Simi-funny story about my stay there. Around 1974 I was a young man on a tight budget. Elvis is appearing in the show room, but, no way I could afford to see his show. The casino was next to the main entrant to the showroom and I watched as the line of lucky folks entered the showroom. The heavy doors were shut and a heavy curtain was pulled around the door I assume to cut down the noice. About half an hour later two couples dressed and the stunt of very wealthy people walk up to the shut door and quickly staff open the curtain and pull open the main door letting the 4 people in, I didn't recognize them but it was easy to tell they were very VIP ! As the door open I could hear Elvis "the king" in the middle of a song. Only about 20 seconds could be heard before the showroom doors were shut tight But, I have been able to brag I once heard Elvis Live!!!!!!!! LOL, sure, only 20 seconds, but still live.

I've stayed there several times, and like you said, it was because I was attending a convention. It is a great location for that as you can walk to the convention center through the hotel itself. I agree that it's not a hotel for anyone who wants to enjoy the excitement of Vegas on the actual strip. It's definitely the business traveler's hotel.
I also agree that the casino is very underwhelming. It is surprisingly small and oddly laid out, and there are limited options of slots and games to play.
I fully agree with everything you said about the rooms and the food!

Thanks for keeping it real, Ruby. As, I've stayed there myself in the distant past and I felt like we were isolated from The Strip as well and the casino, although large, didn't have a lot of slots in it - compared to others nearby on The Strip. We've stayed at either Palazzo or Wynn ever since and feel like we're right in the middle of the action. And when we're ready to go outside, there's action in every direction...without having to jump on a monorail to get there.

    • @DarinShortcom

@@travelmanMN Totally small, and very disappointing considering size of property. We went there the last time we were staying at Wynn, jumped on monrail and walked through scaryville to get to Strat entrance. We couldn't really find anything we went there to play, as they used to have 20-card video keno and we sure couldn't find that there this time.

We used to stay there a lot when it was Las Vegas Hilton. Last fall, we stayed there four nights to attend The Big Blues Bender. Although we got stuck with a worn-out unrenovated room, Westgate handled the event very well, with music in the Cabaret, theater and at the pool. They're still working on the rooms and elevators, but I still like it there. Parking (including valet) is still free, too.

I always enjoy your reviews Ruby, you are honest and thorough. I saw Elvis at the International in the mid 70s and what a thrill it was! The property looked pretty dead through most of the video, shame about the pool being closed. I agree that it's a convention hotel, there's not much to attract the young or old traditional tourist to Vegas. Very unexciting property, but your review was spot on!

My last stay at this hotel was at 2016. Use to stay here many a time when the hotel was Las Vegas Hilton and ex girlfriend and I enjoyed steakhouse (called Hilton Steakhouse). The film Indecent Proposal was filmed partly there when it was The Las Vegas Hilton. Sports Book Ruby is correct. Front desk should drop the world's largest sports book line (unless they want to say one of.) When the name changed to Westgate, this is when to me the property to me nose dived. The 2016 stay was via a contest win. 2 nights. Along with signing up for their football contest (also free as part of contest) and two connecting rooms(no idea this was part of the prize. All I knew was hotel room). Now the bad: The food outside of the steakhouse. The rooms it was hit and miss for taking a good shower and sometimes I was going to the alternative room to do so. And you needed to keep your head low due to timeshare sales people. And it seems that hotel is only busy for football, March Madness and conventions. The time I stayed, a Mrs. America event was going on and the late Florence Henderson hosted the event . Was hoping to see her around and about that weekend. No luck. it would have been fun to ask why Carol Brady did not make any family decisions until that god awful final episode of the Brady Bunch that the late Robert Reed wanted no part of.

The Westgate used to be one of my go-to hotels. It's good IF: 1) You are into the Sportsbook scene 2) You don't mind walking a lot (to-&-from monorail stations)
    3) You are on a budget (I think they price well because they are Off-Strip). Otherwise, your evaluations were correct on all other points. And I too prefer to just be on The Strip.

I stayed there last week, it was very nice. The food options were good, reasonably priced, and the SuperBook was amazing. The only downside is the additional transportation costs, because you are off strip. Uber was $12 to the strip, and $29 to Freemont (each way). The casino I remember being mostly red with a sort of "London Casino" decor and beautiful chandeliers. For a long time the casino seemed massive but newer ones are much bigger. One of the best hotel shopping arcades in town. And the pool was the world's largest at one time. You could play golf next door. It was a cool, happening place for quite a while.

i always stay at the westgate and the prior las vegas hilton for conventions at least 5x now and yea this isnt what the average room looks like but TR said ahead of time its an upgraded suite. the regular rooms ive paid for have always been clean and satisfactory. as TR said, this is purely a convention hotel for quick easy access to the convention halls especially after a late night out when the last thing you want to do is grab a monorail or taxi to it.
that said ive never had a bad experience at the westgate and with a monorail multiday pass you have cheap easy access to the whole strip for a fraction of the cost of a taxi/uber. i have always enjoyed the buffet as well. you arent far from ellis island either for a great prime rib deal, but if i wasnt in town for a convention i would def try for something more central located on the strip.

    • @johnkoponen3886

I do the same for the same reasons. It all depends on what your purpose of going to Vegas is. If you are looking for the best of the best all inclusive 5 star resort experience then Westgate isn’t it. However, if you are coming to Las Vegas for a convention, you want the closest hotel to the Las Vegas Convention Center, or you would be ok with a motel 6 or Super 8, but decide you would like just a tab bit better of an experience, then this would be perfect.

I tried experimenting with how Elvis might've been if he had reached the 80's. I tried using MIDI versions of some of his songs & using 80's generators like 'MiniMogue' (MiniMoog), 'Messiah' (Prophet-10), 'MemoryMoon' (Yamaha DX7), 7 it did sound radical 😎, which was never said about Elvis & his songs 🙂. The song of his that especially works in the 80's is 'A Little Less Conversation'. Pretty interesting 😊

Ironically my hubby and I were also at the Westgate SuperBook yesterday. I agree the food at the sportsbook is kinda meh. It's really convenient to stay there if you have business at the convention center but I'm assuming they might lose some of that business to Resorts World. The Sportsbook in there is massive and has historically been the biggest in Vegas although Circa may have taken that crown. It's worth it to check out the sportsbook or the steakhouse but I'd probably recommend party goers stay at another hotel on the strip. The building is oozing with history as Elvis, Liberace, Streisand, Manilow, and many others have performed there over the years when it was still the Las Vegas Hilton.

If you are going to be at the convention center, this is a great option. Sid's Restaurant super great. Slots are not bad, compared to any other casino. If you like the rewards from slots, this is the place.

What a nice room! I was lucky enough to snag a Lanai suite in March 2013. It was 48 degrees, rainy, with 30mph winds, so nobody was swimming that weekend. The Westgate isn't a perfect match for everyone, but it is great if you are a sports bettor, be it NFL weekend or March Madness. They also have free parking.

that sushi place is really good, and i believe its $35 for all you can eat. also the westgate is a known locals casino. its never going to have that vegas strip vibe

It’s name was the LVH for a brief period between Las Vegas Hilton and the Westgate.
Also, the Sky Villas were added well after Elvis’ death.
    Awesome video.

I believe LVH stood for Las Vegas Hotel after Hilton pulled out. Cheaper than changing all the logos and signs. Just removed Hilton.

I just got back from the Westgate. The customer service was great. They let me check in at noon which was only $25 which was a great deal. The room was very nice and the huge walk-in shower was great. What could’ve been a great stay was spoiled by elevator crowds. There were long lines always at the elevators. Then when you finally got one , it took forever to get anywhere because it stopped at every floor with lots of people waiting at every floor. Standing in line for elevators got very old very fast. I don’t go to Vegas to stand in line. So I won’t be going back.

Thanks for this review, you do a great job. The Westgate has seen better days and we would go because of the Las Vegas Chess Festival each year. The organization chose to move it to the Rio this year and the Rio was an excellent choice. The rooms were more spacious and even with an upgrade, it was half the price of the Westgate.

We loved the Hilton….The LVH was iffy. We do enjoy Westgate, but we miss the Star Trek Experience, and the feel of Hilton brand. Really dig the Fortuna, and the Superbook. Many great memories there.

How much do they charge you for firewood for the fire pit? 😅
I ve stayed at the Westgate and didn't mind being off the strip. The monorail was great and took no time to get you to the strip. Plus while you re on vacation who cares if you spend a lil extra time on the monorail its actually nice to look out and see the strip from and less walking like pilgrims on the strip. I like the fact also that the hotel is relaxed if you want to just linger a bit and not have wild bunches of people crowding up the place. Its been open for almost 60yrs out there so its doing something right for the convention crowd and middle aged tourists.
    Its a unique spot that

I saw Nancy Sinatra there when it was the International. Shortly after, it became the Hilton which was my favorite incarnation. I loved the Star Trek Experience and all of the Star Trek theming inside the casino and was sad to see that all go away. I have never stepped foot in the Westgate.
