My father was there, he helmed a LCT and landed a craft full of First Division troops on Easy Red sector of Omaha beach...Most of my life he wouldn't/couldn't talk about that day, he'd just say, "It was a mess." Never told his story until he was in his mid eighties., fifteen years ago. Still can't quite wrap my mind around what he told me he witnessed.
Normandy was not liberated in a day, it took weeks of hard fighting. My father’s division went ashore on D-day+12 and he was wounded in an artillery duel in Normandy but returned to duty in time to take part in the invasions of Belgium, Holland, Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge.
