NYO-USA Performs Revueltas’s “Sensemayá”

The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA) performs Revueltas’s “Sensemayá” with conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. This iconic tone poem with expansive wind and percussion sections is based on a poem by Nicolás Guillén that recounts an Afro-Cuban ritual.

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s national youth ensembles bring together the brightest young American instrumentalists for free intensive training and performances on some of the world’s greatest stages. After being unable to gather in the summer of 2020, the 100 musicians of NYO-USA (ages 16-19) convened in July 2021 at Purchase College outside New York City. Their three weeks of coaching and rehearsals culminated in digital concert performances.

Personally I play the tuba solo on a C but an F tuba sounds super stylistic for this purpose

The interpretation is too stylized. I would prefer it to sound much more aggressive, and rougher and rougher, like Latin American orchestras play it.
