  • In this first of a long-ish series of videos from Belgium, we we meet Mr William Testaert who will be our guide over the length of the country, and we start at the Royal Military Museum in Brussels, and go over initial Belgian military history.
    This is the first batch where I have invested in bringing along a cameraman/editor, goes by FixItInPost, and as you can imagine, he doesn't work for free. Any financial support you can throw in below would be greatly appreciated. This was a test case to see if it's economically viable.

    Finally a series of videos on Belgium. I am a 14th Cav Trooper from the 1950's who was stationed in Bad Hersfeld, Germany. As a result, I developed a fondness for Belgium. Such a fondness over the years that I now own the "Boss Rodgers" Café in Adinkerke, Belgium - next to the French border and about 15 km from Dunkirk, France. When you make your second visit to Belgium, you will have sufficient time to finally visit the great WW I battle sites near me, and perhaps, drop in for a Belgian Beer - the best beer in the world.

      It was called gallia belgica on roman maps, on early medieval maps, rennaisance maps and napoleonic maps. Belgium has always been known as belgium, the austrians called us belgians during the 1700's. It's mainly ignorant religious conservatives, who divide between flanders and walloon

    • @genmontgomeree9888
      @genmontgomeree9888 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wuk zegde gij nu? Maybe the Austrians already called us Belgians, but the people back then considered themselves largely just with their historical region/county/duchy or even city. Flanders, Luxemburg, Brabant, Namur, Liege etc. were largely what people associated with themselves and in Walloonia still do next to their national identity of Belgian. Flemish identity is largely created to distinguish them from the filthy protestant Dutch and later due to domination and superiority-complexes of the French speaking elites against French-speakers and (is some cases) the Belgium state because it has always been and intended to be a French-speaking state. Founding fathers like Charles Rogier and Alexandre Gendebien wanted to get rid of this "Germanic element". Gendebien even stated that the Flemish were one of the inferior races of the world. I suggest reading the English wiki page on the Flemish movement, it contains more information. The Walloon identity only came into existence as a reaction against the Flemish movement, see wikipedia but if not read 'the story of Walloonia' by Alain Gerlache, it's probably only in Dutch but the author is a Walloon journalist for rtbf.

For that reason, I fear we can't really pride ourselves on the heritage of the Eburones and such, since they were mostly "wiped out" and Germanic tribes were allowed to settle in the lands. Most interestingly, the divide between Germanic and Roman(ic) heritage runs straight across our land dividing the north and the south, that's what we call the "language border" and which has been the basis for the federalisation of Belgium since the seventies.

    I had the honor of sounding Taps from the top of the U.S. Memorial in Bastogne in 1977 when I was a member of Third Armored Division Band. Even after all these years I can remember the excellent war museum there, which we were able to tour when off duty. I also have fond memories of dancing with a really cute Belgian coed student at a party in Liege!

    I had the opportunity to spend 3 weeks in Brussels back in 1999. The Belgians definitely appreciate their history, and especially their WWII allies. I spent a couple of Saturdays wandering the neighborhoods around the hotel, and any corner with open space had a statue of Patton, Eisenhower or Montgomery set on it. I went to the Military museum and an awesome car museum in the same "park" (Parc du Cinquantenaire). The scale of the Military museum is impossible to show on camera. When you can display full sized bomber and transport aircraft inside, you've got some space. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    One of my favourite museums.
    A key fact that's missing - Belgium is French and Flemish speaking but both are Catholic. The Netherlands are protestant.

    The museum in Brussels is one of the most impressive military museums I have been to. Particularly the First World War collection which is immense.

    A friend of mine used to work for a Government agency with fairly stringent security regs., he said that Belgium was one of the countries that he had ro inform his superiors if he was traveling to for holidays. I was like "Rreally, Belgium?", apparently due to the likes of NATO H.Q., E.U. and Council of Europe being there, there's a ton of espionage and it's a security risk. I'm glad Belgium's history of arms manufacturing gets mentioned, along with a lot of influence in the international arns trade. I know the U.K. government had historically made use of Belgian arms dealers to distribute arms around the world with a degree of deniability.

      Belgium has always been a prosperous country with a weak state. On the one hand, it's the catholic heritage of dealing silently with issues without the "ignorant subjects" being implicated, on the other hand it's the history of being governed by foreign powers, making the "state" a foreign object to be mistrusted, relying on family and (local or political) clan instead for getting things "arranged" ('on va arranger ça') and funneling public means to private spheres. Belgians do not like interference in their private affairs. While we are very good at being creative with little means (that's the Belgian army for you), we're also very good at passive resistance, even to our own common interest.

    A Danish Officer, Colonel Sommerfeldt actually learned about Fortress Building from friends in Belgium, when planning the "famous" Fortress around Copenhagen, which prevented Denmark from being involved in the First World War! We had invited a German Officer up to look at the new Built, and from his Report, we could after the War see that he considered it would be too expensive to take control of Copenhagen!!! So even if becoming absurdly expensive, it was worth its cost, but became given up in 1920 without ever having shot a gun in anger! 😄But still it is considered among the finest of its kind! It has ben preserved back to the original, free for growth standard at places, with reconstructed "original" buildings, from the old drawings, but today it is mostly a Public Green Park round Copenhagen, with old Forts at Intervals and a waterfilled kind of moat, to be shot along from hidden and protected positions. It can't be seen from the outside, when coming over the land, till you meet the moat.

      Belgium is rife with fortresses. You can find fortresses of different generations. I think we suffered from the handicap of a head start and a lot of the fortresses were obsolete before we ever got involved in a war. First the brick ones, replaced by the ones in (unreinforced) concrete in different belts. Still, in 1914 the fortresses in Liège kept fighting against the odds. It took the Germans 10 days to subdue them, while they had counted on 3 days. As mentioned in the video, a Belgian cavalry unit stopped the German cavalry in Halen by dismounting and fighting as light infantry. The unexpected resistance of the Belgian army infuriated the Germans, who took out their anger on the civilian population.
