Entering your initials usually saves it. I am hearing that some people say that doesn't save it on newer versions of the cabinet, but I haven't been able to confirm that.
Yeah you can’t enter initials or unlock the hidden characters in this menu. You’d have to use the EJB menu. But you can set your difficulty and volume, exit the menu and then play a two player game repeatedly until you get 10 wins. Then go into the regular mode and die, you’ll be able to enter your initials which typically triggers a saving of all the settings at that point.

No, unfortunately. Although, the only other cabinet I've had was Street Fighter 2 but I quickly modded that into a Killer Instinct so I really didn't get a lot of time with them. I will also say I didn't find this myself, I saw it mentioned with poorly explained instructions so I had to kind of figure out exactly how to do it myself. But I won't take credit for finding this one lol.
The option to enter your initials were only available in the EJB menu. I made this video primarily for those who couldn't pull off the quick button combination to get into that menu. The EJB menu trick goes: EJB Menu>CPU Board Test (to force the game to enter the regular test menu)>Change difficulty/volume>exit>EJB menu>enter initials and everything is saved. This video is a quicker and easier way into the test menu for those who can't access the EJB menu, but to make it save they have to play the game right after to enter their initials. Hopefully this wasn't a huge confusing mess of a reply lol.
You can use the EJB menu method. Or try this Costco method: th-cam.com/video/bSzI86TYnR0/w-d-xo.html Its basically the same as this video just at a different time. I've been told the Costco cabinet saves the settings automatically too.
You can still get a broken cabinet with this. From what I know, the problem is actually from you entering your initials. It triggers something in the ROM to save and that must cause the problem. Newer MK cabinets don't typically have this problem.
I had to do the way you had the newer cabs you mention above, I didn't save my initials so I think id be happier doijg this and having to do again every time I need it. I'll just make sure I don't win 8 In a row 😂
It's ALL about closing the game - First cabinet I closed it right away and my MK2 bricked, second cabinet I adjusted everything EXACTLY like the video and went slow....everything was adjusted and working fine.
Yup. From what ive seen the game seems to brick when people just shut the machine off without holding P1 and going back to the main menu screen first. I have one of these and went into the arcade / EJB menu and entered initials multiple times and havent had any problems
I don’t think that’s possible on the arcade version. They do make hacked versions of these ROMs but You’d have to mod it with a PC and hope that’s an option.
Didn't they give you the option to change the difficulty on that cabinet? If not, you can always do this: th-cam.com/video/hDkTuocJ8_U/w-d-xo.html Its more difficult but should work no matter what Arcade1Up does. I'm not certain how the cabinet will react to that so do it at your own risk.
I just want to turn down the volume for umk3! It’s so loud and distorted I can barely tolerate it and usually just resort to turning off the volume altogether! I don’t want to brick anything though!!!
I cannot get this to work on my legacy cabinet. I can get the EJB menu to work, takes me 43 tries but it works, but this does work. Did they remove this feature in later versions or something. The menus look a lot different in the legacy version.
Anyone else notice that the difficulty level doesn’t really change in MK1 and MK2? Especially, MK2. I put it on the easiest mode and the CP was doing more specials and was way more aggressive. I’m no MK slouch either...
MK2 (and UMK3 IMO) are brutal. They're pure quarter eating machines. I'm sure they knew they had a massive hit that would bring in millions of dollars so they designed the difficulty to ramp up the farther in you got. It especially gets harder after you put together a few wins in a row. After a certain number of continues in a row, the game backs down noticeably and lets you win again for a fight or two. I don't remember it being so obvious back in the arcade though. Its funny how its more noticeable when you're not enter coins lol.
@@KillerArcadeGames what about the home console ports they didnt require earing money and the ai cheats way worse you hit them and they hit you theres no way
I've been told by another commenter that this doesn't work if you bought your MK cabinet at Costco. However, they said it DOES work if you try the button/joystick combo while the game is on the attract mode. I can't confirm it since my Costco never got any of these.
Edit: I was wrong about how to do it. Here's the comment and their instructions on how to do it on the Costco version: "This does work on the Costco Mortal Kombat Bundle. Perform the same button combinations while in game and then use the Player 2 reset feature by holding down the button until the ROM resets. This will then launch you into the test menus. Enjoy!" If it works, please let me know!
They were meant for the real arcade games. I assume to make sure the monitors were properly displaying the colors, adjust the screen size and all that.
Killer Arcade Games that one worked!! Thank you. Now I wish the Street Fighter one had a way to change the difficulty setting. I don’t remember having this much trouble beating the arcade game before. I think the crappy joysticks have a lot to do with it. Ordered some Sanwas to replace them so hopefully I’ll be playing better soon.
Yea..the difference is slight. The bottom line is the game was designed to take your money. These cabinets have no idea that they're for home use and they're still making sure you lose at some point. I'm working on a video to show some tips on how to beat the AI but there's no 100% fool proof way to beat this game that I've found. I was able to beat it on Medium difficulty with only 2 continues the other day.

If this works on the Mame version of MK2 I have installed on my phone it would be very useful because the volume level is way too low on that particular Rom.
For some reason, MK2 and UMK3 require you to put your initials in before anything saves. I'd suggest booting up the game, set your settings, then play on two player mode for around 10 wins in a row and let the CPU character beat you after that. You can enter your initials then and the settings should save.
There’s only a small number of originally produced 1Ups that this will work on. It’s a hidden code they put into the games and removed it soon after it was found. The EJB menu trick will work on your cabinet but it’s more difficult.
hello I just discovered your channel today I like the content, I have a used Mortal kombat arcade 1up, I love it but I try to access the menus and it does not work, all the buttons work but I do not know if there is anything else to do, if you could me help I would appreciate it very much
Try this video: th-cam.com/video/bSzI86TYnR0/w-d-xo.html They updated these cabinets and changed it a bit. If you have the Legacy cabinet, it won't work, they must have removed this option.
What is the best way to unlock the hidden characters and keep them? Is it still through the EJB menu or?... because if so idk if I want to... I don’t wanna break my machine
I think the EJB menu is the fastest way to do it. I don't believe the EJB menu actually causes the game to brick. I purposely tried to brick my game before I chose to mod it. I went through almost everything in the EJB menus and it didn't do a thing to my Arcade1Up hardware. (Video here: th-cam.com/video/pbJo_p0VKf0/w-d-xo.html) It seems that entering your initials is what caused most of the brickings. It could just be a timing situation. A lot of people would enter their initials and turn off the machine to reboot and see if it saved. I would wait at least 20-30 seconds and then hold the start button to exit the emulation back to the game select menu. Then go back in to see if it saved. The theory is the game is writing your initials and saving the settings for a period after you enter them, so by turning off the game it interrupts the save process and corrupts a file that causes the game to fail. This is 100% speculation though. If you do it and your's fails, I would tell Arcade1Up what you did. They haven't denied anyone a replacement as far as I know, I'd just rather avoid telling them you were digging around in the settings.
@@xsXRevanXsx I can tell you the difficulty change doesn't make a huge difference, the game is still difficult after you win a few matches in a row. You could enter the codes to unlock the characters and then just be sure to enter your initials by playing two player games over and over to make it save. You just have to do it before rebooting the game. It's a gamble but no matter what I did, my game never bricked. I was in the EJB menus at least 20 times per arcade and never had an issue. I had to go into them so many times while preparing/recording these videos.
You'd have to play the game normally, then enter the unlock codes for each character after the continue timer runs out. (You can see them done here: th-cam.com/video/0LcAw6-HWGI/w-d-xo.html) But with Arcade1Up, it won't save until you enter your initials. That's when you need to play two player games, keep beating the second player to rack up wins, once you have 8-10 wins in a row, you can lose and then the game will ask you to enter your initials. That will save those unlocked characters.
@@gradytaylor6115 got mine to work. Have to hold up, on player two then hold run and block on player one and hold the player two button down. That is how I got mine to work. Just can not get the hidden characters unlocked

I know I’m super late but I just got my 1st arcade 1up today and it’s the initial release 3 in 1 MK cab. It looks like you have the same one except your screen looks crazy good! It almost has a curved look to it in the video and it just looks extra crisp. Did you mod it or is this the original screen? Thanks for any info😄👍 Can’t get this trick to work for some reason though🤔 is it because I’ve already accessed the EJB menu before with the other method🤷♂️
So this is what i did to save everything on umk3 not using ejb menu and instead using the test menu shown in this video. I entered code in this video to enter test menu. Change difficulty and adjust volume. Then exit test menu and it starts umk3. Then i entered the 3 ultimate combat codes in game for 3 secret characters. Then i played only 5 matches of 2 player kombat winning all as first player, after timer went down to zero it asked me to enter initials before i chose a single player ladder. Everything is saved now.
This won't, they changed/removed the code. The Legacy cab also doesn't save any of the settings when you change them so its almost pointless to try unfortunately.
It will disable the three hidden characters that are behind the dragon logos on the character select screen. If you’ve never unlocked them, that option essentially does nothing. You can enable them by entering the EJB menu. Here’s instructions on how to enter that menu: th-cam.com/video/hDkTuocJ8_U/w-d-xo.html
I did that, I changed it to very easy, played six or seven wins in a row on two player, put in my initials, let the computer beat me, it still says very easy, but it's not fighting me very easy it still fighting me hard? Why is it still saying very easy? And fighting me at the medium setting still?
Cool thanks! I actually want mortal kombat 1 artwork and want an mk3 1up cab w art. I wpuld like to add two speakers to this with bass. Is that difficult?
Changing out the speakers and adding a subwoofer with the stock set up is going to be tough if it’s possible at all. When I modded my SF2 cabinet into a Killer Instinct, I put a Logitech PC speaker/subwoofer set up inside. It sounds a lot better! I didn’t use the stock speaker at all. Again, you’ll have to basically remove all of the A1U hardware to do it. Everything in the A1U runs from a board which controls the game and monitor, then that ribbon cable runs to it to connect the controllers and speaker. It’s pretty limited as far as modding the stock stuff goes. That’s why I just gut out the cabinet and replace the buttons/sticks, audio and put PCs in them. My video will show detailed instructions on how to do this if you’re interested. It’s not coming this week but hopefully by next Friday I’ll have it edited and ready.
It would be nice if we could access the Arcade1Up Galaga and Galaxian menus in order to get rid of the phantom extra credit that prevents either game from ever re-entering attract mode after being played.
This does work on the Costco Mortal Kombat Bundle. Perform the same button combinations while in game and then use the Player 2 reset feature by holding down the button until the ROM resets. This will then launch you into the test menus. Enjoy!
@@KillerArcadeGames thanks for the response. So after I set it to very easy and exit the settings menu and start to play there is no change the ai is still brutal and when I use the button command to go back to the main screen and enter the settings menu again the difficulty is back on medium. And I'm never actually turning the cabinet off at anytime while doing this.
I didn't because I had already done the EJB menu on MK2 and UMK3. But, on MK1, it saved without entering my initials. It seems to be working that way for most people.
Last I've heard, the only way to ever access anything like that is to solder a USB port to the board so you can plug in a keyboard. I ended up just modding mine into a MAME cabinet, it looks so much better.
Modding Arcade1Up there has to be a button combination to get into the menu without having to solder a usb no? I got a raspberry pie and got some more stuff ordered I think I’m going that way too.
Considering t hat these things run a modified version of Mame code, I'm surprised Dip setting are such a faff to modify and save. In Mame, they save to a small file in the Nvram folder. BTW, nothing you're suggesting should break anything.
Yea, I went through and tried to break the game by messing with all of the menus on a video. It never broke. I firmly believe this is related to problems with A1U's OS or some are just defective and would break after someone enters their initials.
I try this more than 50 times is not working and i have the very same machine . Is anybody else having trouble ? Please help. It is impossible to beat the game if not in easy mode.
It’s possible you have the newer version where they removed this option. This hidden menu code was made by A1U so once the info got out, they removed it from future manufacturing.
You probably have either the Costco version or one of the new hardware versions from Walmart, try this video, its the same thing just different timing: th-cam.com/video/bSzI86TYnR0/w-d-xo.html
I really wanna tweak the difficulty and volume on MK2 & UMK3. I'm nervous about bricking my machine though. So I didn't mess around with the EJB menus. I wonder if this method is safer ?
Its really hard to say. We don't know exactly what is causing the bricking. The thought is its related to saving information to the ROM. Most people's brick after saving their initials in the EJB menu. I have been told one bricked after entering their initials by just playing the game normally. I can tell you this, I've done everything I can think of to try and break my game. I know it sounds crazy but I am modding it anyway so I'll have no use for the hardware. I've played with tons of settings, I've been into the EJB menus at least 20 times by now on all games. The closest I've come to a problem was on MK1. I entered my initials on the EJB menu and when the game loaded, it showed there were no entries in the winning streaks screen. It was just blank. I went back in and entered my initials again and it started working again. Its very strange. Changing the difficulty doesn't really make the game that much easier. If you're worried, I'd say don't bother with it.
Still think I would like to adjust the volume because UMK3 IS LOUD!!!! I've also heard changing the difficulty doesn't make a huge difference but I was able to beat MK1 on default and I also to my surprise made it to Shao Kahn on UMK3... before I gave up. I'm hoping that lowering the difficulty may make Kahn a little less RUTHLESS. And damn a case were someone's machine bricked just by entering their initials normally ? 😨
Okay so I haven't screwed with going into the EJB menus at all. But I finally decided to try this new method in the video and I accessed the test menus for all 3 games. I changed the difficulty on MK1. And I lowered the volume on MK2 & UMK3 and figured since I was already in the menus I'd lower the difficulty for both those games as well. I then went on a little win streak in 2 player in both MK2 & UMK3 then input my initials to save. After inputting my initials I waited for the game over screen and then did a few more matches vs the cpu before quitting out. And knock on wood but nothing bad has happened to my machine as of yet! I don't plan on going back into these menus, i just wanted to tweak what I wanted to change and got out fast. I didn't mess around like some people might have in these menus or in the EJB menu. Thanks !! Because I was finally able to beat SHAO KAHN ON UMK3 !! From the looks of how many likes this video has gotten I'd like to think this method is safer and has less of a chance of bricking your machine, but like you said who really knows ?? =\
No, at least not in their factory state. I just finished removing all of the A1U parts and installing a PC inside running MAME. Now I can add just about any game that uses that button layout or something similar.
You have to do it slightly differently in that one. Check this video out Change the difficulty & volume on the Costco Mortal Kombat Arcade1Up Cabinet th-cam.com/video/bSzI86TYnR0/w-d-xo.html

No. The Legacy edition doesn’t have this code. You can do the EJB method but it won’t save and resets any changes every time you launch the game again. It’s quite frustrating.
This DOES work on the COSTCO Mortal Kombat Bundle!!! Perform the same button combinations while in game and then use the Player 2 reset feature by holding down the button until the ROM resets. This will then launch you into the test menus. Enjoy!
Michael Miccio Could you explain this again please? “Perform same button combos while in game”- does that mean on the same screen as he shows in the video (after game is selected but before it is launched)? What is the player 2 reset feature? Does that show up after you’ve performed this button combo? Forgive my lack of understanding. I have the Costco version and having trouble getting this menu to launch.

Yup. From what ive seen the game seems to brick when people just shut the machine off without holding P1 and going back to the main menu screen first. I have one of these and went into the arcade / EJB menu and entered initials multiple times and havent had any problems
Is it a way you could get longer fatalities time
I don’t think that’s possible on the arcade version. They do make hacked versions of these ROMs but You’d have to mod it with a PC and hope that’s an option.
What about for other Gen 1 cabinets? Any secret menus?
I don't think any other secret menus have been found. I'm not sure if they exist or if this one was just special.
Nice man thanks
No problem 👍
Doesn't work on the newer legscy 12 in one cabinet, is thete a different way?
Didn't they give you the option to change the difficulty on that cabinet? If not, you can always do this: th-cam.com/video/hDkTuocJ8_U/w-d-xo.html Its more difficult but should work no matter what Arcade1Up does. I'm not certain how the cabinet will react to that so do it at your own risk.
I just want to turn down the volume for umk3! It’s so loud and distorted I can barely tolerate it and usually just resort to turning off the volume altogether! I don’t want to brick anything though!!!
I get that, its a risk. I did make a video of me trying to brick my cabinet, I went through all the options and nothing happened to mine.
Any updates on if it's safe or not?
This is awesome. Thank you.
Happy to help!
I cannot get this to work on my legacy cabinet. I can get the EJB menu to work, takes me 43 tries but it works, but this does work. Did they remove this feature in later versions or something. The menus look a lot different in the legacy version.
This won't work on legacy cabinets. This method was something A1U hid in their emulation but EJB can't be removed since its in the game's code.
@@KillerArcadeGames thank you so much for the clarification, I've been trying to find confirmation on this for so long 😅
Anyone else notice that the difficulty level doesn’t really change in MK1 and MK2?
@@KillerArcadeGames what about the home console ports they didnt require earing money and the ai cheats way worse you hit them and they hit you theres no way
cant you just put your initials in while your in test menu and it will save??
So if we have the Costco bundle there's nothing we can do........yet?
What's the monitor patterns in the test menu. Can I put scale line in the game. I have the cabinet as well I find it a little more pixeled.
They were meant for the real arcade games. I assume to make sure the monitors were properly displaying the colors, adjust the screen size and all that.
I have a walmart model and it just starts the game any help???
Your's may be a new hardware model, try this video. It's basically the same, just different timing: th-cam.com/video/bSzI86TYnR0/w-d-xo.html
Will it work on Walmart brand
If it’s a newer Walmart cabinet, it’s not going to work. This really only worked on the original MK2 cabinets.
The MK1 code isn’t working on my machine.
Hmm...maybe try this video th-cam.com/video/bSzI86TYnR0/w-d-xo.html
Killer Arcade Games that one worked!! Thank you. Now I wish the Street Fighter one had a way to change the difficulty setting. I don’t remember having this much trouble beating the arcade game before. I think the crappy joysticks have a lot to do with it. Ordered some Sanwas to replace them so hopefully I’ll be playing better soon.
Nice..... thanks
I don't see any difference after changing the difficulty settings.

@@KillerArcadeGames its still under warranty. it was working fine, then i turned it off for the night and then back on the next day and nothing. i was told it could be the pcba board. ordered a replacement. hopefully it helps
If this works on the Mame version of MK2 I have installed on my phone it would be very useful because the volume level is way too low on that particular Rom.
I can tell you now it won’t work. This was specific to the emulator for this version of the Arcade1Up
Got a question to ask why it doesn't save it once you restart the it only saves only MK
For some reason, MK2 and UMK3 require you to put your initials in before anything saves. I'd suggest booting up the game, set your settings, then play on two player mode for around 10 wins in a row and let the CPU character beat you after that. You can enter your initials then and the settings should save.
Ive tried this method for 3 days it doesnt work on my MK Arcade1up
There’s only a small number of originally produced 1Ups that this will work on. It’s a hidden code they put into the games and removed it soon after it was found. The EJB menu trick will work on your cabinet but it’s more difficult.
@KillerArcadeGames ahhh i didn't know that Thank You so Much I tried the EBJ code and it worked but man it's Tough 😅
hello I just discovered your channel today I like the content, I have a used Mortal kombat arcade 1up, I love it but I try to access the menus and it does not work, all the buttons work but I do not know if there is anything else to do, if you could me help I would appreciate it very much
I got it eventually but you just gotta be quick
The only thing is I'm having trouble saving it so I have to do it over each time to play the hidden character
@Killer Arcade Games well the only thing I just want is to have the characters unlocked and saved. And the AI difficulty lowered.
@Killer Arcade Games wait how does that work with the 2nd player and unlocking the characters?
You'd have to play the game normally, then enter the unlock codes for each character after the continue timer runs out. (You can see them done here: th-cam.com/video/0LcAw6-HWGI/w-d-xo.html) But with Arcade1Up, it won't save until you enter your initials. That's when you need to play two player games, keep beating the second player to rack up wins, once you have 8-10 wins in a row, you can lose and then the game will ask you to enter your initials. That will save those unlocked characters.
Gonna be modding my machine anyways so once i get to it im gonna mess with it so much n see if it even corrupts
I did the same thing! I couldn't break mine th-cam.com/video/pbJo_p0VKf0/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for any info😄👍

Still no idea why this won’t work for me🤔
Anyone have an idea?
So this is what i did to save everything on umk3 not using ejb menu and instead using the test menu shown in this video. I entered code in this video to enter test menu. Change difficulty and adjust volume. Then exit test menu and it starts umk3. Then i entered the 3 ultimate combat codes in game for 3 secret characters. Then i played only 5 matches of 2 player kombat winning all as first player, after timer went down to zero it asked me to enter initials before i chose a single player ladder. Everything is saved now.

I used this video for putting in the 3 codes in game th-cam.com/video/0LcAw6-HWGI/w-d-xo.html
I have the Midway legacy collection with MK 1, 2, and ult 3 will it work for that?
This won't, they changed/removed the code. The Legacy cab also doesn't save any of the settings when you change them so its almost pointless to try unfortunately.
I've tried this 20 times. Does not work! Anyone know why?!

@@KillerArcadeGames YES this was it! I didn't buy from Costco but the Costco trick FINALLY WORKED!
What exactly is "DISAABLE HIDDEN CHARACTERS"? I press a button when it's highlighted and the menu just exits and nothing is changed

Are you planning to mod your mk 1up?
I am. The plan is to record the process in more detail this time and put out either a multi-part video or one big video showing it all.

This method for some reason does not work for me at all . The codes worked but not this 😒 maybe it's model/version specific?

@@JPToys97 ive used this new method and i'm fine, have not been able to get ejb mode
but i want too so bad
Can you add games to these?
No, at least not in their factory state. I just finished removing all of the A1U parts and installing a PC inside running MAME. Now I can add just about any game that uses that button layout or something similar.
Will this work with my Marvel Arcade 1up Cab? Difficult settings trick?
It's unlikely. But, there could be similar codes for the other cabinets that haven't been discovered yet.
This didn’t help me

No. The Legacy edition doesn’t have this code. You can do the EJB method but it won’t save and resets any changes every time you launch the game again. It’s quite frustrating.
to save the ejb settings, you need to do the ejb, go into the game and when it starts again you need to do the code again to enter your initials.
