Mexican is a nationality, not a race. Most Mexican are of Mix ancestry European and native people of America because Mexico was the largest colony of Spain in the Americas, named then La Nueva España. Marilyn Monroe's mother was Mexican at birth legally, according to the Mexican constitution. Just like the United States Constitution, the Mexican constitution also observes that the children of Mexican parents are Mexican. Of course, this requires the child to submit a request for citizenship. So Marilyn Monroe's was legally Mexican of USA descent. Legally, Marilyn Marilyn was a United States citizen but was also legally a Mexican citizen. Both countries, the USA and Mexico, allow dual citizenship. In conclusion, the answer was legally yes. Now, your reasoning about ancestry, in the USA as well as in Mexico there are people that came from different ancestry, so the fact that Marilyn Monroe's mother was of European decent had nothing to do with her being a Mexican national by birth right. Culture has nothing to do with nationality and all to do with identity. You could be a Mexican citizen or USA citizen and be of any culture.
Marilyn loved Mexican food and culture when she was in ENSENADA she loved a tile she saw so she purchased it for her house she called her house her little Mexican Paradise.

Her given name is norwegian, her paternal lineage stems from british captains, and her mothers name (Hogan) is a dutch captains lineage. All in all, she's best descriped as the captains daugter. A north sea mermaid.
And just to add to the "Mortensen" name,- both dutch and british ships had a significant amount of norwegian sailors on them, and the docks of new york were riddled by norwegians. even though she's only norwegian by name, there's a high chance of there being a norwegian sailor somewhere in the line due to her lineages Hogan, Monroe and Gifford all being captains lineages.

Cafuzo= Native American and african ancestry. Almost dark skin, but not fully. And then you have dark skin black. I know some people like to use light skin black to refer to people like me, and the whole thing is just complex, but yeah, for the IBGE census, its still how it is.

She had Problems Stateside. Go figure.
This is mostly the case here with her mother - nothing to do with being Mexican other than being born there, which makes it even further for Marilyn to be claimed as having any Mexican in her - because she doesn't.
I think that happens in lot of places. What is also interesting is that people who are born in a country not their parents, and die in another country not their parents, are referred to by their parents ancestry. Even if they are wholly of that ethnicity, spending so much time in foreign countries should have some effect to make them not so native in their parents country. For example Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone, old time actors. One was born in Baja, Mexico, died in the USA, the other born in South Africa, died in the USA yet they played quintessially British people.
Mexican is not a race. Mexican refers to a nationality or a cultural identity associated with Mexico. So she could be Mexican, you could be Mexican, lupita the actress is a Mexican! , ( got it?) Mexico is a multi-ethnic and diverse country with a population that includes people of various racial backgrounds, including Indigenous Mexican (Amerindian), European, African, and Asian ancestry, among others. Therefore, while someone can be Mexican in terms of nationality or cultural identity, their race would be categorized based on their specific ancestry or ethnic background. Notwithstanding , The term Hispanic or Latino generally refers to heritage rather than race. Hispanic/Latino identity is rooted in cultural and linguistic heritage linked to Spanish-speaking countries or cultures of Latin America. Race, on the other hand, refers to categories based on physical characteristics such as skin color, facial features, and hair texture. In the United States, individuals of Hispanic/Latino origin can belong to any racial group (e.g., White, Black, Asian, Indigenous) because Hispanic/Latino identity is not synonymous with race. Therefore, Hispanic/Latino is not considered a race but rather a heritage designation that can encompass individuals from various racial backgrounds.
Tell that to the idiots on TH-cam who do dna tests and are surprised Mexico is listed as their ethnicity. Hispanic means Spanish not some New World country that speaks a form of Spanish.

Marilyn Monroe was born in the US, she’s American. Her mother was born in Mexico, to American parents, so her mother is Mexican by nationality, not by culture. Now, Rita Hayworth was of Spanish descent because her father was from Spain, her mother was American.
Gladys Baker would not have Mexican citizenship by deafult: her parents were Americans abroad giving her American citizenship - I doubt she would have been given Mexican citizenship unless she was an orphan or her parents decided to stay in Mexico.

It is sad to realize that for some people, being labeled as Latino can still be perceived as a sign of lower status, in USA, rather than being considered "royal" or "first class." It would be interesting to create videos exploring why some famous Latinos in the closet choose not to embrace their country of birth or their parents' or grandparents' countries.
Regarding Joaquin Phoenix, I get it why he does not identify as Puerto Rican: his ancestry is not Puerto Rican and his upbringing/culture is not Puerto Rican. For all practical purposes, being born in Puerto Rico is just a biographical footnote that did not imprint who he is. His parents were in a religious cult ("Children of God") and settled in Puerto Rico as missionaries. There was nothing Puerto Rican in them; they were there, at best, to convert Puerto Ricans, not to be immersed in Puerto Rican culture. They were like Mormon missionaries, but nuttier. They resettled in Florida when Joaquin was 3. Giving his young age when he left and the relative insularity of any cult (even if with missionary intents), it is a stretch to say Joaquin Phoenix was "raised in Puerto Rico".

This is mostly the case here with her mother - nothing to do with being Mexican other than being born there, which makes it even further for Marilyn to be claimed as having any Mexican in her - because she doesn't.
It’s a similar situation for sure but ultimately Mex is a “new world” country and not homogenous. While Japan is old world & 99% homogenous

So she could be Mexican, you could be Mexican, lupita the actress is a Mexican! , ( got it?)
Mexico is a multi-ethnic and diverse country with a population that includes people of various racial backgrounds, including Indigenous Mexican (Amerindian),
European, African, and Asian ancestry, among others.
Therefore, while someone can be Mexican in terms of nationality or cultural identity, their race would be categorized based on their specific ancestry or ethnic background.
Notwithstanding ,
The term Hispanic or Latino generally refers to heritage rather than race.

@@albierodriguez9797pheno and genotype is totally different. Canelo’s whole family looks mestizo. He just happens to have paler skin
@@albierodriguez9797 in truth Canelo is mestizo regardless of what he looks like. His DNA will not be 100% European like many Europeans are. You can easily tell by looking at his brother. I even think Canelo probably wore a belt that said mestizo at one of his fights. Also many of those North Europeans with slanted eyes are mixed with mongols but from many many many thousands and thousands of years ago unlike Canelo who' who probably has recent amerindian heritage from the last 200 years. They are Europeans with Asian history from thousands and thousands and thousands of years. Mestizos like Canelo are a hybrid race not European regardless of their hair color, eyes and features. Britney Spears looks like her. Apparently they have a distant common ancestor. Britney is English and Maltese apparently
I believe what matters, is ancestral inheritance, DNA, Genetics. Where her white mother was born is of no consequence in terms of whether Marilyn Monroe can be considered Mexican or Latina.
I do know from my own personal childhood experience, that getting as far away from being called a dirty Mexican was my top priority here in America. I believe many Mexicans have taken that approach. Changing one's name is a version of that effort, if color tone permits it.
I totally agree with you.

No she was not. Her mother was born there. Marilyn was born in California. But she has strong ties to Mexico even going there to find decorative objects to personalize her new home. She loved Mexico. She also spoke Spanish. All a well kept secret. But no.. she was not Mexican
Hi Danielle , You really tried very hard to make sure she can’t be a Mexican decent or related at all , good job !!!
Very interesting! It is very possible that one or both her parents carried DNA from Celtic Spanish bloodlines.
During the Crusade Pilgrimages the night returned to Northern Europe with exotic wives. The Celts and Goths were always on the move!
Great research, thought provoking!
There are many Mexicans with the Spanish celts and aren’t necessarily white European looking.
Celtic Spaniards have pointier, and longer faces and much bigger noses and born with dark hair...Usually the eyes are pin pointy and deep or close set.. Think Emilio Estevez
@@azborderlands Spaniard Celts look very European especially Asturias and Galicia. My Dad looked like a Swede. I think some folks in the comments may have a hard time grasping that race may not be significant enough to mixed race and creole, this is why we focus on heritage and culture because that is the definition. If you can look beyond the binary American racial system, you can see how interwoven certain communities are, creating a NEW community including miscegenation that does not allow for pure racial identification also invalidating “you look…” because it simply is not significant to us.
Being from New Orleans, and knowing what the proverbial "one-drop" looks like, I've always thought of her as passé blanc in the way she phenotypically presented before the Hollywood machine changed her look, in particular when I found out her father's side is unknown to the outside world (and I believe, to her). For some of us, it's not her mother's ancestry that makes us question her whiteness, but her dad's😗🤭
So you think she’s black instead of Mexican?
I can see that actually..
@@azborderlands Those categories aren't mutually exclusive as the majority of Africans were trafficked south of the border. Only 10% of the total population were actually enslaved in what we now consider US borders. The other 90% went to the Caribbean, Mexico and everything below😗

Marilyn's nationality is American because she was born in the United States. Her ethnicity reflects her parents' heritage. Her mother's nationality is Mexican because she was born in Mexico, though her ethnicity also reflects her parents' heritage.
Ethnicity and nationality are not the same. One is centered on genetic makeup and the other citizenship.
Nationality: Place of citizenship/birth.
Ethnicity: Ancestral lineage via DNA.
Cultural heritage: Country/cultural roots.
Latino is a cultural identifier that is utilized in the US context. It's not racial/ethnic. Latinos can be any racial or ethnic groups.
Mexico is a multiracial country just like the US- like every country throughout the Americas. Mexican is actually a nationality, *not* ethnicity. Mexican- Just like American can be of any ethnic background.
Most Mexican citizens are actually of Indigenous European backgrounds. And the rest of the country is comprised of European, African, Asian, Indigenous ancestry, etc.
Salma Hayek is Mexican, but her ancestry is Spanish & Lebanese.
Lupita Ngyongo is Mexican-Kenyan of Kenyan ancestry.
Ironically the Mexican government abolished racial data collection as a means of creating more of a unifying national identity, but anti Blackness and anti Native discrimination and anti Asian is widespread in Mexico. Since they don't have data, anti discrimination workers work with what they have to fight discrimination, but it's hard to fight racism bc racial disparities are not well measured.

Hey there!
My father was born in the Philippines to American parents. He grew up in the Philippines. He had dual citizenship. His family moved back to the USA when he was 17. When he was 18 he had to choose between Philippine and US citizenship. He chose US citizenship.

Her mother was mexican born from american (Anglo-saxon) parents so that makes Marylin Monroe’s a mexican descent too basically.
I’m Mexican American and know the story about her grandfather having a job in Mexico for a short time and moving his family there briefly. However, MARILYN MONROE WAS NOT MEXICAN, in ethnicity (indigenous + Spanish), not at all! Where do some people get such misinformation?!? It’s also very obvious that she looks very Northern European! Truth always coincides with reality. People look a particular way for a reason.
Marilyn herself was born in either General Hospital or Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, in the “charity” ward where poor people are born (Marilyn’s mother was a single mom). Marilyn’s REAL BIOLOGICAL FATHER was Charles Stanley Gifford, a coworker of Marilyn’s mother, per 2022 DNA tests, and Mr Gifford was definitely white, along with Marilyn’s mother, Gladys Baker.
Kinda frustrating seeing fully white people claim being Latino! Like no, your family just moved there at some point. It’s kinda weird tho, like for example many Germans fled to Argentina after WW2 so there’s a lot of pure white people there, but can they claim being Latino? Idk!!
I am Mexican "American." Her mom did have "Mexican Blood." But again, USA always tries to take away anyrhing from us by distorting facts. For example, I remember this Whyte guy saying that the "Mexican Wave" was invented by some Whyte guy in USA.
Mexican isn't just Spanish and Indigenous. There are Afro-Mexicans that came via slave trade, but LA is so racist they don't acknowledge black Latinos.
Mexican is NOT a race ffs
@@RogueReplicant I never said Mexican is it’s own “race”. But ethnically what makes up a Mexican? Remember, this is Ethnically. It’s the mix of indigenous native Mexican (also called, “Mexican Indian”) plus Spanish.
A person who is, say 100% Chinese from both sides (mother & father), but is born in Mexico is still 100% Chinese, ethnically! It’s the same with a person like Marilyn Monroe whose mother was born in Mexico, BUT was white from both mother’s side and her father’s side. She’s still 100% white. And Marilyn’s biological father was proven to be white as well, per a DNA test in 2022.
Her mother’s nationality is Mexican by BIRTH ONLY. Nationality just means you were born in a particular nation, but it does NOT mean you are necessarily ethnically that particular people group that is common in that nation. You were just born there, that is all that the word, “nationality” means.
This rumor is an example of people being too lazy to google. Marylin had a connection to/interest in mexico due to being born and raised in LA and the circumstances of her mother's birth. But she is about as Mexican as Meghan McCain is Panamanian. Her bio has a lot of things that make her reatable to people of all backgrounds (no father, raised in foster care, abuse, married young, fertility issues, depression) without making things up.
Her mother had a lot of mental issues, and Marilyn was raised in foster homes.
SHE IS NOT MEXICAN / LATINA / HISPANIC
All I know is that I am an American Mexican aka a Chicano . Born and raised in the USA , My parents came from Mexico around 1949. They came the legal way ! Cool video . Thanks
Her mother was Mexican(not ethnic), and there was a rumor at the time that her biological father was ethnic Mexican.
She was bilingual, so probably who knows 🤷♂️
Salma Hayek like Marilyn Monroe is the child of Lebanese (Arab/Asian) father and Iberian Spanish mother.
Yes but Salma Hayek is actually Mexican. Her family moved to Mexico, became citizens - and not just for one generation either. She’s Mexican of Spanish and Lebanese heritage. Marilyn is not. Her mom was born while her white american parents had a work contract with the railroad. When it was over , they moved back. They’re not Mexican like Selma - ethnically or nationally

You bring up a good point Danielle. A lot of my cousins were born in Mexico and crossed the border into Arizona. No, Marilyn Monroe was not Mexican by ethnicity.
No, her mother was mexican by chance, but never was raised in a mexican environment(not schooling in México, not a mexican or hispanic nanny), even if his grand father stayed longer working in México it's not sure than his kids would being imbued in mexican culture, having Eagle Pass on the other side of the Rio Grande or Bravo depending or which side are you seeing it.
P.S. mexican in México it's the nationality, but mexican in the US it's an etnicity, like cuban from Cuba and cuban from Miami or any other place in the USA, and hispanic or latino is a umbrella term for all the people of Latinoamerican ascent regardless of country of origin, and time living in the states.

(Why do they call the current Pope our first Hispanic Pope? He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and his nationality is Argentine (with Vatican citizenship). He is the son of Italian immigrants in Argentina. Why isn't he, classified as Italian instead of Argentinan? He speaks both Italian and Spanish, among other languages, if I'm not mistaken.
The current Pope, Pope Francis, is classified as Argentinian because he was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and his nationality is Argentine. Although his parents were Italian immigrants, and he has a strong connection to Italian culture and language, national identity typically follows the country of birth and upbringing. Thus, despite his Italian heritage, he is considered Argentinian by nationality. Additionally, his role as Pope also includes Vatican citizenship.)
The term Hispanic denotes an individual with a cultural relationship with Spain. David Beckham who is British can rightly be called Hispanic because of his relationship with Spain going back to his Real Madrid days
