I agree with pretty much everything in this video. I can't remember a time when Roland priced it's kits so well. The TD17 line is way better than the competition. It was great meeting you too at the event :D
Clearly meant to undercut the Strike (non-pro) and it does so wonderfully. If they'd just got positional sensing on the snare I would have probably bought one (same reason I am not getting an alesis strike). My VST (superior drummer 3) has 3 zones snare position, and I want to use it!! :P
TD-10 does it too I believe, and due to it's age and somewhat dated sounds can be had a bit cheaper than a td-12 or td-20 (still 2k to 3k every time one pops up). I know I wouldn't be able to split the tom inputs because of piezo/switch, but I'm not super worried about that. One thing I was curious about is if I could add a second 3 zone ride to a TD-10 module (or TD-20 for that matter if I found the right deal). Don't think I can just use 2 spare inputs for it, but I could have swore I've seen it on a roland kit before, but maybe they were using 2 modules and I just didn't notice. Thanks for the response and the informative videos (you and Justin :) )
I have the TD17 KVX for 2 days now... have been playing on it for at least 10h since... Just love it... I'm not a e-drum reviewer but that beauty is the best for its price without a doubt !
Thanks! This was a great review! I'm converting a set to electronic now. Was holding off on buying a drum module until the right one caught my attention. I have been going back and forth between 3 or 4 but, the more videos I watch, the more I am leaning towards this module. It just seems like such a deal for 600 bucks.
How did you find it? I’m thinking about getting the KV as well as a CY13. I used to have a td9 and didn’t mind the hi hat, and space is at a premium. Cheers
@@nic.e The ride is finicky. You have to hit the bell just right to get it to do the bell sound. Otherwise you just get the normal sound. Once you get used to it, it's easier to get it right consistently. Kick pad is good, and high hat worked fine for me right out of the box, but it was probably calibrated by the store/former owner. (Bought used from a second hand shop.) That said, placing the high hat stand becomes an issue with a double kick pedal and limited space on the 120cm x 130 cm mat, which I got and put on top of a 120 x 120 foam and rubber mat to reduce noise to neighboring apts. It's always gonna be a compromise. Tom and snare pads feel fine, but can be tricky to place due to the limits of the hardware. Same goes for the module. It really needs a better mount to give you more options. As for the cymbals, I got the old style hardware with metal booms, which work fine, but I have no idea about the newer version of the rack. Downside on the module is there's only one regular midi port, and it can't read 24 bit or 48khz wav so you can't just use raw tracks from a recording session to play along with. Gotta bounce to 16 bit 44.1. I tested the sample feature, but haven't had time to trim my own samples. Gotta cut off any empty space at the beginning to prevent delay on triggering. But it worked, so the option is there. Not really impressed with the stock sounds, but there are some fun ones in there.
I’ve been a drummer for 16 years. I learned on a Roland TD9. I’ve had my acoustic for these 16 years, but haven’t been able to buy an e-kit until now. I’m undecided about the TD17KVX vs the DTX 8.
The 6 to 3.5mm adapter is important.. I leave those in the jack of amps and stuff so I only wear up the cable from the headphone (wich is replaceble) instead of the actual jack port from all the plug\unplug !
You're "best feature," the 3.5 headphone jack had me cursing last night when I opened/setup this kit! My nice expensive studio headphones use 1/4" as god intended!
This is by far the best review of the TD-17 line on TH-cam right now. I work at a music store in Canada called Long & McQuade Music and I just traded in all of my drum hardware, TD-9 brain and triggers for the TD-17KVX. I have been waiting YEARS to make a "EZ-Drummer stand alone" brain. The time is now! Thanks for this video. Really good content. I will share with every customer I talk too who is interested in this line.
Jim Cheseborough usually you have to have a laptop hooked up to your brain to play ezdrummer and superior drummer samples. This new kit allows you to load in your favorite toontrack sounds or kits from the SD card eliminating the use for the computer. Very slick

How could we share our perfect sample layers with friends that also have a td-17. Is it some “bank file” that we can send over the Internet? 3. Did Roland give u a free td-17 or a discount ? Thanks!!
Ok. I found out the samples are "one-shot" not multi-layered like 2box. This means the samples sound exactly the same (besides volume changes) regardless of how you hit the surface!! This is inferior because 2box can have a totally different (let's say) snare sound at soft hits vs hard hits.
Jim Cheseborough I agree, the sample feature is better on the drumit3 in this case and it has also 4 audio outs. But the triggering is never as good as with the TD-17, especially in terms of hi-hat. I heard that people can’t get the VH-11 to work without an adapter.

I have the vh10 and I have issues reliably opening and closing, when I choke the hit hats it didn’t open and close accurately, like when doing a dance beat. I’ve tried the collab tools from the module. Could it be my hi hat stand? It’s a cheap one.

Other than sam ash massively screwing up my order twice and dealing with horrible customer service(first problem with them ever to be fair), I absolutely could not be any happier with my td17kvx. Hopefully they last me a very long time. Best e-snare and bass drum I've ever played.
The best about the any of the TD17 modules is that we can program each velocity of the pads on logarithmic curves instead of linear or exponential. The sensation is like an accoustic. Im blaffled
Thanks for an excellent overview of the new range. Can you tell me what is the purpose is of that inner plastic rim on the pads.. Its not found in the upper range tom pads. Thanks.
yep, great review, Alesis Strike Pro was a close contender but in the end, the build quality was just too shitty. Just one play of the TD-17 and the natural responsiveness wins you over. ...still not 100% sold on the snare sounds though but working on it and I use 'Addictive Drums' as a sound source. thanks for the helpful review. C
I’ve bought a TD11 couple a months ago. I feel angry to be honest. Damn.... I’m pretty sure if I go now and buy a TD17 they will announce the new TD17,5 KVTDKHYR
The cycle for Roland to release a new set is usually 4-5 years. The Td-17 was overdue. But I understand your frustration. However, the TD-11 is not so bad after all.
Vdrum Tips hey bro... Tks for answering. Anyway, according to my skills a Simmons SDS5 would be more than enough LOL. Really appreciate your videos. Tks for helping us in so many ways.
I have a TD-9KX2 with the VH-11 HH and additional crash and cowbell. I am considering replacing the TD-9 module with the TD-17 module (leaving all current pads). Good idea or not? Thanks
Being new to e-drum, I was looking to purchasing either Superior Drummer 3 or Steven Slate. My only concern/question would be; is there any way to use SD3 software to build the sample sound set you want to play THEN download that sample from the software to the Roland 17 module, in order to have installed within one of the user's preset on the Roland? This way you have it at your finger tips and don't have to lug around a computer all the time when playing out. Also if using either software can you get "position sensoring" even though the Roland module doesn't support it on their tracks?
good td17 review ... one on the best so far ...I'm almost most ready to buy ..or maybe I'll wait till summer NAMM and see what the competition brings out to counter roland ...and they better do it soon and they better do it well or roland will sell so many of these there won't be any body looking for something else at this price point.
neonrust Maybe waiting makes sense, but I bet the competition is not ready to release something better. The competition was not expecting this. The thing is that almost all competitors do still struggle with the hi-hat, even the more expensive sets have this problem.
yeah...the new hi hat is going be hard to compete with ...of course td 17 won't really be in the supply line until end of june....july(maybe) and Namm will be at that same time so I won't pre order the td17 and wait see if there is another genie in the e-drum bottle.
Annie Panda Hi! I'm thinking about to buy the kvx type. Is it a good choice? Or can you suggest maybe a better buy? And I'm thinking about to buy a double pedal as well. Iron cobra HP900PWN or HP900RWN or Pearl Eliminator P-2052C? Ty for your answer.
if the td17 kv version had the cy13r, it would make that kit so much more valuable. The kit in itself is very nice, only downsides are the cymbals. I can live with the cy8 crash, the cy5 hihat is okay since that kit is cheaper than the kvx, but the ride needs to be upgraded.
Side note if you are a metal player you don't need positional sensing on the snare so if you are looking at the td25 vs td17 and you play metal i would say go for the td17. Thats just my 2 cents.
demonocus metalocus I read a comment on another video saying that if you hit the pads hard on the td-17 then you have to readjust them after playing a couple hard hitting songs. Is this true?
I am upgrading from a TD-9KX2 module to a TD-17. My snare is currently a PD-105. What's your advice on changing the PD-105 to PDX-12 snare and moving the PD-105 to floor tom?

Well, that is the distributor in this case. I think it will last for ages.:) Enjoy your set!
Thanks for the video! It was extremely helpful!!
Thanks.
To make the pad bigger.
yep, great review, Alesis Strike Pro was a close contender but in the end, the build quality was just too shitty. Just one play of the TD-17 and the natural responsiveness wins you over. ...still not 100% sold on the snare sounds though but working on it and I use 'Addictive Drums' as a sound source. thanks for the helpful review. C
Is it worth the upgrade from KV to KVX for the hi hat?
The so far best Modul for the Price…💪🏼💪🏼
Well done! As always, thanks for the info!
Thanks
Very good idea!
Better option, Drum-Tec Jam series with the TD-17 module.
Great review. Thanks!
I have just one question-for the extra equipment bit, don’t you also need a bass pedal?
Is this td17 much better than td11? I have td11kv with vh11 and thinking about change. Are sounds samples better?
Is it better than the td 25 module thanks for the video.
Mike Mike That question was actually answered in the video:)
Vdrum Tips l will watch it again.
Really appreciate the informative (and entertaining!) review. Thanks! :-)
I can live with the cy8 crash, the cy5 hihat is okay since that kit is cheaper than the kvx, but the ride needs to be upgraded.
kunns123 a second hand cy13 costs 120$. That is not too expensive.
Cy-15 would be great with this kit.
@@darrelwheeler idk i play a converted acoustic aka A to E
I love this video!!!!!!! Keep up the good work!
Thanks:)
Do they come with a kick pedal for the kick drum?
super review
This or td25?
I am upgrading from a TD-9KX2 module to a TD-17. My snare is currently a PD-105. What's your advice on changing the PD-105 to PDX-12 snare and moving the PD-105 to floor tom?
That's a good idea since the PD-105 will likely hot spot a bit.
Have just bought the PDX-12 snare pad for my td-11 do you have some good advices for the parameters.
thanks
Hi I currently own the TD ll
I am wondering if I am able to use the TD 17 module on My td 11 set... Thanks.
