Playing Old Games on the Steam Deck is Delightful

  • Sure, flashy new games are great but I have to say, playing old games on the Steam Deck is equally if not MORE enjoyable. That's thanks to a variety of factors that make the Steam Deck a great way to explore older (maybe not QUITE retro) titles. So, this video covers some of the reasons I think the Steam Deck is an ideal platform for aging titles along with a few of the older games I've been playing so far.

    Basically previous gen 'AAA' games will run best and greatest on the latest hardware because:
    + naturally were made with older targeted specs
    + optimised and patched over time
    + become cheaper, with 'goty' editions, bundles, bargain bins, pre-owned etc...

      @@arvindhmani06 I go back to the original Prince of Persia every few years. Its learning curve wouldn't make it into a game today, nor would the hour time limit, but other than that, I feel it holds up well to this day. It is an action platformer that uses realistic characters that was made in the late 80s.
      Supaplex is an action puzzler that got its sub-genre ("box pushing") to its absolute ultimate maximum to the point where even now, it's rare that other games try to take it on anymore.
      The first Fallout game is an absolute gem, but I don't know how well it works with the controls that the Deck provides.
      Abzu is an amazing (third person) exploration game. You're a weird character exploring a beautiful (even if purely graphically it's a bit dated, the setting created is still beautiful) underwater world and saying much more is hard in general and takes away from the exploration you could do yourself

    I have found that most modern games can offer three hours of battery life as long as you force the TDP to 8W and lock the framerate to 30fps (and lower settings until it becomes stable). Games like Cyberpunk 2077, FFVII Remake, Witcher 3 offers three hours with optimized settings. But I agree the whole PS360-generation has tons of great games that hold up extremely well on a portable system. Especially since the Steam Deck is powerful enough to run them at 60fps with decent battery life. I'm thinking, Enslaved, Batman Arkham-series, Dishonored, Bioshock, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Street Fighter IV (instead of "V"), Dirt 3 etc. They also don't take up a lot of disk space. :)

    • @YourPlayer2
      @YourPlayer2  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good info to have and appreciate it! And yes, seems like that whole 360/PS3 era strikes a great balance between performance and battery life so it's been a blast combing through the library to find games from that timeframe. Plus you're right- Not gonna find any 100GB monstrosities in that camp :p

    • @christianroman530
      @christianroman530 ปีที่แล้ว

      30 fps on a Lil screen is nausea inducing in my.opinion.. after ps5 I will only play 60fps

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christianroman530 well, good luck doing that on any handheld device today with modern AAA games. It's just not feasible. You just can't expect 200W performance in a ~10W machine. It's not physically possible, and it only works in "fantasy land"
      On PC I play at well above 100fps in most games, but I still consider it to be okay for a handheld device to run modern AAA games at 30fps (or preferably 40fps). In The Witcher 3 I can quite easily get 3 hours at 40fps on the Steam Deck. Keeping in mind that the increase from 30fps to 40fps is the same as between 60 and 120fps perceptually. They both offer a frame time increase of ~8ms. Which is quite massive.
      I would go as far as say that trying to run modern demanding games at 60fps on a handheld is actually quite stupid, since you don't hit the efficiency target of the APU and obliterate any signs of battery life.

    @mandrews6282 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Been playing Arkham City and Bioshock lately. City gets you 4.5 hours battery at default settings 60 fps and Bioshock gets me over 5 hours battery at default 60. The 360 era really does seem to be a sweet spot and the games look and run better than they did on console at the time.
    Also newer games like Little Nightmares 1 and 2 that I couldn’t get into on console work great for Steam Deck for the style of games they are. And Bully is definitely one I’ve also been playing. Never played it when it released and it’s old enough that it’s harder to get into on console, but on a handheld it’s great.

    Yeah the Deck is absolutely amazing for say 5+ year old AAA games. It can power through the latest titles surprisingly well. But games like Prey (2017) and Dishonored are great examples. Dishonored specifically I've had a blast with. That's the game that really got me into using the touch pads. The top community controller layout had the touch pads tweaked in such a way where it felt really natural to use them. Prior to that I was having issues getting the sensitivity down. But once you start getting the touch pad/gyro controls down and feeling right it is an amazing experience. Games like this run buttery smooth and even get you good battery life.
    If you were to use the Steam Deck as your only gaming device, it would be so sooo cheap in comparison to anything else. Games like the ones listed can be had for so cheap at this point and really are very close to the same quality as the top games releasing in 2022 or 2023, just slightly dated at this point. But the difference is you can snag these excellent games for closer to $10 than $70. Especially if you're willing to be a bit patient, you can get incredible games for pennies on the dollar, have them run at the displays max framerate, and get substantially better battery life than you would playing some of the latest releases.
    I'm a sucker for graphics and the latest and greatest games coming out. But if you can look back just a few years, you can find some gems that really tick nearly all of the boxes. The Steam Deck is nearly perfect if you can put up with prioritizing these types of games.

    • @MoAli72

      I was thinking of getting the Dishonored games. You convinced me to finally give them a chance (never got round to them). Will check Prey too.
      I feel I missed a lot of gems from that generation. Do you have any others I should look out for? No specific genres. I was also thinking about Divinity 2 as always wanted to play but again, never really got it.
      Thanks.

      @@MoAli72 hey I missed this somehow but I have a few recommendations. Edit: TH-cam bugged out and said your comment was from like 5 months ago. Which is why I said I missed it lol.

      - Little Nightmares 1 & 2

      - Sleeping Dogs
      - Mafia Games
      - Max Payne 3
      - The Pedestrian
      - Watch Dogs 2
      Checkout some trailers and find some you like. As you can see I really like narrative driven games even if they are light on gameplay. That's not everyone's cup of tea. But regardless, I recommend The Walking Dead by TellTale to anyone. The Definitive Edition has like 50 hours of gameplay which I played exclusively on the Deck and is my favorite video game story ever. I'm the type who has trouble sticking with a game or TV show due to it's length. I'll get bored and want to try something else. But TWD was excellent front to back.
