    Hello Andy, I have been following your Off-grid-garage channel for a long time. I have also received a lot of good information. After the video about Yixiang DIY battery case, I also ordered 3 of them. They work, although I still have to exchange my Cerbo-S for a Cerbo GX MK2 so that I can integrate and display the JK BMS in the Cerbo GX as you described. So far so good. Now I have seen your video about the firmware update of the JK-BP2A16S20P and wanted to update it via my PC and the JK software. I had the firmware V15.30 and also wanted to upgrade to V15.38. I got this version from your homepage. The update started and stopped at 38%. It didn't go any further. After about 2 hours at 38%, I canceled the update. After several resets, only the display appears and I no longer have access to the BMS. Neither via PC nor via the Bluetooth app from JK.
    My question: Do you have a tip for me on how I can get my JK BMS back? So how I can get access to the BMS again and update the firmware. I have 3 other Yixiang cases with JK BMS that also need a firmware update. But the firmware V15.33 is already available here.
    Thank you for your help - Greetings from good old Germany - Martin

    Many thanks mr. solar. Very helpful, time to update for v. 14.20. I guess it will erase all the settings and you will need to re-type them as well. I was kind of crossfingering that you would have shown your complete settings as well as at least myself have bit troubles to catch somewhat "correct" values, even knowing that each solar system and environment may be different. It's bit of confusing sometimes when on the videos have screen recordings from app showing different setting values. Definitely NOT complaining, maybe just add snapshots to your web page, it would be crazy help for us beginners.
    But huge thanks for everything you do for the community. Best in YT.

    Hello Andy, thanks for the great videos. A “USB to RS485 adapter serial converter interface for Raspberry Pi” can also be used to connect to the BMS. It's cheap. You just have to cut open a LAN cable and connect the wires correctly.

    A couple of thoughts...
    If the BMS only needs battery minus (-) and battery plus (+) in order to flash, this makes it easy to do on the bench with a bench power supply.
    The hardware difference may be something as simple as supply chain issues requiring a second source supplier for a component that requires a slight change in firmware. My company has encountered this the past few years with flash memory, with PMIC, and some other pieces parts. Most of those were footprint compatible, but had slight differences necesary in the firmware to function correctly (or at all in some cases).
    Thanks for documenting this. WHAT A PAIN IT IS!

    Good Morning Andy, would the Victron MK3 to USB cable work. Victron also sell an USB to RS485 interface cable that would need an RJ45 connector plug wired to it. Given I see so many issues surrounding comms for these BMS-inverter/computer connections, have you considered if terminating with the 120 Ohm resistor would reduce comms issues by better matchong the standard Cat5/6 ethernet/LAN cable as per RS485 recommendations?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      That will definitely not work. The MK3 has specific software running and will only talk to Multi or Quattro.

    Hey Andy, I love your channel. I recently purchased a Peter board based on your recommendation. I was getting ready to order a JK BMS for my DIY Battery LiFePO4. Then I saw your video about all the problems people are having with the newer BMSs losing their settings. My battery is going on my boat and it's highly possible that the BMS can be turned off on a regular basis. Given what you've learned about the new JK BMS. What JK BMS would you recommend? I'm setting up an eight cell 24 volt system. With 280 amp hour batteries. I'm really excited to use the Peter board. As soon as I saw that it interfaced with home assistant. I was so excited 🙂 now I can control my boat battery through home assistance when it's sitting in my driveway!

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      You have to differentiate between the old JK (BD series) and new JK BMS (PB series). Only the old style BMS will work with the Peter board. And only the new style BMS had the software issues which are now fixed with the latest FW updates.

    Hi Andy,
    Looking at your inverter bms movies about jk, I get a mixed bag feeling:
    cheap, decent balance current, but with different bugs and a non communicating manufacturer.
    My questions about the newest inverter bmsses:
    - are the battery settings now stored in flash (if even present on the boards)?
    - is it true only the ress versions can be connected with five of them to one cerbo without pushing the others siblings out of the nest?
    It would have been nice if the other active compacter black models that can handle up to
    20 cells were compatible in a group of five with the cerbo. can they?
    Being not so shure if they can, I'll stick to my excisting an regretfully not so accurate and pricy 123smartbms that cost four times the price of the JK ones and need an external current measurement and cirquit breaker too....

You know a way to get out every single cell voltage out of the BMS, in best chase via CAN? In my Case the BMS ist connected via CAN-Hat on the Pi to the Venus OS (latest Version). Is it possible to you to talk to JK to implement that the cell voltages transfer via CAN to the Venus OS? Best regards from Hamburg, Germany. Thomas

    Hello Andy,
    I love your videos and they are very informative.
    I have a 12v system and 2 battery packs, both with the JK BMS B1A8S20P and is it also possible to connect this to a PC and carry out a firmware update?
    I have contacted Jikong BMS several times in different ways by email but unfortunately I have not received a response until today.
    I can't really find any clear or even useful information on the internet.
    I have the right RS485 adapter with USB converter and it also connected to Venus os with a Raspberry Pi4 and it works.
    When I connect this to my computer and press the correct COM port, it connects but with no information or data in the JK-BMS-MONITOR.
    And I have another question, I have a third JK BMS B1A8S20P but I forgot the password. Is there also a way to reset this BMS so that it can be used again and the settings can be changed again?
    Kind regards from Germany

    Thanks Andy for all your hard work in these videos. I enjoy them all, and your humor as well :). I just ordered the JK pb1a16s10p, and fingers crossed. The JK site and support documentation/link/manuals are very hard to find. They have work to do on this! Question, to upgrade the firmware on this unit, do I need the RS485 to USB adaptor, or can I simply use the network cable from the RS485 port on the communication board, and plug right into my network port on the laptop? ( Will the MK3 to USB adaptor work from Victron?) Probably wrong communication protocol with the MK3 adaptor , but just trying to keep it simple... Ideally JK should just have BT firmware downloads we can do right from our phones vs having to connect cables, laptops etc...

    Hello sunny Australia. I’m in need of some help. I have 5 14kw hour lithium iron packs that I want paralleled. I have 5 relay based 300amp Bms by jbd. Do you by chance know a good way for them to connect to each other? I have all voltages in the packs sitting at 52v.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as every pack has its own BMS, you can just parall them. I would suggest to a DC circuit breaker to each of the parallel banks as well.
      Fully charge the whole battery and they will balance against each other once you hit ~54V. Some packs may stop while others will still charge. Totally normal.

  • @davidpenfold
    @davidpenfold ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick question... Do these BMSes have a delayed inverter start to allow pre-charging of the battery inverters' capacitors?
    My REC BMS has a special circuit for this with a relay etc, but doesn't allow you to parallel BMSes without buying an expensive Master BMS (which only allows three slave BMSes, limiting the overall capacity). So if I can get a decent alternative that can parallel using the Pylontech/SMA protocol with capacitor pre-charging I'd be very happy to try them instead.

    • @dougle03
      @dougle03 ปีที่แล้ว

      Power up is not something I do very often, so I have a large resistor that I can switch into circuit for 2 mins before turning on the main battery breaker. It's inverter designers that should implement this rather than BMS manufacturers..

      @@dougle03 I agree that it should be part of the inverter, but I won't be throwing out my two Sunny Islands just because of that!
      Yeah, I've bought a couple of resistors too. The REC BMS's delay contraption doesn't seem to wait long enough to sufficiently pre-charge the two SIs anyway, so I guess it's a bit moot as I'd need to use the resistor anyway.

    I've been following your channel for a long time and was very impressed with the introduction of the JK-BMS.
    Of course, I quickly bought one in the hope that it would work with my system, especially since the 2A balancer completely convinced me.
    I don't know if I understood correctly that you were or are involved in the development, but in any case I'm eagerly waiting for a firmware update that supports my system because it works perfectly with Seplos-BMS.
    It's about the interaction of JK_PB2A16S20P (vers. 15.17) with an SMA battery inverter_Sunny Island
    At Seplos the protocol is called: SMA_CAN or Sofar_Can protocol
    Do you perhaps have any influence on the developers so that this is implemented in a next FW update?

    Is deze verandering normaal? Of heb ik een verkeerde firmware update uitgevoerd?
    Kan iemand mij hier duidelijkheid overgeven?
    Ben benieuwd of ik nu iets fout heb gedaan of niet,

    Anyone that has manage to update the firmware with something else than a RS-485 adapter?
    Seen some people having trouble with finding the correct RS-485 adapter, and I was wondering if there was another way to update the firmware using for example RS-232 or TTL? And if needed connected to another location on the BMS? Maybe on the ARM32 pinout?

      Its funny you should mention this, as its not the only problem I am having, my laptop running win10 has the prolific serial to usb chip, if you look in device manager MS says that the firmware has been stopped since 2012, only 12 years ago, so I am trying older firmware to try and get it connecting

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      RS232 does not work correctly with the new JK inverter BMS. JK advised to use RS485 only.

    • @john-arvidkibsgard616
      @john-arvidkibsgard616 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that makes it more interesting, since I have seen some people comment that they have been able to use an RS232 adapter on the RS485 port succesfully. And more people comment that the RS485 adapter they used did not work. Saw one comment where a store selling the JK inverter BMS recommended to only use one specific RS485 adapter (which they did't directly sell either).

    Still no go on connecting to PC as per video, I am using a
    Bewinner Industrial Grade USB to RS485/422 from Amazon, I have tried a
    Cable Matters USB to Serial Adapter Cable 0.9m USB to RS232, USB to DB9 using the RS-232 port with no luck, I also used a RS485 serial USB toggle without success, I have now ordered from Ali what is supposed to be the right cable, I don't think all USB to RS-485 RJ45 are wired the same, be so much easier to do it with a phone APP, so at this stage I am waiting for delivery from Aliexpress, Been a real pain in the arse

      I have spent 2 nights trying to get this fixed, I too am using the usb to RS485 from amazon, I tried win7 serial drivers and they didnt work for me, I have now loaded a prolific driver from 2008, still not perfect tho, so no fix yet

    • @sjdtmv
      @sjdtmv ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some older prolific drivers come up with an error under later windows OS, I have found this being the case with my Zhetech battery tester, but is easy to work around with drivers under Device Manager, I think the problem lies with hardware on the termination of the RJ45, until the new adapter comes from Aliexpress I can't be 100%, but I think it is the plug end.

    You might want to include the full firmware version in the download file name.

    Here's a partial conversation thread from my interaction with a sales rep.
    Sales Rep-1.Disconnect the host.
    2.Select Force update from PC software. (Need authorization code, I will provide you)
    3.Press the activation button without releasing it.
    4.Press the reset button and release it quickly. You will see the PC software and start the firmware update.
    5.If this fails, repeat the preceding steps...
    Me-When you say disconnect the host, do you mean pull the wire out between BMS & PC, or push the disconnect button in the App?
    Sales Rep-First button...Do you follow this step? (she sent me a PDF to upgrade fireware).
    Me-The BMS has the latest firmware installed (see my earlier picture above), I just want to be able to change my settings... this should not be so difficult!.
    Sales Rep-We do not recommend that you modify the parameters yourself.
    Me-I have to modify them, they come with the wrong settings out of the box.
    Sales Rep-Yes, you need to use rj45 wiring to brush the computer.
    Me-Brush the computer? what does that mean?
