  • To play the riff of money for nothing, the legendary track from the Brothers in Arms album of Dire Straits, you have to practice the 3 finger picking style that Mark Knopfler uses a lot in his guitar riffs and rhythms. Leave a comment if you are interested in more content !!

Hey man I don't like the sound of that shit. (What you said about players, (guitar).
I personally play several instruments, and the comment, "just a guitar player" pissed me off a little.
Having been lucky enough to have put food on my children's table from being "just a guitar player"
Maybe I'm being too sensitive in my old rockers age but 🎸 I guess it's the Rock&Roll in me.
P.S.im seriously baffled even further by your usage of the Queens English. I'll bet you don't play or you wouldn't say that shit. Peace!
P.P.S. The moment you create sound just for the beauty of that sound, your a fucking. musician. PERIOD!
There is no difference you see. He likes it, the way it sounds. I don't care if he's slapping a branch against a tree. He digs it. And if it's music to his ears? It's music. Therefore making him a musician. No?

    • @alevanf
      @alevanf ปีที่แล้ว +10

I think it's all about the strumming pattern, pay attention to what he does at first with palm muting, he's gonna keep that pattern while alternating with open parts like the beginning, then return, but the secret is to alternate correctly the lower part of Mark Knopfler's hand position (two fingers) and upper part (thumb), using 2 fingers on first note of the riff, then the (thumb + fingers) X2, and then try to stay in groove with the (thumb + finger) X6 + thumb. I think understanding this pattern is key, and then working towards details, like muted harmonics and overall groove feel.

Yes. That clawhammer technique that you demonstrate at the beginning is vital to the sound. All the muted on-beat stabs are thumb down strokes. In fact, once you realise that, it becomes easier to play.

That's awesome, very rarely do people actually get what I refer to as the Knopfler Claw Technique right. I wish I could nail it like that because I love that song/riff, unfortunately I broke the knuckle closest to my hand on the index finger of my picking hand and my dexterity suffers for it. I have work arounds and got really good with chicken picking so I just do my own thing with it.

Tone on my telecaster bridge pup with tone rolled back a fair bit works for me but I havnt found an exact patch out there for any effects processor... yet, I say yes because there must be one worthy of capturing the true essence.
But it is very much doable with just a guitar and amp and some compression if you have it. But humbuckers are the way if you dont have a beefy high output bridge pup. Maybe 500k pot dedicated to a really high output singke coil bridge pup with thick strings. Theres so many ways to approach this best is to keep it simple 💯
This below is word for word copied off a search I found that is what I use...
"In early performances, Mark tried to recreate the sound with his Les Paul set to the bridge-position humbucker using his amps and little else for tone shaping. Later on, he started using the neck humbucker, adding a rackmount EQ/filter effect to alter the tone (best recreated with a wah pedal set to a fixed position"
Also in searching for the right tone i found its a lot like a ZZ Top style tone.
    And
Finger picking a les Paul junior plugged into a laney amplifier.
    Or
    Marshall JTM45
    Guitar one left channel lead
    Guitar two right channel lead
Both guitars 100% Mr Knopfler fingerstyle.
I genuinely hope this helps someone it's a great sing so the more folk playing it right the better I say
