As a fellow trombonist, it’s weird to watch another player’s performance and have a strong feeling of what notes they’re playing without having perfect pitch. It just illustrates how much the brain sees the instrument as an extension of itself!
When I was a young player in the 80s my weaknesses was always range..Back then we were influenced by the likes of Watrous and Fontana, who made flying around in the stratosphere seem so effortless. It was something I could never do, and despite having good technical ability, I gave up pursuing jazz. This guy teaches us a great lesson, in that you can still make the trombone sing without going above top C.
