Made in Japan, possibly the greatest live album ever. Deep Purple were famous for extended live jams and the 1969-77 era of music is littered with bands reaching out when on stage. For thise of us who grew up with it this is the best kind of live music. Deep Purple are, to quote Ian Gillan, primarily an instrumental band.

Purple never played their set the same way every night, that's one of the things that made them so exciting, that and their superb musicianship. No point in playing songs the same as the studio originals, the audience might as well stay home and listen to that. Most of us fans love Purple's intros, makes things interesting.

When you say that Richie Blackmore is just messing around (from 12:20) he's actually playing "Swedish Rhapsody" by Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960).

By all means check out the studio version as well, this is a case where both versions are great in their own rite. Im 63 and have this album as well as the machine head album the studio version of this song was on, got them both way back in the day. Also check out the songs - "Space Truckin" and "Highway Star" two more jammers from DP.

Best version imo. Best intro to this song, too. It builds so much tension, and then they go right full speed blues.
Don't be so impatient, it is a live party, and after all the song is called 'Lazy', so don't expect a hustle. The protagonist has just woken up from some weird dreams, and most likely has a hangover from super bowl evening.
Give him some time to get his brain working, he did not even have a coffee yet!😂

Patience, the intro was all part of the performance, what's the rush? When you went to see a band like Deep Purple you didn't want them to speed through the songs. Sit back, relax and enjoy listening to whatever they choose to do. 😉

Couldn't agree more. Deep Purple were first and foremost a LIVE act and unlike a lot of other bands, they IMPROVISED on stage. That's what made them special. If you went to a Purple concert at the time and expected a lineup of 3 or 4 minute radio hits, you were at the WRONG place. People need to open their minds and listen to what's being offered, not simply what they expect to get. The intro was neither too long nor too short ... it was exactly what Deep Purple wanted it to be. Cheers!

The keyboard intro was on the album as well, just a little shorter. Deep Purple did a lot of improvisation during their live performances and that is why each live performance was unique.

When this first came out whoever brought this album to a party was the most popular of all that night. See, it was late getting issued here in The US by about 6 months. So it mainly trickled in where I lived. Made for a nice Summer of '73, though.

Deep Purple were the first of the late 60's early 70's heavy rock bands. The likes of Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd all followed. They were the first and greatest. So good in fact that Jon Lord was such a talented musician that he wrote a Concerto for Group and Orchestra which was a live performance of Deep Purple together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

My sister had the double album , for my 12th bday I asked for this recorded on cassette , still have the tape 40 years later , it probably doesn't play , but it's Deep Purple , can't throw it out . Yes , I have the CD!!! Wait till you hear SPACE TRUCKIN !!!!

Back in the day, when this was a new album, I went to the "music store" and bought three albums which were new at the time. Deep Purple-Made In Japan, Alice Cooper-Billion Dollar Babies and Grand Funk Railroad-We're an American Band. Those were some great times. The Mk II version of Deep Purple is without doubt, the premier lineup. Some people like David Coverdale, but give me Ian Gillan every day. Thank you for the shout out, I'm glad you liked the song. It does take a while to get going, but it is called LAZY, so it is appropriate. For another suggestion on the same album I would go with Space Truckin'. On the LP it is the whole side. Enjoy and Thanks.

This song was written in a time when we weren't so impatient, it's the kind of song you have to just sit back relax and let the music roll over you like waves at the beach. Also if you liked this you should check out Rainbow the band the guitarist Richie Blackmore formed after he left Deep Purple with Ronnie James Dio.

My favourite performance/song of all time!!!! A LIVE band who treated each song as a journey with signposts to navigate by - anything could happen in-between. They walked on stage Never quite knowing what would happen, bouncing off each other to create a unique performance each concert. True musicians on fire at their prime!
    Check out;
    1) 'Watching the Sky' from 1999 anniversary performance of 'Concerto for Group & Orchestra' at the Royal Albert Hall.
    2) 'Ted the Mechanic ' from same performance
    3) 'Black Night' Live from Made in Japan ' reissue
    4) 'Perfect Strangers' album version

This is why I can't stand the studio version! LOL! In all seriousness, Deep Purple live, and this album in particular, are why in almost in every instance the live version blows away the studio version, as great as THOSE were. For me, Made In Japan is the greatest live album ever and I've only bought the studio version of Who Do We Think We Are and liked it (My Woman From Tokyo is on that). Sadly, I only saw the Mark 3 version of Purple live, the Burn tour. Fortunately, I don't recall much of that night!

Tbh, I prefer live performances that aren't just carbon copies of the studio tracks, especially when it turns into a proper jam session. Hearing most contemporary 'live' performances is disappointing, for me. Very little variation, if any, from the studio version, real-time production, auto tune, backing tapes/tracks. What's the point? I want to see and hear a LIVE performance! You were suggesting that the intro went on for too long and were waiting for the song to start. That's completely the wrong mindset. Enjoy the intro! It's part of the performance and you're getting to hear something new from ridiculously talented musicians and performers! Besides which, the intro, although different and including short bursts of other popular, non DP songs, wasn't that much longer than the studio intro. :)
