My aunt would put pork belly into this. Fried pork belly pieces.
I've now finished the video. My aunts' version would have a more pronounced crust. The crust was usually dark brown and crunchy.

That sounds delicious too. I have sometimes tried adding bacon pieces as well which is good also.

It’s never used as a side dish in Lithuania - It’s a main meal..

In addition it is worth noting that the English language recipes I came across were all problematic in this way and others so I am quite confident readers and viewers will see your comment as extremely valuable. Thanks again for sharing!

@@WorldTravelerCooking it’s similar in product content to English hash browns, so I understand why some might consider it as a side dish. Kugelis is though quite a hearty meal, can be even made with pieces of chicken , pork mince or even smoked pigs ear ( it’s a delicacy in Lithuania).

@@loona1983 So first on the side dish bit... I only saw this in American recipes and half of those confuse shredded with grated potatoes, so there is that.... But apparently at least some Lithuanian-Americans use this dish in place of mashed potatoes in thanksgiving (often with bacon added).
As for the notes of what else can be added... the chicken and pork sound really good, but the smoked pig ear sounds fantastic. I have only had braised pig ear as a Chinese-Indonesian dish but it it amazing and the idea of smoked pig ear in this dish sounds absolutely fantastic. Thanks a bunch! You have given me one more food I absolutely must try sometime!

@@WorldTravelerCooking as a Lithuanian I love smoked pigs ear, but because of the texture it’s not really liked in other countries. Think in USA it might be found in most of Lithuanian food shops ( here in UK we have quite a few) , or guess , if you have a smoker, it can be done at home. All you need to do when making kugelis, just cut it up in bite size pieces and add smoked ear instead of the bacon... Aswell as a sauce for kugelis, can sauté generous amount of onions on a little bit of butter, then add some milk / cream mixture and add some flour to thicken it up . Season with some salt and pepper. I always make it as a sauce for kugelis.
