Preah Vihear temple border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand explained

  • Cambodia and Thailand will take their centuries-old border dispute back to the International Court of Justice from April 15 to 16, 2013 to ask for a ruling on where the territorial border lies.
At the centre of the dispute between the Southeast Asian countries is an 11th Cenutry Hindu temple, built under the ancient Angkor Empire (now modern day Cambodia).
Both Thailand and Cambodia laid claim to the temple before and then after French colonial rule was imposed on Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
In 1962 the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, ruled that the temple, known in Cambodia as Preah Vihear, belonged to that country.
In its judgment, the court only specified the ownership of the temple, and neglected to rule on ownership of the surrounding area, which is claimed by both countries.
When the temple was submitted by Cambodia to become a world heritage site in 2008, violent, nationalistic clashes broke out in and around the disputed area between Thai and Khmer military forces.
Brief clashes ensued that year and culminated in deadly clashes in 2011 which killed at least eight people and displaced tens of thousands.
Both countries agreed to demilitarise the disputed area, an undertaking carried out slowly over the following year.
Cambodia submitted a request for the World Court to reinterpret its 1962 decision and rule on ownership of the disputed territory.

Delivering the judgement, Peter Tomka, president of the International Court of Justice, said the court had decided "that Cambodia had sovereignty over the whole territory of the promontory of Preah Vihear".
"In consequence, Thailand was under an obligation to withdraw from that territory the Thai military or police forces or other guards or keepers that were stationed there," he said.

As a half Thai i say that this temple should belong to Cambodia. We have enough temples in Ayutthaya and golden temples around Thailand.

I always like it when the Cambodians who are trying to make themselves look petty on the internet on this topic also spit insults on an exact topic on the internet.

Just saw my comment from 6 yrs ago?
It's also not the Thai's fault for fighting to liberate themselves from being slaves to the Cambodians either. Not the Thais fault the Cambodians lose so badly they are stuck in the dark ages for centuries afterwards.
I know not all Cambodians hate the Thais, but this topic was extremely volatile at the time. Flame wars erupted & bullets were actually fired over this dispute. And years prior, the Cambodians organized a mob surrounded a Thai embassy in Phnom Penh because a Thai actress said the Angkor belonged to Thai people. Which is true if we're playing the "I used to rule you" game of which both side definitely plays.
So yes, it's funny the Cambodians act like a victim.

Your point being? You're basically saying what I said. I love how you call it an invasion now. So again, playing the victim. Saying you're "invaded". The Thais claimed the Cambodian peoples were crossing the border illegally & settling their villages within Thai border as well. So if the Thais are to be believed, it's the Cambodians who intrudetheir borders to begin with by using an excuse of Preah Vihear. Not to mention, these settlers are illegal loggers who were cutting down protected trees. Which makes me wonder whose media is lying. I also remembered back then, Cambodians said it is unfair for the Thais for drawing their historical map & said Cambodia was under their dominion. But at least something good came out of it, the Cambodians draw their Khmer empire to include the Thais in their dominion now.
But either way, I find it is interesting you decided to talk to me 6 yrs after I made the comment back when the topic was hot. You can claim that Cambodians are not like that as much as you'd like today. Because this story is already behind us & time has certainly changed.

Like I said, it's 6 years ago, and that's if you want to believe the Thai media.
According to them, the old borderline includes the southern part of Preah Vihear (if you remember that), the Cambodian villagers around the border had been intruding & cutting down protected trees(protected as in endangered species here's the scientific name of the species from wikipedia "Dalbergia cochinchinensis").
Okay, now I'm reading this from a Thai source. In 2005, the Cambodian military intrude an area declared as a national park which is considered an territorial expansion by the Thais plus there are Cambodian settlers moving in within that last 10 yrs.
So from the Thais, the Cambodians were the ones intruding into their borders. Around that time, the Cambodians on the internet were screaming on how the castle was theirs & therefore it's justifiable. So yeah, I find it funny they make English videos making themselves look like victims when they weren't exactly cordial to the Thais. But yeah, you can say Cambodians think like that anymore, but that's because we're all over & done with this dispute now.

Knowing history, it's rather normal for countries with long history of grudges to be snotty at 1 another. But knowing the Thais, most of them are all barks & no bites, and they are really good at barking.
Perhaps you can elaborate on what is this discrimination you're talking about.

If discrimination is the fringes of society, then that shouldn't be a matter of concern. Because with time, that kind of idea will die as people learns to get along more & more.
