First, you avoided having to think Ripley an idiot for not remembering the alien nest she had already seen in the longer version of the first film. Second, it’s best going into the colony knowing no more than Ripley and the soldiers. Good call.
I agree with you, I think we are in the minority, but it's just so much better going in blind. The ONLY thing I wish they had not cut was the scene where Ripley learns what happened to her daughter.
Man, you are first person to ever got so right with Steady Cam gun comment. So observant. The harnesses are actually Steadycam attachment modified with use MG-42 with scifi outfit to make the "smartgun".
The perfect Alien-Movies are through - now go for the "good" ones. But "ALIEN³" and "Alien: Resurrection" are much better than most Movies today. And then "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant". Even the two Alien vs. Predator Movies are fun.
What I love is James Cameron knew he couldn't out-suspense the original. So he went for less "horror" and more "terror". This is one of the most visceral sci-fi films ever made, being both terrifying and cheer-worthy. I certainly prefer the OG Alien, but Aliens comes pretty close.
That's the secret to a good sequel. You take the premise of the original film and throw it into a completely different setting. No new and unexpected powers and no simple rehash of the original. It's why both the Alien and Predator films were never as good after the first two, because anything after that was mostly just rehashing and adding extra things just to make a plot work.
Directed by Ridley Scott starring Sigourney Weaver in this sequel several years later in this sequel in which a new crew is around for another batch of xenomorphs around
I know a lot of people think Aliens is better than Alien, but it’s hard to compare because they’re completely different. Aliens is action packed while Alien is more suspenseful. I still prefer the slow build and tension of the first personally.
Cameron is a master at pacing a movie 1st halfs are always slow build up, then the 2nd half is a Crescendo of Tension that never lets go of you till the very end. Its amazing that this film is so darn good, when you know that it was an absolute nightmare to shoot... There's a lot of videos and articles about it, The Gestation of this movie was NOT without pain.
Also I want you to know when bishop is impaled and sitting in his own white blood I understand and chuckled at your “looks like a good night out comment” It does doesn’t it? ;)
There's actually a deleted scene where Ripley finds Burke already cocooned and impregnated within the main nest. He reaches out to her, telling her he can feel the alien inside him. Ripley says nothing and gives him a grenade before continuing her search for Newt. There's supposed to be a random explosion in the background; that was Burke killing himself with the grenade.
Although the legs aren’t the same, a TH-cam channel called the hacksmith made the mech IRL, as well as tons of other stuff, Thor hammers, cap shields, iron man tech, extendable plasma lightsabers
Both movies are equally good but in different ways. A lot of people compare both movies as to which is better but they are so different. Alien is a horror thriller and one of the best horror movies ever. Aliens is an action thriller and again one of the best. Aliens is comparable to The Terminator and Alien is comparable to The Thing.
If you havent seen it, you should do "The Thing" (1982). Great cosmis horror, probably #! horror movie of all time, and is defintiely my #1 favorite movie in general. BTW, you were absolutely on the money with the steady-cam gun. They used EXACTLY that for the harness holding the gun. They took apart some old steady-cam equipment and integrated it with the "Smart Gun". Smart gun was actually made with parts, stemming mainly from old German MG-42 machine guns, or "Hitlers Buzzsaw", with the trigger (if you pay close enough attention, is an old motorcycle handle and brake trigger. The other main Rifle they used, the "M41A" Pulse Rifle, was based mainly using an M1A1 Thompson sub machine gun from WWII as the main body, with a futuristic resin body shell fitted on it, and the grenade launcher was just a cut down Remington 870 with the pump handle and heat shield taken from a SPAS-12 shotgun. Not sure why Hicks calls the GL an "Over and Under", as it most certainly did not fire grenades from above the rifle barrel. There was only one GL on that rifle. Anyways, you definitely were on the money for quite a few things actually, pretty impressive I might say. the 50 years missing, the tail coming out first during Newt's capture, etc. You're a sharp fella, lol. But yeah, do 1982's The Thing SOON!
30:00 Cameron gave us 2 of the most bad ass Female leads; Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley( well to be fair, he gave her a more completed arc and a vengeance in Aliens, since Ripley was not written by Cameron at first) So when people where raving like lunatics on Twatter about how Cameron should be banned from writting Female Leads when Alita Battle Angel was released, it was mind boggling...
30 minutes of me making facial expressions tbh.. Did you prefer this to the original?
Yes this one is my favorite out of the whole franchise. An absolute classic
Its really hard to compare the two, but if I had to choose I'd probably choose this one though

It looks and feels like you are in the first movie and in the DLC you can play as the original crew voiced by the original actors getting chased through the air vents in the Nostromo
Lastly if you decide to watch Alien3 be prepared for a slap in the face.
A slap on the face is something you can get over. 3, as David Fincher put it, is like being sodomized.
Alien Isolation is what got me into the Alien-verse. I've never played any other video games than that nor seen any movies but the first two.
I love Alien and Aliens equally. They’re such different kinds of films that I don’t feel the need to rank one over the other.
I was so into this movie when it was in theaters. The writting and acting with great direction and fantastic special effects, really tell a story. I haven't seen anything this good in a long time.
6:55 -- funny you said that.. That was exactly what they used for the heavy guns.. Steady cam rig..

Probably the most enjoyable reaction video to a movie from you man .
@1:25 Seb: "When they say 'Aliens', plural, I hope it means loads... I wanna see loads!"
Me: I'll hold your popcorn.
"Get away from her you bitch!!!!" / "Game over man. Game over." LOL
"It's game over man. Game over!" It's so quotable that Seb quotes it in this reaction.
In my Top 5 movies of all time.
Still holds up despite being made back in 1986.
this and twister are both very classical movies because of the risk and reward from looking at these movies in a different light. they went all out with the effects and really made movie history.
@@craiglortie8483 You can't compare Twister to Aliens 🤣
29:01 - Don't feel bad. Newer films could learn a thing or two from older ones. XD
Certain franchises only have two proper movies in them: this franchise, Terminator, Blade Runner .
"I don't know if I can think of another female protagonist that's just as badass or more than this."
Yes, all of this. Ripley is the OG.
I don't think her majesty has ever been in an action horror film......I may be mistaken though.
There's a reason Vasquez takes point - because she is the most bad ass of all the marines. This was James Cameron's intent and idea.
Practical effects, miniatures and matte paintings. Gotta love em!
One if not the best sequel ever made. It's honestly fantastic.
Well not the guy he was a bit useless." -SebScreen
"You always were an asshole, Gorman." -Vasquez
There are layers to Vasquez's last words.
And there's the scene of the Queen seeing the door of the elevator open, and she tilts her head==you can tell she understands.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere Dallas as a 'Bug'? That would be 'heavy'.
Oopsie!
you need to watch the extended cut!!!!
One of James Cameron's best movies. Granted, he's made a lot of "best movies".
IMHO "True Lies" was his last really good Movie.
@@DeadpoolTesla I thought Alita was great, but he only wrote/produced that one and didn't direct it so I'm not sure if that counts.
@@DeadpoolTesla well he really just made 2 more movies.
@@matsv201 Yes - and they are 💩
Alien and Aliens, along with Terminator 1 and 2, stand as the very best examples I can think of of a standout sci-fi movie that spawned a sequel that improved on the original in every way while still staying true to the tone of the original.
James Cameron man...He has never made a bad film. All his movies are awesome!
"Looks like a good night out, am I right?" is massively underrated in these comments.
Ellen Ripley is, together with Sarah Connor, the biggest female badass heroes.
Agreed. I will always give props to James Cameron for taking well developed female leads and making them absolutely legendary.
difference is that Ripley is the main led
Your commentary and first time reaction to this made me laugh😆
Damn, you didn’t see the directors cut where they tell you what happened to Ripley’s daughter. Most emotionally impactful moment of the whole film, and vital backstory for anyone intending to play Alien: Isolation
Terminator: Gritty sci-fi horror
James Cameron: This needs some guns
Alien: Gritty sci-fi horror
James Cameron: This needs some guns
Loved your reaction, not sure if you're planning on doing Alien 3 but if you are just be prepared to temper your expectations.
I liked the first movie, but that to me, was much more of a horror movie while this was much more action.
The actress who plays Vasquez also plays the Irish mother who is telling her kids a bedtime story while the ship is sinking in Titanic
A mother can be the deadliest creature on earth when her little ones are in danger.
Alien is a suspense/horror/sci-fi movie. Aliens is an action/horror/sci-fi movie.
Glad you enjoyed it - it’s still my favourite all time film since I saw it back in 1987 - there’s an extended cut which is worth a watch too
"Doesn't mean were engaged or anything" Ripley's daughter.
"The tail will emerge from behind.." Very observant and quite good at perceiving what will happen next. 👍
Oh no not the extended version? There are so many iconic things in this movie. One of my favourite movie of all time.
The ONLY thing I wish they had not cut was the scene where Ripley learns what happened to her daughter.
the metroid games are inspired by these movies. the main villain is called Ripley, but the corridors and such are designed from these movies
You should watch alien 3 pretty please
Ellen Ripley is probably my favorite character in all of cinematography. No lie!
Love this and the original equally.
Fun fact: The title of James Cameron's original draft was "Mother"
Should have been b*tch.
I will say, I hate the theatrical cut of Alien 3. The Assembly Cut is really good though. And yeah AvP is bonkers but extremely entertaining.
That's not funny.
Agree 100%
Cameron is a master at pacing a movie
1st halfs are always slow build up, then the 2nd half is a Crescendo of Tension that never lets go of you till the very end.
Its amazing that this film is so darn good, when you know that it was an absolute nightmare to shoot...
There's a lot of videos and articles about it, The Gestation of this movie was NOT without pain.
So jealous of you getting to see it for the first time. It's a mind-blowing film and yeah They don't make em like anymore. Game over man GAME OVER!!!
Also I want you to know when bishop is impaled and sitting in his own white blood I understand and chuckled at your “looks like a good night out comment”
It does doesn’t it? ;)
I love all the references that COD used from this movie
There's actually a deleted scene where Ripley finds Burke already cocooned and impregnated within the main nest. He reaches out to her, telling her he can feel the alien inside him. Ripley says nothing and gives him a grenade before continuing her search for Newt. There's supposed to be a random explosion in the background; that was Burke killing himself with the grenade.
Ellen Ripley is an absolute legend! There is a reason she was included in the Bro Force lineup as a bro.
YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!! I’ve been waiting for this!!!! 😍😍 Great reaction!
Seb: “Looks like a good night out, am I right?” 🤣🤣🤣
If you havent seen it, you should do "The Thing" (1982).
Agreed. Ripley is badass.
I love jonsey the cat he is so cute and newt is not shot easily the best character
Notice at 6:09 that Hicks (in the background) is mouthing Vasquez words as she says them.
Sees seb react to Aliens, "LETS ROCK!!"
This movie is so typical 80's, still everybody smokes ordinary cigarettes everywhere in the future 😄
If you’d have told me then that most people would not smoke in the future I’d have never believed it!
Remember in Infinity War they killed Ebony Maw by blowing him into space at Peter's suggestion based on the movie Aliens. Well, there you go!
Yes!!! Ebony Maw’s powers may not be matched but the kid’s seen more movies 😆
30:00 Cameron gave us 2 of the most bad ass Female leads; Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley( well to be fair, he gave her a more completed arc and a vengeance in Aliens, since Ripley was not written by Cameron at first)
So when people where raving like lunatics on Twatter about how Cameron should be banned from writting Female Leads when Alita Battle Angel was released, it was mind boggling...
Loving the Ood reference! Definitely see the comparison with the alien planet base and ventilation tunnels
In Avengers Infinity War, the way the Maw dies is the same as the queen in this movie
