Commander Cody already gained cult status with his band The Lost Planet Airmen by 1980 when he was invited to play the Rockpalast. His music wandered between the genres blues, country rock, boogie, rockabilly and texmex spiked with his very own wit and humor.
The audience witnessed a colorful, high energy concert evening in the WDR Studio A in Cologne. In his known manner Commander Cody was rocking through the set list, always with a tongue-in-cheek.
That evening he was accompanied by Steve Mackay (saxophone, vocals), Tona Johnson (drums, vocals), Bill Kirchen (guitar, vocals), Doug Killmer (bass, vocals) and Peter Siegel (pedal steel guitar, guitar).
Commander Cody died on September 26th 2021 at the age of 77.

One of the tightest bands I ever saw. All great musicians but Bill Kirchen was outstanding.
I was going to say the same thing. I saw them in 1973 in Charlotte N. C.. New Riders of the Purple Sage opened but were too messed up to play.
R.I.P. Mr George Frayne, "Commander Cody" to all of us. Godspeed.
Spent many a stoned 1970s evening rockin' out to a fantastic band & their leader.

Bill Kirchen in the 80’s is a scary sight! Lol. We are all guilty of bad 80’s style though. He looked great last night at 76 in Wranglers! RIP Commander.

That was a fun band.
You are missing the really really funny chatter before the song starts... George takes a drink of his beer, finishes the beer and then takes the can and smashes/crushes it on his forehead and says, "I felt like doing that". It is really funny & enduring. George once lived in OCEANSIDE, NY among other places on LONG ISLAND.
Ok, it was a red plastic cup, yet still very funny for a former high school track star from OCEANSIDE, LI, NY... and a JONES BEACH lifeguard!
We used to have an old version on a record at my grandparents, I don’t know if it was this version or an original, but this by far is my favorite version

Grapevine Hill in reality was the Lewiston Grade" running out of Lewiston Idaho/ Clarkston Washington. They wanted to make it sound like California👍✌️
Charlie’s band played the Pair a Dice nightclub in North Lewiston, and had to drive up the spiral highway ( 11 miles ) to go home to Spokane, Wa. Nothing on the Cali Grapevine even comes close to these hairpin corners.
Thanks for that info as I was one who believed it was about the California Grapevine, partially visible. I never knew about your mentioned Grapevine until now.
Commanders version was customized to include reference to California. They were based in Oakland for several years
