Love the design of the auto-destruct system, it's so physical and complicated involving multiple steps, to avoid any possibility of accidental activation. Communicates that this is a very serious last resort, and that you're not gonna have much chance to change your mind. The alarms, flashing lights and steam (and lack of music) all amp up the anxiety level in the last few minutes. Just brilliant. (Also if you look closely at the matrix of buttons... the designers were having some fun...)

The whole point is the impracticality and absurdity of the situation adding to the tension. I love this scene because of that. If any real vehicles actually had self destruct systems, they would not require complex, confusing steps to activate. The double lever would be sufficient to prevent accidental activation. The rest only causes frustration and makes the user even more stressed. Situations demanding self destruct will be stressful and time sensitive, we see Ripley's frustration. There is absolutely no reason for the system to be in a random part of the ship, under a hatch and with a console on the floor. It would be located on the bridge. Love how it's like the company is giving Ripley a final FU after they forced the xeno on board

As for making it complicated, the double lever would stop accidental activation, but the extended scuttling procedure would help prevent malicious activation. Maybe one of the crew is a terrorist, or has gone nuts. You want time to stop them. As for how long it takes... what would be the need for a self-destruct system? Being stuck on collision course with a planet would be one reason, but you'd have plenty of time to realise there's a problem, set the self-destruct, and abandon ship. It only seems frustrating in the film because Ripley is in a very strange situation, where she is using the self-destruct as a weapon. I doubt that was ever the intention of the designers. Finally, there's the possibility that it's that complicated because it _needs to be._ Ripley is shutting down the safety controls and cooling system on a nuclear reactor. That probably means multiple redundant computers, and multiple pumps (including the ones that would turn on if others failed.) She also seems to be manually removing components from the system. Sure, you _could_ tie all that together so it's controlled by one big red button, but given the possibility of an electrical short in that wiring, you probably wouldn't want to.
I love that she has to pause to read the instructions. The crew were likley never trained in how to do it as there should be no real reason for them to do so.

Airplane pilots carry a reference manual on how to operate the airplane, because there are certainly aspects that are not very mundane, so it is always necessary to have a procedures manual and not depend on the operator's memory. That's why the script is perfect, it's what would happen in the cabin of an airplane, a submarine or an oil well.

Yeah it's a great design and the fact it repeats at very fast pace certainly adds to the stress levels. Most alarms you hear on spaceships in films, or even real Navy ships, are long and slow. This one is so good 👌

The rods that suck in are individually machined using several different metals plus acrylic, the level of detail is possibly the main reason this film hasn’t aged at all.
I love how near the end of Alien Isolation, Ripley's daughter has to go through a similar experience with technology on hand at the time. They really did nail the aesthetic in that.
The fact that the scuttle system can be activated by one person is an interesting tradeoff. It makes it more vulnerable to terrorism and/or unauthorized use, but it also means if you are the only person left alive, you can still do it, and you will probably need to.
Also, that first step (pulling the small red handle) sets off a small alarm which, going by logic, would be reflected on the bridge or some place where an officer will likely be. So if someone is playing around with the system, you can rush to stop them and throw them in the brig! The way I see it, such a civilian freighter would have a self-destruct system for one very good reason (since military value is not a concern)... if you've lost total navigational control of the ship and you're on a collision course with an inhabited planet, you will want to blow it up while it's still a safe distance away, because letting it crash into the planet could kill hundreds of thousands of people, even if the reactor doesn't undergo nuclear detonation since the immense velocity will do most of the damage (it would be like an asteroid impact).

Its likely mostly computer controlled, that would explain as to why the cooling system didn't reengage when Ripley barely missed the override by a second or two at the most. That's how scary this movie is. That's how scary the alien creatures in this movie are, as well; perhaps especially the adult xenomorph. One should always wish not to potentially ever come-across any of these xenomorph creatures in however many parallel universes there may actually be in nature.

Because you're giving him too much credit. There were other people involved which made this movie great. For example, back then Ridley didn't had complete control. The producers of the film were able to dismiss any nonsense that he came up with. Ridley originally wanted Ellen Ripley to DIE at the end of the film. He wanted the alien to rip her head off. But the producers refused to allow him to do that. And instead we had the ending where Ripley survives.
This scene features some of my favourite camera work from any film ever. The running and shakey pov camera is just so unsettling and disorienting, it perfectly conveys the sheer terror from Ripleys perspective. That intermingled with the fast cuts, ahhhh I love this film so much.
That's how you make a horror movie. No cliché scary music build up when they are alone in a room. It makes you feel lost and alone and never know what's behind the next corner. Now today when something nasty pops up, you often hear a "THUMB!" music sound effect or something.
No Mary Sue like modern times just for the sake of gender, back when things were earned, and Ripley earned that by showing exceptional officer leadership, a high technical skillset in her role, intelligence and logic. Fundamental key traits of success and Ripley had them , hence why I laughed when the Hunger games lady said before her there hadn't been any heroines or female leads, Lmao.. That shows her level of intellect, narcissism and sheer plain ignorance.
Little touches like the self destruct instructions being in both English and French, along with strange buttons on the keyboard labelled "shakti" and "agaric fly" 😅
Governments aren't the only organizations that like to keep secrets. Weyland Yutani probably has plenty of proprietary trade secrets on that ship that they really wouldn't want falling into the hands of any rivals or space pirate organizations. The designs for the ship's reactor alone are probably extremely valuable, and that's to say nothing about the contents of Mother's computer systems. The company isn't exactly portrayed as benevolent, I could definitely see them preferring to destroy a ship rather and kill a bunch of people than letting it get captured by its enemies. Also, they did order their android to consider the crew expendable and kill them if necessary in order to bring the alien back. That's probably highly illegal, and they'd almost assuredly want to be able to keep that under wraps too, even if it meant blowing a ship or two.
@@MultiMMan Probably to scuttle the ship if it couldn't be salvaged for any reason and became a hazard to navigation. This would be common to do in ocean going ships but usually only with a special team and with a lot of advanced planning, especially with sunken vessels. The Navy sends a demo team and they blow up the hulk rather than trying to remove it.
I always took it as this. The self destruct system is also the cooling system for a nuclear plant that powered the ship. There's a procedure to override standard protocols and the cooling rods are lifted to start the meltdown. But it looks like the panel was also an access maintenance panel for the fusion plant maintained by Brett and Parker, which was why Ripley didn't use all of the buttons.

Ripley seems to know the ship's self destruct sequence very well - no need to consult instruction manual etc. Makes me wonder how many company ships she has self-destructed before.
I love that slight pause that the computer’s voice says “3 minutes” really accentuating the importance of the terminating the self destruct rule over all that beeping and noise.
This self-destruct sequence was perfectly done. One would expect it to be as redundant and complicated as it is, given the massive scale, cost, and payload of the vessel. +1 for having a process that looks like it was designed two people to engage the process, hampering any sort of lone-wolf sabotage by a single crew member. If anything, I would have though Ripley would have more difficulty in remembering the elaborate process and accomplishing it so quickly.
Unpopular opinion, i think all ships should have a self destruct sequence to prevent them from falling into enemy hands , of course should only be used as a last resort to prevent capture of a ship

When you saw this movie you fell in love with Ripley because of her character and what she became throughout the entire film through different phases do the film all-in-all she became a hero in the movie

This film is simply perfect. There is not one line, scene, character or actor that I would ever consider changeable. This is peak cinema, and I don't think any other films have come close to beating this. I can watch this film on an endless loop forever and not get tired of it. I still spot details that I have missed when rewatching it.

One of my favourite film scenes. Love the sound effects and alarms which become more multiple and intense as the time counts down. Also the multiple steps to setting it up is quite mesmorising, but it would be no good if you had to do it in a hurry!
1. Unscrew the plate cover 2. Remove cover 3. Pull down mechanical latches with direct cable connection to cooling rods of the ships reactor 4. 2nd access hatch opens 5. Insert screw caps and lift cooling rods 3 thru 6 out of position 6. Press detonation button on side of each column that will cause small nuclear explosion. 7. Run.
Freeze at 0:44. Look at the buttons on the console. Upper right "Fly Agaric" a psychoactive mushroom also the inspiration for the Super power up in Mario. Next to that is the button just labelled "Trip". Left hand side "Lingha" - right hand side -may need to pause at 0:43 - just under the key named BEL is "Yoni" - A Lingha is a symbolic representation of the Hindu god Shiva - depicted as a cylindrical stone or pillar, often resting on a Yoni, or cylindrical base. Centre "Shakti Excess" - Shakti - the Hindu concept of the divine feminine energy - the force behind all creation. Centre - "Pranic Lift" - another Hindu concept, Prana is the life force present in all beings. Enjoy 🙂
Even as a kid, I felt there was something that satisfying in the self destruct mechanism. The switches, the cylinders, the process... like bubble wrap for nerds!
In the game DLC it's five minutes but in the film it's ten minutes but after five minutes Ripley is too late to cancel the self destruct. When she encountered the Alien she snuck back and tried to cancel the self destruct but she's too late because she's passed the five minute window.

This scene features some of my favourite camera work from any film ever. The running and shakey pov camera is just so unsettling and disorienting, it perfectly conveys the sheer terror from Ripleys perspective. That intermingled with the fast cuts, ahhhh I love this film so much.
The way the camera sometimes pans to her side as if getting ready to show the alien helps a lot too.
There are so few movies that I would describe as "perfect." You'd better believe Alien is one of them!
The lady who did MUTHR'S voice was an actress named Helen Horton 😁

If you look real carefully at the "DANGER" sign you can see that the red was colored in with a marker of some sort you can see the marker streaks
I think the entire sign was hand painted.
But it looks very realistic nevertheless.

That's how you make a horror movie. No cliché scary music build up when they are alone in a room. It makes you feel lost and alone and never know what's behind the next corner.
Now today when something nasty pops up, you often hear a "THUMB!" music sound effect or something.
Pure tension.. This woman got massive balls, and showed that courage has no gender!
No Mary Sue like modern times just for the sake of gender, back when things were earned, and Ripley earned that by showing exceptional officer leadership, a high technical skillset in her role, intelligence and logic. Fundamental key traits of success and Ripley had them , hence why I laughed when the Hunger games lady said before her there hadn't been any heroines or female leads, Lmao.. That shows her level of intellect, narcissism and sheer plain ignorance.

Little touches like the self destruct instructions being in both English and French, along with strange buttons on the keyboard labelled "shakti" and "agaric fly" 😅
I think all vehicles should have an emergency destruct sequence. I'm thinking of fitting one to my car just in case it gets hijacked by a xenomorph
Why would a commercial ship have a self destruct system? That’s stupid
Governments aren't the only organizations that like to keep secrets. Weyland Yutani probably has plenty of proprietary trade secrets on that ship that they really wouldn't want falling into the hands of any rivals or space pirate organizations. The designs for the ship's reactor alone are probably extremely valuable, and that's to say nothing about the contents of Mother's computer systems. The company isn't exactly portrayed as benevolent, I could definitely see them preferring to destroy a ship rather and kill a bunch of people than letting it get captured by its enemies.
Also, they did order their android to consider the crew expendable and kill them if necessary in order to bring the alien back. That's probably highly illegal, and they'd almost assuredly want to be able to keep that under wraps too, even if it meant blowing a ship or two.
@@MultiMMan Probably to scuttle the ship if it couldn't be salvaged for any reason and became a hazard to navigation. This would be common to do in ocean going ships but usually only with a special team and with a lot of advanced planning, especially with sunken vessels. The Navy sends a demo team and they blow up the hulk rather than trying to remove it.
I always took it as this. The self destruct system is also the cooling system for a nuclear plant that powered the ship. There's a procedure to override standard protocols and the cooling rods are lifted to start the meltdown. But it looks like the panel was also an access maintenance panel for the fusion plant maintained by Brett and Parker, which was why Ripley didn't use all of the buttons.

Ripley seems to know the ship's self destruct sequence very well - no need to consult instruction manual etc. Makes me wonder how many company ships she has self-destructed before.

I love that slight pause that the computer’s voice says “3 minutes” really accentuating the importance of the terminating the self destruct rule over all that beeping and noise.

This self-destruct sequence was perfectly done. One would expect it to be as redundant and complicated as it is, given the massive scale, cost, and payload of the vessel. +1 for having a process that looks like it was designed two people to engage the process, hampering any sort of lone-wolf sabotage by a single crew member. If anything, I would have though Ripley would have more difficulty in remembering the elaborate process and accomplishing it so quickly.

I wouldn't be surprised if they took inspiration from this. The self destruct voice in Resident Evil sounds like mother.
Unpopular opinion, i think all ships should have a self destruct sequence to prevent them from falling into enemy hands , of course should only be used as a last resort to prevent capture of a ship

This scene brings back memories of late '89 when I used to watch this movie all the time. Haven't seen it at all in the last thirty years.
When you saw this movie you fell in love with Ripley because of her character and what she became throughout the entire film through different phases do the film all-in-all she became a hero in the movie

That klaxon is never ending....even after seeing this. That damn sound will hole up in the recesses of your head. And, it will come up for air when you least expect it...
This film is simply perfect. There is not one line, scene, character or actor that I would ever consider changeable. This is peak cinema, and I don't think any other films have come close to beating this. I can watch this film on an endless loop forever and not get tired of it. I still spot details that I have missed when rewatching it.
God, these props are so beaultiful My minor complaint would be the paint job on the red text, it looks like it was made with a marker.

Does anyone know if this film started the "self-destruct" mechanism that space ships for some reason all have now? I mean you see it in every show and film. Or was this first in star wars, star trek, bsg..or something way earlier, perhaps a 50's film?
I would bet that Star Trek did it first in the 70s although I could be wrong

The Costco self checkout computer voice sounds just like Mother. I’m always reminded of Alien when I check out from there. Lol!
One of my favourite film scenes. Love the sound effects and alarms which become more multiple and intense as the time counts down. Also the multiple steps to setting it up is quite mesmorising, but it would be no good if you had to do it in a hurry!

2. Remove cover
3. Pull down mechanical latches with direct cable connection to cooling rods of the ships reactor
4. 2nd access hatch opens
5. Insert screw caps and lift cooling rods 3 thru 6 out of position
6. Press detonation button on side of each column that will cause small nuclear explosion.
7. Run.

This is the best sequence in all of the Alien Movies, hell, the entirety of the firs move is the best of all of them by far.
Freeze at 0:44. Look at the buttons on the console. Upper right "Fly Agaric" a psychoactive mushroom also the inspiration for the Super power up in Mario. Next to that is the button just labelled "Trip". Left hand side "Lingha" - right hand side -may need to pause at 0:43 - just under the key named BEL is "Yoni" - A Lingha is a symbolic representation of the Hindu god Shiva - depicted as a cylindrical stone or pillar, often resting on a Yoni, or cylindrical base. Centre "Shakti Excess" - Shakti - the Hindu concept of the divine feminine energy - the force behind all creation. Centre - "Pranic Lift" - another Hindu concept, Prana is the life force present in all beings. Enjoy 🙂
Even as a kid, I felt there was something that satisfying in the self destruct mechanism. The switches, the cylinders, the process... like bubble wrap for nerds!

In the game DLC it's five minutes but in the film it's ten minutes but after five minutes Ripley is too late to cancel the self destruct. When she encountered the Alien she snuck back and tried to cancel the self destruct but she's too late because she's passed the five minute window.

And by the way… the detonation timer at 1:23shows the time scale „10:36“… which means the ship won’t detonate in 10 minutes, but in 11😂😂😂
