Auto destruct on Star Trek

  • Firstly, I know the last few explosions aren't auto-destructs, but I like the way they look.
    This is a video of most of the self-destruct and auto-destructs on Star Trek. I like how Captain Janeway can order a self-destruct by herself, but when the male Captains call for a destruct sequence, the computer asks for 'additional authorisation'.

    it kind of makes sense that : the auto destruct sequence got less convoluted over the years. Imagine the ship being overrun by hostile boarding party ,and , the captain , the first officer ,and , the engineer have to enter their codes , then , the captain is asked for a further confirmation code, then the first officer approves confirmation , then , the engineer has to solve the captcha.......

      Destroying a ship, especially the Enterprise is like a woman who is on life support and it's the only thing keeping her alive and the three usual most important people in her life all painfully decide to pull the plug out:
      In the Enterprise's case
      The closest thing she has to a father: Scotty
      The closest thing she has to a husband: Kirk
      One of her sons, youngest in fact as the whole mission was about her eldest son: Chekov being her youngest and the whole reason they're in this situation was for her eldest: Spock. Of all the senior officers, Spock by far served on her the longest. Serving under Robert April, her first captain (his only appearance thus far was the TAS episode "Yesteryear". TAS is per Paramount themselves retroactive from 2002 to the present and of course prior, is considered canon to the original timeline so, he counts. His next two captains need little introduction being Pike then of course, Kirk)

    • @ServantOfOdin
      @ServantOfOdin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** That's still a milewide difference. First Office is not the same as tactical officer. Not by status, not by responsibility. I don't know if you've served, but there's a clear line. Of course a higher-ranking officer can take over the duties of a lower one (Picard once took over helm to get clear of the Aceton-assimilators that took down a Promellian battlecruiser), but that is only of temporal status. Cavil wasn't on that position all the time. He was the first office, he had other responsibilities.

      I agree. Even without the unplanned detour to the Delta quadrant, the ship was small, maneuverable and designed for short-term dangerous missions. what people are forgetting about janeway, officially her bridge crew is DEAD. so the computer wouldve cancled the need for their codes. command codes for things like auto distruct, arent just passed along like pips and access, they are starfleet issued, by starfleet command. once janeway put in her crew was dead, their codes became invalid, yes she could grant access to restricted materials to chacotay and give him his own codes to lock the system and such, but not for self distruct.

    • @schwarzerritter5724
      @schwarzerritter5724 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      James Black
      Confirmation is required so a captain does not blow the ship up because he is mind controlled, suffering from temporary insanity or because the kitchen takes too long with his lunch. If the captain could just declare the officers dead, that would not really offer any protection.
      But let's assume the confirmation codes go up the line instead of down and the captain can blow up the ship alone if all the other senior officers are dead. Janeway could give out new confirmation codes. That just shows what kind of captain she is. Janeway is so sure she will never be emotionally compromised that she sees nothing wrong with being able to kill everyone on the ship with a single command.
      Maybe she needs the leverage against Chakotay. The only senior officer she can trust is Tuvok. Chakotay and Torres are former terrorists, Paris was in prison, Harry is greener than a well trimmed hedge, the Doctor could just be turned off. But she could give out confirmation codes to some cremembers and just not tell Chakotay about it.

      It's more likely that an Intrepid-class ship with a smaller, purpose-built crew simply requires a less stringent self-destruct sequence than a Galaxy-class ship which hosts hundreds or thousands of families and is not expected to be in danger nearly as often. Also, given how far Voyager is from the rest of Starfleet, it's entirely possible they changed the computer protocols given the possible need for a quick detonation so that their technology doesn't fall into alien hands. That makes way more sense than the computer being unable to accommodate missing or dead crew members, seeing as how there are other cases where that logic doesn't hold up. (e.g. Worf not being part of the regular Enterprise E crew in First Contact, yet still required to confirm the command)

    The person who uploaded this video made a comment that Janeway was able to activate her self destruct on her own without additional command codes. It's not that Janeway is more trustworthy as to when to destroy her ship, you have to remember every other command officer died on the way to the Delta Quadrant. Chakotay may be the First Officer, but the computer doesn't recognize him because his Starfleet status is retired, and there was no way for Starfleet Command to reactivate his status at the time of the episode in question. Janeway has complete control of the command functions of her ship, because she is the only high ranking officer on the ship. Harry Kim is an Ensign, Tom Paris, and Tuvok are Lieutenants. And Neelix is a weird half-cat/half-creature type species. There's no other high ranking official Starfleet officers on that ship.

      Tuvok is actually a lieutenant commander, and also the second officer. While Paris is a prisoner brought in solely for his "ability" to push buttons to pilot. Kim was considered a senior officer despite his rank of ensign. There was actually a short story called "Command Code" in the "Distant Shores" anthology which was set very early in the series (supposedly 2 days after "Caretaker"), where Janeway was injured and Tuvok usurped Chakotay and disabled his command codes.

    In the TNG tech manual, it mentions that Starfleet vessels have secondary destruct devices scattered through the ship's superstructure in case the computer can't just overload the matter/antimatter reactor. In such situations, the explosive packages, in concert with any remaining and accessible photon or quantum torpedoes are used to inflict enough damage on the ship's superstructure to incapacitate it. Plus, Rule of Cool applies as always.

    @bennymutant Especially in that sequence, where his semi-halting delivery actually goes to make the scene all the more poignant-- Kirk is ordering the destruction of his ship, *his* ship, maybe not his first ever command, but definitely the one that made his career, and one that probably feels as close to him as any living member of his crew...and after all he's been through with her, now he has to destroy her. It literally brought tears to my eyes to watch this scene.
