Great video. I’m a huge fan of Old Town. I hope in the near future they sell that drive separately so I can put it in my sportsman 120 pdl. It’d be a shame if they didn’t.
Looks like a well thought out, well engineered $6000 kayak. 👍. I have a $3500 Hobie Outback that I put a $1500 Bixpy drive on to serve as my motorized “big water kayak”. I can also mount the same drive on my $1000 Wilderness Systems Tarpon and have a very maneuverable “skinny water” kayak for the same money.
Great run down! As a Jackson eDrive owner, I realize that controlling the speed, etc. will involve use of my feet/toes to turn rheostat (Jackson) and now buttons for the OldTown in order to keep from having to constantly lean over. I think a reach stick to hit the buttons would also be useful, since a remote FOB like the autopilot uses would be too much money added.
I’m not super familiar with the autopilot fob, but it would’ve been very easy to adapt a fob to this motor. It shouldn’t have been all that of an expensive option.
@@DarrinBoggs-jh1vp Since the ePDL still relies on a rudder for steering, the motor is unidirectional and the FOB would only be for on/off and speed control. Plus- the clutch still needs the pedals to disengage the drive for reversing. If the steering could be remote controlled, that would be good-but the steering mechanism is different than the autopilot which has it integrated into the trolling motor.
A fob similar to what bixpy has wouldn’t have been hard to integrate. It could’ve easily operated the motor independent of the clutch. No different than a e-bike using a thumb or twist throttle and also having the assist with the pedals.
You know how I feel about motors on yaks. That said, this is definitely innovation and a really good marriage of muscle with electic power and just makes sense. Heck, I'd even be willing to give the hull and system a test drive to see if it'd fit my needs. See, I'm not allergic to change.

@@ThatGuy-qg4ww FF launched an innovative system, no doubt. The patented ePDL+ gives the angler the ability to utilize manual pedal, power e-assist (like an e-bike), or full motorized mode. Lots of options on the market for anglers these days!
@OldTownCanoeKayak my biggest issue is that I've a background in kayak racing. I like my hulls skinny, long, sharp-veed, and fast. I understand all hulls are purpose built. The type I prefer is built to the purpose of efficient passages over standing/deck space. I make funny faces trying to figure out how anyone comfortably paddles a heavy, wide, flat-bottomed hull from an elevated seat. So, for me to consider trying it, it is quite the achievement there for y'all.
My kayak outing/ fishing time of pedaling is 2-1/2 hrs straight two to three times a week, but when it's time to get back to the launch in a hurry due to bad weather or a fish that needs to be filleted in a hurry, the cruise control with the higher speed is going to be great. I might add that I love my Sportsman 120 PDL and I did add a bow and stern light for trying to avoid being a "Speed Bump" as the lobster guys calls us kayakers.
Nice video! As for the kayak all I gotta say is “nope” 😂 for 6k I can get an autopilot with a nice battery for that price. One thing I will say is I watched a podcast with some anglers on genes channel, I think it was drew Gregory that said this kayak is built for people that want to just have fun, but for tournaments this is not the kayak for that, but like you said, this looks better for people who may not be able to use normal peddle powers. Keep up the awesome icast video!
This is a really cool idea in my opinion. They missed when they didnt make it available to older bigwaters and predators. So the Bigwater Pdl still has the same problem of rudder in the way on the stern so we cant mount a motor back there without replacing the rudder.
The epdl does look cool & the whole trolling motor on kayak is cool. But on other hand I think trolling motor on kayaks kinda making some people lazy too. Now people that wanna get out on water in a kayak but are to out of shape or lazy to paddle or pedal just use some type of propulsion. Otherwise they wouldn't be out on a kayak if they actually had to do the work to get around. I've been kayak fishing for just over 9yrs now. I've always had a pedal drive & never owned a trolling motor. I wouldn't put a trolling motor on my yak if someone gave it to me. I'm fine peddling. I can peddle all day all weekend without getting worn out or sore. Its easier than walking. Way more stealthy & quiet than a trolling motors. To each their own...
To each their own, indeed! We can appreciate those who choose full manual propulsion. We definitely have something for everyone within out lineup. See you out on the water!
That epdl would be a great one to try and make modification brackets to fit other kayaks. Would love to see it fit my P127 that I just bought. Unfortunately, I would probably would have to register my kayak, in Missouri, since it might be considered a trolling motor. I think states need to rethink kayak rules.

Why don't the kayak mfgs. put their energy in finding a way to make a better poly boat that the sun will not rot in a few years? I know, they sell more boats if they don't. For the price these things go for, UV should not affect them.
Old town missed big by not making this an accessory. It’s bs about kill switches lol. Any kayak person can rig a kill switch. Also, I have never heard a yaker say he can’t wait to go out in high swells or choppy water lol😂.. 7000$ salty crap..
Stopped watching halfway through. This is just an Old Town commercial. Lol'd when you said it was a good choice for someone who couldn't pedal. For almost every need tgis boat supposedly meets, there is a better solution out there. If this boat sells, it sells, if it doesn't, it'll be on sale.
@@OldTownCanoeKayak For a total of about $300 plus the cost of a battery, a person can cut out a filler plate and install a minn kota endura max 40. I just did exactly that for my Salty after seeing what the ePDL looked like, and the price. If Johnson Outdoors doesn't start making drop in electrics for their existing kayak line, someone like NV will and completely own the wide open market.

There's something for everyone out there on the market these days. We're OK if this isn't for you, but come give one a test drive this fall on our demo tour. The Battery size and chemistry choice was all about having the most power-dense battery we could get but as small as possible. It's the equivalent to a 12v 60AH battery, but much smaller and lighter.
Gezz they really will try anything to beat the unbeatable SS127
The SS127 is a great platform, too. There's something for everyone out there these days!
It’s a $1500 kayak with a $4500 pdl w/ 3hr runtime motor. Nope. I can pick up a new dealer BW132 for $1100, add a spot locking xi3 with an all day lithium 60Ah batt for about half that $6k price tag. Not making it backwards compatible with all the pdls they’ve already sold tsk tsk. Price too high and not for their existing community. Did not live up to the hype in my book.
Thanks for the feedback! There is something for everyone on the market these days if this isn't for you. See you on the water!
Its not for me, just like i dont like ebikes. I rather just have a motor!
Thanks for the feedback! See you out there on the water!
Too much money IMO.
There is definitely something for everyone on the market these days. Lots of great options and configurations to match anyone's budget or desire. 👊
