The video helped me a lot. My freezer wasn't working at all. There was frost but no cooling and the fun wasn't turning on but when I tried to adjust the timer slightly as in the video everything went on
This video was so helpful, especially the side explanations. Very comprehensive and helped me to understand how the freezer/fridge connection actually works. THANK YOU.
Thanks for the info. What is going on if refrigerator seems cold enough but freezer will not freeze cold enough for frozen foods? I’ve checked the heater, works fine.
How nice looking at this video cause I’m having this kind of problem. It’s being almost 10 hours that I unplug the unit and it’s defrosting. Tomorrow morning I’ll fallow ur advise hoping my 5 year old refrigerator will go back like it was. Thank you so much
Great video.... Let me tell you why.... so, the other day I replaced the heater element in my Frigidaire (GLRS263ZDB4) side-by-side refrigerator. It took 4 days to get the replacement element, IT SEEMED LIKE FOREVER. Afterwards, I let it run overnight and everything was fine.... it worked great. Wanting to make sure that everything was going to be fine for more than 7 hours, I opened the freezer section and put pressure on the thin metal cover that covered the cooling coil in the freezer.... BUMMER... I could tell that frost was building up behind it again. I removed the 4 screws for the cover and saw that the top portion of the coil was very frosted, the bottom half looked good. Not having any experience with this repair and not sure that the heating element was working, I saw another video telling you that you had to press the refrigerator door switch three times to engage the adaptive control for the coil defrost. I tried that a few times and BLAM.... NOTHING.... NOTHING AT ALL. So now, I'm questioning my repair. I see your video an hour later and it says to press the refrigerator door switch five times, not three and SUCCESS.... THE COMPRESSOR QUITS RUNNING, AND THE COILS, WITHIN A MINUTE ARE COMPLETELY DEFROSTED. So now I'm relieved that the repair was a success.... now hopefully the Defrost Thermostat and/or the Refrigerator Adaptive Defrost Control won't go bad... at least any time soon.... THANKS AGAIN.
Bill, great channel. Have Kenmore top freezer that was not adequately cooling. Replaced defrost timer. The freezer is now between -5 and +22, fridge stays +43. Checked thermostat as you showed and it works. Fridge lives in garage in Florida but we had nights in the low 30s. Help appreciated-also fixed the sagging door.
Excellent video. Had the same problem with a new Frigidaire just 6 months old. Froze up once, fridge went hot. Second the timer just stopped whole thing went hot. Finally on the third service call had the tech pull the timer. That solved the problem.
Bill, you are a good man! I have the exact Frigidaire top freezer fridge. My problem is the top freezer does not get ice cold. I think my problem began when I shoved a large item in freezer and closed freezer door. The freezer door did not close fully, it was ajar by about 1/4 inch. I didn't notice it for about 2-3 days later. Noe, I can't keep ice cream or make ice in an ice tray. Help! After watching one of your other videos, I am thinking it might be the defrost timer. Should I just stick a flat head screwdriver in it? Turn clockwise or counter clockwise?
I have a 2-door Hotpoint fridge and it had stopped cooling for some reason a few months ago, so I stopped using it. But I would like to fix it. I plugged it in today. The compressor is working, is a little warm when you touch it but no cool either in the freezer or refrigerator. I don't remember I had a defrost issue with the fridge. Not sure where to start and what to check. Can you suggest some steps to check this fridge as to what the problem might be?
Similar problem w/ 1998 Kenmore, removed ice buildup in drain & air flow, now have air flow to fridge, but not very cold. Perhaps the defrost timer? Thanks Bill, great video, will look for more.
First, make sure that the condenser fan on the bottom next to the compressor is running at the same time when the compressor is running. Also, verify that the condenser coil is clean of dust and hair. If it's all good, you may have a Sealed System problem. To find out, remove everything from the freezer and look at the evaporator coil. (before you do this, let compressor run for about an hour) The evaporator coil should be covered in a thin layer of frost in a healthy system. If there is only one patch of frost somewhere on the top or the bottom, it's time to go shopping for a new fridge. If the coil is completely covered in a very thick layer of icy frost, you have a defrost issue which is relatively easy to fix. Let me know what you find.
Oh boy! Our Whirlpool refrigerator model number GB2SHDXTQ01 quit cooling (60degrees), but the bottom freezer seemed to be functioning okay. We thought by morning that would be a different story. So, we transferred all the goods to the basement refrig and freezers that night. The next morning when the wife first got up she commented the Kitchen Refrigerator was cooling normally again like in the lower 30s. HA! All that work going up and down the basement stairs. I told her the Whirlpool still isn't trustworthy. I originally purchased a start relay and capacitor quickly because it takes days by mail to receive them. By todays observations, the compressor runs so quietly, but I feel a sight quiver through holding the door handle when the compressor shuts down (built in compressor shock absorbers movement). Any suggestions? This is a great video, thank you!
I noticed a while ago that the pan underneath is never filling up with water any more. The fridge isn't cold and there's one spot in the freezer that's frosting up bad but the rest of the freezer isn't that cold. It's an older Amana freezer on top fridge. Thanks for any suggestions.
I have twin samsung refrigerator, the fridge suffer from ice in evaporator after 5 to 6 days, all sensors are okay (evap, cabine and ambient) the fan works as well. Is this fan responsible for defrosting in twin refrigerator? and should it be replaced only if it stopped working or are there other signs that necessitate its change?
Try to find technical documents for your specific model. You may have a heater or just a fan for defrosting. Temperature sensors (thermistors) may have continuity but still, be "bad." You need to measure the resistance of those sensors and compare it to what's written on the tech-sheets, because they may be showing the wrong temperature. And that will make the defrost cycle too short. If your model uses the fan only, it could be too "weak" to move enough air for defrosting purposes.
@@Your-Self Thank you! there is no heater for this model, just a fan and the Temperature sensors (DA32-00066H) which has been already change. I tied last week the fan motor of the freezer fan (since it's the same motor model), but unfortunately yesterday the door display temperature started Winking as usual at 3°C and the temperature inside the fridge was about 18°C. Can this be a failure in the mean card or the voltage supply which results a weak to the fan?
@@mrdarho4718 Dual evaporators refrigerators are very sensitive to all changes, and it may be difficult to get it just right. The defrost sensor must be placed on the evaporator "inlet" and face the evaporator, not the wall. (INLET is where the small diameter copper tube merges into the large tube, so attach the sensor to the large tube) Defrost water maybe not draining very well, if you have the older style "duck-bill" drain pipe. The evaporator plastic cover may be cracked or not sealing very well, letting extra humid air where it's not supposed to go. The fridge door rubber gasket may be warped or cracked, letting too much air inside as well. What is the model number of your fridge? Maybe there is a hack to extend the defrost cycle. And, if nothing helps, the last resort would be to replace the motherboard.
Mr Darho this is European Samsung, and unfortunately, I can't find any valuable tech-info on this unit. By default, the temperature is set for 3 C... press on "Fridge" button a few times to increase the temperature to about 5 or 7 C (after you manually defrost the evaporator). By setting the temperature higher, the compressor will run less and give more time for defrosting. You can also call Samsung and ask them for a "code" to increase the defrost time (defrost without heater means that the fan runs while compressor rests, so make sure your fan continues to run for a while, after compressor stops). If your new defrost sensor was frozen, it may be compromised and needs to be replaced again. If Samsung tells you to replace the motherboard, I'd replace the board and the sensor together.
Great video about the defrost timer to add to my DIY library.... Also, I think I am having the same problem where the bottom fridge compartment is not cold...I just ordered the timer from ebay, and I can't wait to get my hand on it.... Thank you for sharing this knowledge.
yes Sir thank so much love to know more about working fridge /refrigeration you are very good helping me to know more about fridge its a big help thank you so much
Thanks for the video, your fridge is remarkably similar to mine which makes it extra helpful HAHA. It looks like my timer is finished and was stuck in defrost mode. Additionally we had some milk go bad recently so I'm wondering if the timer has been working intermittently. Good luck with the jeep rebuild, I used to have a Cherokee with the 4 liter until it got too rusty to repair.
If you have a Whirlpool fridge and the refrigerator timer comes with a black wire I am reading in almost all advice columns that the black wire goes on terminal #1. A very few people indicate it for terminal #2. My question is if one puts the black wire on the wrong terminal would it damage any component of the fridge? Thank you.
thanks' for all your videos Bill, those are helpful, you are with God now, thanks for everything and blessings for for all your family. thanks, thanks thanks thanks,,,,
Hi Bill this is Dwayne I have a Magic Chef refrigerator top freezer the timer will make a full cycle but once it does it will not click on to continue a fresh cycle I put a new timer and it and it does the same thing the only way it will start back up is to click it one time
Yes very sad .. I could tell this is a Real Good Guy !!! ( And so right on in teaching me about this problem I 've looked everywhere my Refrig defrost etcetera !! )
At 6:25, you mention that there is a possibility of fire if the defrost thermostat is bypassed. Has this ever happened? I find it scary that if I go on vacation and some malfunction equivalent to a manually-bypassed-defrost-thermostat condition occurs. I checked my circuit diagram and they have a 72degreeCelcius thermal fuse in series with a 384Ohm heater element which I think is driven from some transformer. It is a Japanese brand 237 litre net capacity, 240VAC and 580mA draw. I can sleep at night ... on vacation if the lockdowns ever get lifted. Appreciate the tips.
Bill, I have a Hotpoint CTX21DABRRWW fridge. I've replaced the relay on the compressor. Freezer compartment is cold and fan blowing. Lower fridge is not cold at all, no fan blowing, no air moving. I can't find the defrost timer on this fridge at all. Do you know where I can find the defrost timer on this unit?
Hi Bill , i have an Fridgemaster MTRF179A Model and in this model i cant find thermostat timer Nor i can find evaporation fan , the dialing cooling knob is just a simple switch , Am having only freezer but no cool air , Yes the ice bit thicker may be not defrosting and could you please help -Thank you
Hi Bill I had my first service call with the refrigerator was not cooling the refrigerator is an Old GE 1975 refrigerator No Frost unit. If it is no frost what does that mean?
Samsung RS263TDPN refrigerator, Freezer wont cool, fridge side is working, no frost formation on freezer or fridge coils. Sir what do you think the problem is?
Question: If the manual defrost timer malfunctions and the clock inside quits turning while in defrost 20 min cycle won't the defrost thermostat kick in and open the connection shutting down the heater, and therefore preventing overheating damage? Of course the refrigerator will not function any longer, but at least the freezer heater coil will shut down
Freezer fan blowing cool air but not freezing food or water. Whirlpool top freezer 13 years old.Condenser coils are clean, door gaskets seal good, compressor is not hot and food in freezer real cold but, water in ice tray will not freeze. The fresh food department is cool and not cold. Please help! Awesome video. Thanks so much.
Just reading a repair manual for a Maytag. If the temperature control switch is turned to maximum cold it will keep the door closed which allows cool air to enter the refrigerator section. It will cause maximum cold to freezer only. Possible this will be common to other manufactures.
My problem is that freezer is not cold on my Frigidaire top freezer refrigerator. The fan is blowing in top freezer. I did the turning the defrost timer with a flathead screwdriver. No help. However, I can hear hum noise coming from back of fridge. Any ideas?
Hi I have a problem whit Kenmore 500 series spin to slow I chenge the tub copling I replace clutch kit including the electronic part end calibrate the machine end still not working
MR BILL so my situation" Frigidaire like yours.. freezer working refrig not cooling. I advanced the df timer and every thing came on.. fan, compressor, and blowing cold air to refrig. Left for a week vacation came back freezer working compressor on no fan refrig not cooling.. advanced timer again but this time all it did was turn off the compressor no fan no refrig cooling Do you think it is DF timer?
After i checked the timer as you have described-> first turning one round in clockwise direction -> the fan and compressor got turned off -> then waited to see if the heating coil works or not.. i could not hear any sound of water or see the coil.? now how can i know that the timer is ok or not.?
Also with a refrigerator with the ice compartment on top and refrigerator bottom,, like the old school ones door up top door on the bottom cold air should be coming out of those holes from the freezer into the refrigerator as well I worked at a 136 apartment complex and I found this problem many many many times so you would take the panel out of the ice compartment up top and make sure no ice is blocking those holes
I might need that my display is bad I ordered a new board but I believe my compressor keeps shutting off and not cooling to temperature I hold buttons to reset. I need to ohm compressor and may need reley not sure yet
What if its both the freezer and the fridge not working? I noticed that it turns on again when I hit the reset button in the back on the bottom. You think its still the defrost timer?
THANK YOU!!! I manually turned defrost timer and my fridge came to life :) I ordered a new timer wont be here for a week :( Do I just keep turning it to keep things cool for now? confused
Can you help me on my fridge i replaced the compressor and themperature control so the unit work but it gets on defrosting two times for days what's wrong on that thanks
I have the same type frig, defrost timer is working but frig runs all the time.. freezer good frig kinda cool, I have it turned up all the way any idea?
Hi Bill, great video, But I have to opposite issue, my freezer is not freezing, the frig part is cool but the freezer section on a side y side, the freezer is cold but ice cream s melted. Anyway, I'm thinking my defrost timer may be stuck in the DEFROST mode could that be the probelm.? Thanks
I cleaned the coils (they were dirty), also put a screwdriver into the defrost timer and turned it clockwise a little because I thought it might be stuck in defrost. Anyway, after several hours the freezer section started to work and got down to 6-10 degrees, the ice maker was also working. I put the lower cover on the back of the side-by -side and pushed it back into place. Now today, 24 hours later the freezer section is back up to 28 degrees (not working again). using a laser thermometer I checked the temperature of the compressor before putting on the rear panel and the compressor was about 129 degrees (felt very hot to the touch) is that normal for the compressor to be that warm?
My problem with Frigidaire is freezer is blowing cold air but not freezing an refrigerator compartment is not cooling everything checks fine I just reset the thermostat timer like on this video so gonna see if that’s going to work also my light bulb shut off for no reason doesn’t look blown out
Why is the fridge. compartment dial not working? We have a Whirlpool 30" 18 cu. The other day I noticed that the fridge compartment wasn't cooling. I can here the fan running but, there is no cold air. Whenever I move the dial to recommended setting or cooler, nothing happens. The fridge is about 15 years old and has never been cleaned underneath or in the back. Our son is suppose to clean this every 2 years and, he has told me several times he did do it. I am wondering if he is telling me a lie!? Could this be the problem? GOD bless and thanks a lot. Update: I also noticed the freezer dial clicks when I move the dial but, the fridge dial doesn't click at all. If I turn the dial all the way up, the fan shuts off but, when I turn it down it comes back on just no cold air. Awesome video, Bill and thanks so much for your knowledge.
i got a frigadare top freezer 18 cf it rund compressor running fans running no cold nothing the timer works replaced the thermostat in the freeer next to the coils still nothign the thing was 2 years old first it was freezing next to the coils then now this its sat for the last year im out of clues i did also replace the compressor switch even thos i herd it kicking on

My problem is that my fridge and freezer go warm and when I just barely tap the thermostat it will start running again and cool both sections again. A day later it will be warm again. Is this the defrost timer or the thermostat?
Hey Robert, I agree with you and Bill - only for test purposes, but here is how one would bypass a defrost thermostat. Locate the defrost thermostat which is clipped on to the evaporator and is about the size of a $3 stack of quarters and has 2 wires coming out of it. Quick side note, a defrost thermostat is simply an on/off switch based on temperature. So, I think about it like this...the switch once activated by temperature gives the electricity a path to go from one wire to of the thermostat to the other wire. So, to bypass a thermostat (**unplug the fridge first!)!you'd simply cut the thermostats 2 wires, strip the wires, and wire nut them together and plug in your fridge again. This in effect 'tricks' the fridge in to thinking that it has a closed thermostat (I.e. Heater on condition). Note: be sure not to clip the thermostat wires too close to the thermostat itself as you'll need enough wire slack to reinstall the part after testing.
But, you can see why this would be a dangerous situation if you were to leave these wires connected because if the defrost timer were in defrost mode, it would stay on regardless of the temperature. If the defrost timer happened to stick in defrost mode, you'd be lucky if the heater burned out before burning the house down.
Although I’ve ordered a new defrost timer, because it’s fairly cheap, after sending it into defrost mode and standing there with the freezer door open for about 15 minutes, I can’t say I heard water trickling in the back, like I just did the other day, long after my problems began. Perhaps, I need to stand there longer. Still, as the defrost thermostat is also fairly cheap, I may go ahead and order one as, I hate shipping time, particularly since some places will charge you for USPS Priority and don’t bother shipping until a few days later, so you’ve lost a full week or more. Plus, I’d much rather do this type of work during the weekend, when there’s a bit more time. I’m just learning about my refrigerator, due to the problems I’m having but, my impression is that, other than the refrigerator being at least 15 years old, I think that it’s possible that having water drip down from the freezer, since that line where it is supposed to drip was blocked for so long and then things getting really worse when it got very humid during the July 4th week, causing a lot more water to come into the fresh food compartment, I wonder if it’s possible that water got into the defrost timer and just ruined it. After all, it’s pretty much right back there, where the water was coming down. Also, I’m kind of glad that I don’t have a side-by-side. I get the feeling that the less solid state something is, the more it is prone to fail and, from what I’ve seen, those seem to operate by opening a flap to move air from the freezer to the fresh food area. By the way, I don’t know about anyone else, but I love to hear the sound of the defrost timer as I turn it. I like the clicking. Could do that all day.😆

(INLET is where the small diameter copper tube merges into the large tube, so attach the sensor to the large tube)
Defrost water maybe not draining very well, if you have the older style "duck-bill" drain pipe.
@@Your-Self Thanks, here is the link for the video, I made, that Summarizes the problem th-cam.com/video/BgDvckWUwfQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you.
This dude is a beast
I have a Kenmore and the freezer and fridge is not getting cold enough. Do you think my coolant is low and needs to be booted up?
Very useful information for DIY. Thanks!
thanks' for all your videos Bill, those are helpful, you are with God now, thanks for everything and blessings for for all your family. thanks, thanks thanks thanks,,,,
Thank you Bill great information.
Hi Bill this is Dwayne I have a Magic Chef refrigerator top freezer the timer will make a full cycle but once it does it will not click on to continue a fresh cycle I put a new timer and it and it does the same thing the only way it will start back up is to click it one time
One day before thanksgiving... at least I know what it is now - grateful
Yes very sad .. I could tell this is a Real Good Guy !!!
( And so right on in teaching me about this problem
I 've looked everywhere my Refrig defrost etcetera !! )
Should we be unplugging the fridge before doing these repairs? Not sure if you mention it in your video…
Very informative presentation Bill. Thanks a lot.
Hey how would you test the thermostat..?let me know as soon as posible..ok..?
Hi Bill , i have an Fridgemaster MTRF179A Model and in this model i cant find thermostat timer Nor i can find evaporation fan , the dialing cooling knob is just a simple switch , Am having only freezer but no cool air , Yes the ice bit thicker may be not defrosting and could you please help -Thank you
Thanks Bill, you saved me alot of money that l don't have right now! Haha.
Did you go clock wise or counter clock wise? to make it start cooling again if the timer was bad
The fan in the top freezer part of my MTF 1955GRQ Refrigerator is not running. What could be the problem? Thanks Dave
Any ideas?
What would be the Normal temperature in the freezer when thing are working good
Hi what should we check if a side by side frig does not cool or freeze tks
I have an ARISTON HOTPOINT refrigerator that does not cool at all. I can hear the compressor running but that is all.. Any suggestions? LLOYD
Hey Bill you're the MAN. Thanks a lot for the video. I changed out my defroster today.
Amazing video. Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏
Great video. I think it helped me fix a similar issue I had.
Where else might this timer be located? Mine is not in the fridge behind the light panel. Its not on the side of the fridge. Could it be in the back?
sir i will just ask how much is the timer cosr for samsung refrigerator?is timer expensive?
how would you bypass the dtt for testing purposes just to check if heater is working?
Thanks Bill for sharing you good knowledge with us..
I manually turned defrost timer and my fridge came to life :) I ordered a new timer wont be here for a week :( Do I just keep turning it to keep things cool for now? confused
Can you help me on my fridge i replaced the compressor and themperature control so the unit work but it gets on defrosting two times for days what's wrong on that thanks
hi i am doing some research on education ,i love your videos , can you tell me if you have any kind of diploma , or tertiary
I have the same type frig, defrost timer is working but frig runs all the time.. freezer good frig kinda cool, I have it turned up all the way any idea?
THANKS ! Helpful
Thanks
clean the fridge coils
if the condensing coils are dirty you will not remove heat also if your evaporator coil is frosted over from the bi-metal it will block the airflow
Who passed?
I cleaned the coils (they were dirty), also put a screwdriver into the defrost timer and turned it clockwise a little because I thought it might be stuck in defrost. Anyway, after several hours the freezer section started to work and got down to 6-10 degrees, the ice maker was also working. I put the lower cover on the back of the side-by -side and pushed it back into place. Now today, 24 hours later the freezer section is back up to 28 degrees (not working again). using a laser thermometer I checked the temperature of the compressor before putting on the rear panel and the compressor was about 129 degrees (felt very hot to the touch) is that normal for the compressor to be that warm?
oops, that was supposed to be "got down to 6 to 10 degrees in the freezer section.
Hi I have a GE refrigirator that the freeser is working but the refrigirator is not working at all any ideas thanks
My problem with Frigidaire is freezer is blowing cold air but not freezing an refrigerator compartment is not cooling everything checks fine I just reset the thermostat timer like on this video so gonna see if that’s going to work also my light bulb shut off for no reason doesn’t look blown out
Hi Bill, I live in Canada and I need defrost timer. I have maytag fridge. Where can I get parts for this thing.MTB1894ARS
Wow ,great , thank you buddy
God bless you from Kansas City
Great job on the video.
Hey Bill enjoy your vids is that a jeep your working on i just did a 95 yj .

You are awesome
Hi Bill i Have a doble door Whirpool and I think it's the timer not working
My problem is that my fridge and freezer go warm and when I just barely tap the thermostat it will start running again and cool both sections again. A day later it will be warm again. Is this the defrost timer or the thermostat?
could you make a video on how to bypass a defrost tstat? great video by the way! temporary purposes only! thanks!
+Andy Fulenchek thanks for the info. but I would still like to see it done!
So your basically putting the wire nuts together on the heater side? Correct?
+Robert Munguia no, a single wire nut that will connect the 2 wires where the defrost thermostat was before you removed it.
