  • Some refrigerators have a "reset or trip switch" that is not marked or indicated in any way. This video is just an example of what you might want to look for if you are plugged in but not cooling. My owner's manual DID NOT show anything about this switch, I just stumbled on it by chance. The refrigerator was less than a year old when I had to un-plug it & it would not come back on. Good Luck.

I don't have one of those but I unclogged the dirt and dust around the coils and fan and my 29 year old refrig turned back on after being dead. I spuned the fan around and it started spinning on its on. It's working and never thought to look until watching your video. Those old Montgomery Ward frig you can't beat them. I miss when things were made to last. Thank you so much. You made me look!

An old fridge, in decent condition, newly acquired, just needed this little trick to kickstart it back to life! Thank you!

Thank you Michael Powell!!!! This also worked on my Frigidaire Freezer after the door had been left ajar and it overheated and the motor stopped. We didn't try to restart it for 24 hours and left the door open, but, alas it still did not start. I saw your video on the refrigerator and thought I would give it a try on the freezer. It looked a little different, but "voila" it worked like a charm. NONE of the manuals were of any help whatsoever in describing OR locating the reset switch, but your simple video was perfect. Thank you so much. We were afraid that it was the end of the freezer and we would have to replace it right away. You saved us a BIG expense!!!! By the way, I'm a female and I am the one that solved the problem with your help, of course. How about that?? Oh, and I'm also 78 years old. Big HA!!

If you have this problem, and it does fix it by following the video, you need to replace the defrost switch. They are a common issue with the older style fridge (not for the ones with the boards). The defrost timers get stuck in the off position and won't come back on. The screwdriver trick he is showing you can be used a lot of older style fridges with the old style defrost switches.
Most are located inside the fridge near the lights/control. Look for the same hole as shown in the video and the same piece he put the screwdriver in. Then use a flat head screw driver to turn it clockwise. You will hear the click, and when you hear the click, the fridge will magically come back on! These defrost timers are a cheap part (most under $25), and simple to change if you have any mechanical ability. There are a lot of sites out there that can give you a diagram by your particular model, and will show you how it goes together/comes apart.

I have a whirlpool fridge. The switch was inside the refrigerator on the top. I believe the relay mechanism is what it is attached too. Pressed it and and everything started working!! Awesome, amazing i am so stoked. No mention of this anywhere in troubleshooting. I guess its a repairman's best kept secret. Why it tripped I dont know, but while the backcover was off i vacuumed all the dust bunnies out from around the compressor, yikes! I clean from the front intake periodically but obviously that doesnt get it all. Great video! Thanx so much bud.

why did not I check your video earlier. My fridge stopped cooling since Dec 2108 and I watched so many videos and determined it was the starter kit overload relay. I got it 1 month ago and replaced it tonight but it still did not start the compressor. I was hopeless because I hired some1 to fix it in 2016 and that guy charged me $80 just to replaced the overload relay and it worked right away so I thought its the same problem. It may have been the same issue "the trip switch". It was as easy as that. After seeing your video just now, I turned the trip switch, it immediately turned on. OMG!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much. I thought I was gonna throw it on the street after replacing the overload relay. Million thanks to you bro!!!!!!!!

Hey I had some electrical issues with my main breaker box on Thanksgiving and during the resetting of my circuit breakers my refrigerator stopped working. Unfortunately I did not even notice it until last night (3rd day) when my ice cream was liquid. I made some calls and found it would cost me a few hundred dollars just to have someone come out. I saw your video and it started right up! Thank you! If it goes out again in a day or so like some of these folks say, I'll fix it again and buy the timer for $20. Wow! $140 just to walk in the door and then the parts and 'labor' to fix it. You saved me a lot of dough. Thank you very much!

My GE refrigerator just stopped working an hour ago. The light was on, but it was completely quiet as there was no fan. compressor, etc. doing anything. I Googled the problem and found your video. I checked the back of the unit and there was no box or switch that I could see. I then noticed that in your comments, several people noted that it might be inside the refrigerator. There was a small white plastic plug in the center of those controls so I wiggled it out. I saw what looked like a plastic flat-headed screw head. I touched the screwdriver to it and bingo --- it came back on! We'll keep an eye on it to be sure that it's still OK but in the meantime, thanks so much for saving all of the food that we in it and the cost of a new unit! It's just too bad that GE and other manufacturers don't label this so people don't have to search for the solution.

This is just a slot in the defrost timer to enable manual turning which can help with fault finding. A defrost timer can stop for a variety of reasons. By manually turning this you may enable the compressor which will start cooling your fridge. If you are really lucky the problem might not arise again. More often than not it will. Your actions may even cause more problems by not allowing the fridge to enter into a defrost cycle. Do not expect your fridge to just keep running if you are initially successful with this "re-set" method. Keep a close eye on it as you may wake up in the morning to a disaster. Whatever you do, don't go poking around around the back of any appliance unless it is switched off and unplugged at the power outlet. While i am here, do not turn your fridge on and off quickly. Pressures inside the system need time to equalize for usually a good 2 or 3 minutes. Otherwise you will trip the compressors electrical overload protection. This will however usually reset itself after a few minutes or so. This is why in a electrical storm your fridge may stop working as power may drop out and quickly back in.

So I accidentally flipped the breaker for the garage fridge off and back on quickly when I noticed, and it won't come back on now. What would you suggest that I do to try and fix it. Thanks in advance.

      @snapcracklepop5921 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Thisworldisdoomed06 late reply and you are probably sorted out by now but sounds like you tripped the thermal overload on the compressor for reasons mentioned above . turn power off wait 10 minutes and try again. There are many other reasons why your fridge may not start and that's why it is a specialized trade. Even i get caught out from time to time and resort to TH-cam videos . The odd video is very helpful most are not some are downright dangerous. Must be very hard for people who don't at least have a trade background. Luck to you.

@@snapcracklepop5921 Thanks brotha. I appreciate ya getting back to me though. It was a little bit delayed, but it finally did kick back on. I do have a little bit of a background in HVAC, but really haven't ever serviced a refrigerator, even though I know they operate on the same principles. But like you said, I rely on youtube videos often, when I'm serving/fixing something that I'm not particularly familiar with. Thankfully this didn't require me to do much. Didn't even pull it away from the wall lol. I just waited it out and in the morning, pleasant to my surprise, it was back on 😆. Anyways, thanks again for messaging me back. Take care brotha.

This is commonly known as a defrost timer. On some refrigerators you have like an 8-hour run. And a 20-minute defrost duration. Turning the timer advances it out of defrost. There's only one thing that will solve this problem and that is replace the defrost timer.

It's very important to keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. If the temperatures aren't kept at the proper settings the more chance Listeria, a bacterium that causes foodborne illness, can grow, especially if the refrigerator temperature is above the safe temperature. Thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.

When it went into defrost the next time, the switch never came back on. Turns out it was a bad defrost timer switch. Ordered the part from AppliancePartsPros for $40.05 plus $6.95 shippping. Part arrived from California to AZ in 2 days. Unplugged the unit, and it took all of 2 minutes to replace the part. Plugged the unit in and the frig has been cooling like it is supposed to do.

Thanks! We just replaced our noisy evaporator/fan in the freezer, and it worked for a while, then quit. We put the old evaporator back in, and it didn't work either. After seeing this video, we looked around - didn't find a switch in the back, but found one inside the fridge compartment, around the middle of the "ceiling" of the fridge - near the temp controls. The switch looked exactly like the one in the video - a little hole with a shallow slot for a screwdriver. Thanks again!

Some videos talked about testing and/or replacing the 'ptc starter' or 'overload' relays. I am glad I found your video before doing anything else. In your scenario, you may have had an actual "reset switch," actually called a circuit breaker (just like the ones that control large household circuits). If your breaker trips more than once, I would suggest diagnosing the larger issue that's causing it to break the circuit. It could (and usually would) be a fire hazard.

But to see that it's something small like this. I believe the manufacturer should have informed the buyer about this in case something goes wrong. The fridge is less than a year old, so I don't know what caused it to be stuck in defrost mode and wouldn't come out. I hope the defrost switch just malfunctioned and that it doesn't need to be replaced.
