Regret Buying Walker Mower H38I 52 Rear Discharge

  • When I bought the Walker Mower H38I 52 Rear Discharge I was doing different properties than I'm doing now. I struggled for awhile as to buy this machine or a scage vride and I believe I made the wrong choice. I do think the walker is a fabulous machine, but I dont think it's any better than the scag vride.

    Looking good Brian I would even fold the deck up on the Walker if its an issue I know another guy near me does that so he can fit it in his trailer

    Hey Brian. I use the grass flap with gator blades and no baffles on my hustlers. Works great as a side discharge and a mulched. Been doing this for 3 years now. Works great and love the grass flap. I have 4 of them now. Joel

    We need to educate our customers. Side discharge or mulching is way better for the lawn, and if you only cut a third of the total blade length, like we're supposed to, it looks just a good. It's just better all the way around and it's up to the pros to let the customers know what's up. That's why they call us, they need us to guide them through their lawn care

      @jimm638 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      mulching once in a while is fine. mulching every single time or side discharging (which isn't mulching) is worse for your lawn over time....and looks bad

  • @ricepadi29
    @ricepadi29 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the mulch kit will disrupt the flow necessary to side discharge effectively. We run the grass flap on our scag tiger cat 2 and it really helps keeping clipping from going where you don’t want them but it will leave clumps if thick wet grass. Going back over a few clumps is always better than spraying a fence, house, or car though. You will like it.

    I totally agree with there is a place for each mower..I use to mow 16 acers the people wanted by there house done with the walker bag mower and the rest with the John dear...the side discharge is nice and the mulching blade will help alot with not leaving clippings

    I have the Scag 52 V-ride with the mulch kit. In the fall with dryer grass and leaves, it is amazing! Does a great job. But spring time have to remove it. will not handle damp grass like fescue. Never tried it with just the discharge plate off.

    The grass flap on the scag would be good, but it would only allow the right blade to discharge since the mulch kit encloses each individual blade so the center and left blades are still going to be in mulch mode.

      John Deere's Stand on mowers now offer the automatic mulch on demand that allows the mower to do both mulching and side discharging just like the zero turns. All parts are built into the deck.

      @seanmurray3284 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I run them on my scags with just the flap. I ran mulching blades and closed it to mulch all fall with awesome results. Will need the kit though to avoid the stripe when using on grass. Just don’t have a need for that application. In the fall just open it and run a couple passes to disperse the stripe piles.

    I love walker but they are too big for the trailer IMO. They are also harder to hop curbs and get in tight spots. Love my stander and sit downs. I had to quit bagging years ago for cost reasons and time reasons. Hope you guys have a great season.

    Definitely sell the walker 52. Really gotta check out a Scag turf tiger 2 .61 or 72 really kicks butt! Unfortunately the Scag mulch kit puts baffles all around each blade eliminating the cross over for side discharge. With the grass flap on there it would only allow the right blade to discharge, other two would mulch all the time with the mulch kit on.

    I know when your doing cutting going down one way and turning around and coming back leaves nice stripes, but do you need to do that on city land cause you lose a few seconds of cutting every time you do that. All those seconds end up adding up by the end of the day.

      That works well if you aren't cutting more alot of grass off total length. I imagine if you are cutting a 1/3 or more clippings will add up. At least at the farm it does.

    The first year I was in business I learned very quick that bagging just doesnt make sense unless you are charging double . Does it look better ? Sure , but side discharge looks just as good if your only taking 1/3 rd the grass off . I would need a tri axle truck to follow me if i bagged all my property's lol . I do bag for clean ups but thats it .

      Side discharge when done at the right height and patterns- is great. I stopped bagging because it cost ME too much. Customers barely want to pay the minimum price as it and then add a bagging fee- not gonna happen. I spoiled my customers for my first two seasons but then i just started only looking for bagless properties and eventually even made some of my current customers switch side discharge. And of clutter theres always those who said no so i just dropped them. Do what works for YOUR pockets.

    The BEST MOWER I've ever come across is one that has been using this concept for decades ... I have an OLD WOODS LIQUID COOLED 60 " 3 Blade Side-Discharge Model with a deep - five out front deck that articulates down into ditches no problem & is a partial sealed off mulching deck running Mulching Blades with a Grass Flap ...I can cut everything from putting green high grass to a couple feet high tough stringy grass and it spits it out like Fine Confetti & this OLD WOODS doesn't complain a bit ...Also , this is a REAL NO TROUBLE MOWER .....Had zero problems with it other than normal wear & tear & things I caused ..... I've had this mower so long that I don't know if they're even still in business ...If NOT , do yourself a favor & find an OLD " WOODS " 60 " or Bigger , Restore it & go mow for a couple of trouble - free decades like I have ...Simpler is better ...Everything is fairly easy to see & get to ...

    Personally, we use ExMark. IMO they’ve got the best craftsmanship when it comes to overall performance. We have 5 contracted cities, shooting for 6 over the fall season. We have 72’s, they’re riders, as well as 60 walks and stand-ons, 52 walks, etc. I test drove a couple of walkers, scags, toros, deeres, wright, you name it i’ve done it. ExMark might be pricey but with warranty and good customer service it’s a great choice to look at. - A viewer from Tampa Florida :)

  • @sclawns5257
    @sclawns5257 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    My 72 never scalps. float your deck. here is how. take the stander to the dump and leave it there. Get a 72" Hustler sit down ztr. when you ride it put your hands on the sticks and your foot on the lift peddle with almost enough pressure to raise deck. this way anything you don't see you will feel in your foot and raise it right up without even slowing down. when you get real good you will want to weld on an additional lift peddle for the left leg so when you run a steep side slope you can still reach even though your body is slid sideways and once you have two lift bars you will find yourself using them always to the point if you get on a mower even same model without the dual lift bars you will feel nervous as your first yard. you should be constantly adjusting height of deck while mowing not stop change height then mow. its dynamic standers can never do what a sit down mower can. Remember to always ride with your feet on the lift peddles applying almost enough pressure to lift the height setting pin is for minimum height not run height. run height is done with your eyes and your feet at full stick.

    We use mulch kits with baffles all year . It works great if you have the biggest motors available for mowers. I dont think that will work with the grass flap because, most kits with baffles dont allow you to remove the plate without removing the baffle at the same time.(usually baffle and plate is is welded together) I would run kits all the time. Check with (Beach River Landscapes),they run kits all year.

    Also scags r weird on the lift you may have to move front battle up or down to get the crisp clean cut you want I run mine in the middle. Battle stays in the middle.. Fall when just mulching I move spacers below the blades bringing them higher in the deck creates lots of lift less blow out works great for me. Sucks set up like that for cutting but strickly mulching it works great.

    From what I've seen a mulch kit plus a side discharge is an optimal configuration - gives you more versatility on putting the grass where you want it or just mulching if you can't blow grass out the side.
    You could also look at talking the Walker mower and using it towards a trade-in for another Wright - 61" for those smaller properties. Has a slightly wider deck than the Walker plus it's most definitely shorter...Win-win situation?
    Or maybe you don't want another mower. Maybe instead you could use the trade-in as an opportunity to get a proper brush hog, maybe a walk-behind power sweeper. Sure your backpack blowers do a nice job in cleaning up leaves and things, how about big piles of sticks and trash, rocks and gravel? You can take the sweeper anywhere, grass, sidewalks, back alleys, ditches etc.

    Bagging is nice for your own property but sucks mowing 20 plus lawns a week. I payed $3000 for my scag bagger but took it off a month later. Takes up room on the trailer too.

    Yes! ANY door "flap" on a side discharge does not make it an instant "mulching " deck, ya gotta install the mulching kit, & besides... Mulching deck set up is far superior in that you can NOW mow against obstacles from opposite direction without worry/ less time (again) top notch info.
    & I've always thought walker are over rated.

    The Hurricane mulching kits are amazing. If you cant mulch it, then you wouldn't of been able to side discharge it either. That's how good they are. Big hp motor is a plus when mulching though.

    I don’t get why every video title says something negative and then the video is positive on the topic. What’s the deal with that? Just be honest in the title geez.

    I have a Scag Tiger Cat 48 with a mulch kit. As long as the grass is not super high I find no need to side discharge. I know the mulch kit keeps the clipping under the deck and throws everything straight down so you could only discharge with the right side blade. I went to the Oregon G6 blades and cutting the taller grass is easier. Good luck in finding the right combo for your needs

    SCAG! They says it's Simply the best... love my turf tiger. I have the advanced chute system and run high lifts (oregons ) scag oem blades r good too..for side discharge for cutting sping/ summer. Fall throw on gator blades and does great for mulching leaves. Total leaf removal well it doesn't get rid off all the leaves as the walker would but does a really good job. Walkers are super awesome for bagging but that's about there strong point in my opinion they cut good but like you said there big. All about what fits ur needs. Think you'll be pleased with the grass flap mulching idea. Get the right blades and you won't have any issues. Good luck in finding what suites ur needs.

    Walker shines on those medium sized residential mows. The ones that are too big to push but small enough you can finish in under 30 minutes with the walker. The box on back allows you to slip through gates and tight spots where mowers with tubes and bags won’t fit. Bigger lawns , public spaces, etc., a side discharge or mulching mower is better, no bagging, larger decks, etc. Both have their place.

    Just saying I used mulch blade on my mowers every time, Grass is less discharged and some yards you don't have to blow clippings as much with the flap you may not have to make as many passes is the grass is thick.

    I’ve got a grassflap on a ZTR. Just feather the grassflap about 1/3 of the way open when you don’t want to close it all the way but don’t want to throw the grass far. When you do have it closed all the way, it’s only for a short time. It’s not like it going to leave a trail of cut grass every time it’s closed. I’m a big fan.
    Maybe holler at Kevin (Fall River), he outta know in regards to those Scags

    Not sure how your mulching kit set up is.. but my Exmarks have baffles to keep each section blocked off and has wavy blades to suck things up ..so the discharge side would be the only section discharging if we put on a chute block....maybe yours is different

    I wouldn’t trade my 5000 hr exmark lazer for a brand new stand behind mower.

    As someone who works for a walker dealer I can tell you that all walkers are shit no matter how good the cut. A 1 year warranty for the price of car isn’t worth it. Stick with scag and bobcat.

    One I use my workers for on fall cleanup and few people know abour. It is the best machine to push piles of leaves towards the leaf vacuum so you only have a little left over to blow . No plow nothing only the walkers can do it that way. Or you can came back and bag the rest.

    Yes....Walker mower only good for a dedicated bagger mower. Iv always wondered why some guys buy front mount mowers to just cut only. They take up to much real estate on a trailer.

    If I remember right, the JD 7iron had the mulch kit as a standard. Could be wrong. Also you can get them to have a controlled discharge chute. So you can both mulch and discharge simultaneously.

    I mow for my county doing the highways and i have to say we use hustlers to do tight stuff we cant get with the tractor, and them things can take a freaking beating, mowing the highway is nothing like the easy mowing of residential property's the worst i have seen is bending blades like bananas hitting rock and god know what else is on the side of the road, and getting flats. Them things are tough.

    well we as farmers we also want to beat the rain but we can let the machinery run 24/7 and still stress it out (;
    and well for that walker as i see my grandpa had alot of tractors also for backup and if you only put a couple of hours on it. then it are expensive hours we traded 3 older tractors in for a new one and because we make the hours on the machine it is cheaper then using 3 tractors.
