To be clear, I don't mind the gap, as that is the true 1800 layout - in which I like. It's just the combination of the 1800 layout and low profile design that looked a bit odd to me.
I think it may be a series of him placing the keyboard down, experimenting with what might look the best. If so, we generally only see the one shot he picks from that batch, while this might be the unedited version?
@BettadenuLIVE Thanks for the heads up! They don't mention anything about the feet in the drop. I definitely wouldn't spend $180 on it without an affirmative statement from them that they have changed to the sytem used on the SHIFT. Someone else has already asked the question - I'll follow it and see they respond.
@BettadenuLIVE Will do. I think I'm probably going to hold off either way. Right now it's only being offered with Kaihua BOX White, Speed Silver or no switches and no caps. Not really my preference in switches and its weird they don't offer an option with caps, but no switches...
Regrets that I discovered this video today. I'm looking for a 96% keyboard, thought CTRL was the only keyboard developed by Massdrop and yet here we are, I'm so wrong. Unless I find something else I might go for Iqunix F96. Thanks for the reviews, keep up the good job :)
Given the feature set, they were so close, SO CLOSE to make the perfect enthusiast full size keyboard! But alas no Leopold layout, no high profile :( and That Function row gap ! Ewww! No thanks Sir!
Good news! The latest revision of the keyboard has the Leopold layout. If there’s enough interest, hopefully Drop will release a high profile version; that’s basically my ideal keyboard, given that I rely on the numpad but only use a handful of the nav keys. I’d much rather remap the home, end, page up, and page down keys to a different layer of the arrow keys than devote an entire widget to them.
Is having a keyboard like this a better typing experience that let's say a Razor Blackwidow elite? Also, how should one factor in the longevity of a keyboard? Are they intended to be disposable/consumable items, or can they repaired? With respect to a Drop product, when happens when a few years have passed and something malfunctions or breaks? What recourse does one have?
The gap between the number and function keys looks big because it *is* big. Standard full-size or TKL boards have a gap, sure, but it's not usually *that* big.
The full 1u gap between the function and number rows is absurd. So much wasted space while chasing a shorter layout. The stabs don't rattle nearly as much as my high-profile ALT, though. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the high profile version of the SHIFT, but that gap is still disconcerting.
Have you looked at the Punchy 1800 board. It was also a group buy. I'm looking for an 1800 board like this. Any other alternatives or will I just have to wait for another group buy?
Great review. I was hoping to find one of these, but it looks like they're all sold out. No indication of another production run. For someone who's just getting into premium/custom keyboards, where could one start looking for some good options? I find this fascinating & definitely subscribing. Thanks! Also Loved that this model had a number pad and hot-swap key caps.
indeed they should add keys in that gap, audio media keys anything or maybe move the row down and add caps/ bloq num indicators, or a 4 keys to change profiles to the keyboard, to swap between regular keyboard and macro modes a few USB B pass through, maybe, i don't know something. i love the fact that they fixed the feet. its the closest to perfect keyboard i've seen.
I looked a lot for these more "compact" full feature keyboard designs and in the end decided that good old legacy wyse 50/60 with the switches swapped to pandas or stotles is the way to go for me - most well-built like a tank and economical. the only downside is a very limited and basic diy led design on that old pcb, which basically is getting generic led strips and controlling them with an external usb control.
honestly should have gone with the same layout as the fc980. for such a minimal looking keyboard with no logos or anything anywhere, as well as being low profile, there is way too much space in between the function row and the number row.
UPDATE : They have changed the design of the SHIFT and they have removed 4 nav keys. Now it doesn't have such a big gap between the alphas and the func row, more like the CTRL now
If you only type negative angle is ok but for gaming flat is very ok. All in all flat is the best one :D . Btw where is wireless 65% hotswapable keyboard :D
On their product page the picture no longer has that awkward gap, but I'm wondering if i will use the number pad enough to buy this over the ctrl version. Was also wondering what is the best keycaps to buy for this keyboard. Looking to make a white and red setup that still reveals the rgb lighting.
Why wouldn't they allow for PCB mount switches, I am not a fan of the 1800 layout but this is a deal breaker for me on any hotswap board. What could it possibly cost to have those holes cut out?
Yes I also don't really like exposed switch design. Basicwlly I would prefer if it come with some attachable high top profile case and if you like exposed you could just remove it. Some keyboard manufacturers does that but really not a lot of. I really started to appreaciate not exposed design after I bought anne pro 2 ehich is very classy in my opinion
Interesting keyboard, love the option for negative incline. Wish they didn't have the gaps between the f-keys, as well as the spacing between the main keys, arrows, and numpad. If they didn't have the spaces there this would be a fullish keyboard in the size of a tkl and that would be huge (not in terms of size). I don't personally mind the floating keys as it makes it super easy to clean, just some canned air sprayed across and its good as new basically. Also the space bar sounded like someone smacking a copper pipe against a wall, the other keys sounded fine though.
The fn row and number row gap seriously turns me off. The extra reach to get to fn keys when you're pressing hotkeys like alt+f4 just makes it so much harder. Getting a hexgears gemini, which seems much better value, and without that ugly gap.
after building my first KBD19X custom, and Keycult NO2, i just can't justify the prices on these prebuilt keyboards. which is ironic because i spend like 500 and 800 on those keyboards
Hi which switch makes the less noise halo clear, true or the speed sliver. Sorry I am new to mechanical keyboards looking for something similar to cherry brown switch
@@mmcheddar hey I was planning to get this one but I am not waiting until December when they ship them so the plan is to buy Ctrl which they have cherry brown but is unavailable so my choice now is between switches that I mentioned before thanks for replying
OMG $200! That's a insane price! Do people really pay that much? If it had no switches would it be cheaper? .... They should sell it without switches only. To reduce the price of shipping, stock, and such.
Hey can you make a custom keyboard like painting the body of the HyperX Alloy Elite white so it will be white body and red leds i think it would look clean
It's not really depression gray, still the layout is fucking weird and they could have added another row of keys. It's even good for marketing "More Function Less Space" "only once you diet do you understand the true ability of the body" and more. But I do like the color scheme tho, mild cream white would also be dope.
yep. The only difference between PCB mount and plate mount switches, are the 2 plastic bits that stick out (not the metal pins). So you just snip them off :)
I haven't looked too into it. But the stuff happened, Wei made an apology. Whether it was a legitimate honest mistake, I don't know. Now there's a bunch of fakes out there, which causes complications with aftermarket selling.
@@TaeKeyboards I will say this: it was a good apology. However, the issue is a really big deal, and I have a difficult time putting it down as a simple mistake.
@ 2:57 I hope they hear your advice and do that for a second run or revised version of this keyboard, it would be awesome to have macro keys on a compact keyboard, plus it would remove that gap filling it with something very useful [would look better imo]
To be clear, I don't mind the gap, as that is the true 1800 layout - in which I like. It's just the combination of the 1800 layout and low profile design that looked a bit odd to me.
The beginning of this video drives me nuts. What are you doing going back and forth? LOL

Annoying as hell
"Legends are on another piece of plastic and will never fade away." I wait for this sentence every time he reviews a keyboard with doubleshot caps.
God damn you can lay down and fall asleep in between that number and function row.
This only say the people who don't understand it
🔥🔥🔥
Yeah it's huge a keyboard and that's a lot of wasted space. If only they'd re-do the CTRL and ALT with these feet I'd buy one of those.
@BettadenuLIVE Thanks for the heads up! They don't mention anything about the feet in the drop. Maybe the high profile will come out! They did that with the ALT. But yea, I agree, I wish it was a Leopold layout.
Function row gap is the first thing that I noticed
