I saw them in concert at Winterland in San Francisco, around 1971. By far the loudest concert I have ever attended. They put on a really great show as you can tell from this piece. My ears hurt for about 4 hours after the concert :). This song takes you on a journey and Japan was never the same afterwards!

Deep Purple was one of the greatest live rock acts in history.
They played better live than studio versions of their songs. Each member playing tight and right on cue not overplaying the other band members. Perfection!

The keyboard player, Jon Lord, was a hugely talented musician who also wrote classical music, he passed away in 2012, such a great loss. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath represent the most influential trinity of hard rock; love all three but I just connected with Purple that bit more, and 'Made In Japan' is probably THE best live album of all time, no overdubs just a band at the top of their game. Try 'Strange Kind Of Woman' (some phenomenal vocal/guitar duet in that) and 'Highway Star' form 'Made In Japan.' The band sold in excess of 150 million albums but aren't talked about as much as Zeppelin, but I think they easily their equal. Thank you again, all the best from the UK.
I feel that a big part of why they are overlooked is because most people hear smoke on the water and although it is a good song, it's way overplayed and kind of simple and not nearly as impactful as songs like this and others, which makes the average listener think that they are a simple band. They however are definitely not that.
This song has everything a perfect concert song should have, including audience participation. Made in Japan is my favorite album by them, and Lazy my favorite song from it.
That version is one of the greatest jams in music history. Everyone is in top creative form. Not one thing is out of place and all instrumentals are improvised. Amazing what they could do at a young age. What a band, what an album!
Ritchie Blackmore was the reason I went out and bought a maple stratocaster. Made in Japan is one of the best live albums ever! Especially the lead guitar on Highway Star. It's almost a national law, if you own a guitar, you have to play Smoke on the water!
The guitar solos in this are amazing!!!definitely about taking it easy, relaxing on a sunny or rainy morning for sure. What I love is the rhythm, I mean the bass, the drums and above all the guitar riffs couldn't be any better. Love this song. It just puts me in a rockin' mood.
Very cool. In the early 70s Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Zeppelin were the bands ruling the universe. I own a lot of Deep Purple albums from almost all of their lineups. They really stand out as one of the greatest bands I think.
A bit of background. A lot of bands in the late 60s, particularly in Britain, were getting heavily into listening to blues and mixing it with rock. In the early 70s that sound got louder and more technical, and suddenly, heavy metal was born from it. In bands like Deep Purple you can hear the beginnings of the sound that would turn from blues to metal. You're listening to the birth of an entire genre of music.

One of my favorite albums, and one of the best live albums ever. The opening sounds were created by a distorted Hammond organ with a flanger. (Yes, I've played this song too.) As I've mentioned in other comments, back in those days songs were almost excuses for extended jams. I'll echo Natalia, react to "Sweet Child In Time" off of the same album.

As a teenager on Friday and Saturday night we would sit in my cousin's huge back yard with the stereo cranked up listening to music. This would always be one of the songs. A few friends would stop by and before we knew it we had a yard full of people jamming with us. Great times. Great memories.

AHHHH Deep Purple!!! In my opinion THE defining prog rock, pop rock, discovered blues, turned metal band. Made In Japan a defining vinyl of DP MK 11 for everyone's collection. Whist the solos are outstanding, the constant driving force of Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums keeps the song cohesive adding to Jon's (RIP) eclectic Hammond work and Ritchie's shredding. And Ian Gillan on harp and vocals. The entire album is one of a kind . And to think, DP after 50 years, are still together, touring and as per grapevine another album on the way!!!
Saw Deep Purple a couple of times in the early 70s. Outstanding stage show. John Lord was to organs what Pete Townshend was to guitars. MIJ, along with Machine Head are probably two of the best classic rock albums ever released. Cheers...
it sucks that they didn't film this concert. they didn't even want to record it, but only on one condition, it wasn't to be sold outside Japan. after they listened to it, they realized it was pretty good. and it's all live, with no overdubbing. thanks man. good reaction. Peace

I received this live double-album, Made In Japan, from a girlfriend for my 14th birthday and I have had it on CD's since the early 80's. The entire thing is a musical masterpiece. Great versions of Highway Star and Smoke On the Water. I love it when younger people enjoy the music I grew up with.

But expensive to watch though :( I went to see them around 1974/75 at The Royal Albert Hall, admittedly up in "The Gods" and the gig cost........25 PENCE........along with Led Zeppelin at Wembley Arena that year 75 PENCE and a year or 2 before around 1973 :Pink Floyd:Dark Side Of The Moon at Earl's Court: £1.....3 of the Worlds greatest groups, at their peak, in 3 seperate concerts for £2 combined.....sometimes you have just got to pay :)
Great musicians can play almost any style and make it sound good. Somewhere out there (I'm sure it's probably on TH-cam) is a video of Deep Purple at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland doing Smoke On The Water, but the intro is VERY jazzy, and really pretty amazing. You can't really tell what they're starting until they get to the famous SOTW riff. This song (Lazy) is probably my favorite Deep Purple song, and personally I prefer the studio version, but all the little embellishments in this version are entertaining and typical of how Deep Purple liked to mix things up in their live shows.

Life was hard back then, but as long as we had our music, to carry us thru, we didn't care, and we didn't know we were poor. My dad died young, and by the time I was a teen, I mowed yards, with my mom's push mower, for money to go to the skating rink, on Saturday night. I never even owned a house phone, till I was in my mid 20's. I got my first black and white, 19" TV when I was probably 19 or 20 years old. We stuck an antenna up, and got three channels! And when we finally got air conditioning, we were in heaven! Now, I sit in the air conditioning, looking at my computer, and I am LAZY! I don't want no money, I don't want no bread! lol

In case you did not know. John lord was playing his B3 through Marshall amps. that is how he gets that amazingly aggressive keyboard sound. This album also set the stage for many bands to record in Japan. The Japanese are hardcore hard rock metal fans to a large degree because of this band and this album. You have got to listen to Rainbow live San Antonio 1983-84 ? the song "Difficult to Cure" It is a about 12 min of Ritchie Blackmore with his interpretation of Beethovans 9th on a fender strat with a scalloped neck.
Before youtube and VCRs - you stared at the covers for hours whilst playing the LPs ...you SO wanted to be there .....and it was a BIG mystery .....youtube ...as great as it is , has killed that vibe .
This is one of those songs that in the beginning makes you think WTF, but wait for it and find out its a fun song. Im 60 yrs old and was jammin to this when it was brand new in '72 and I still have that original album. I also have the DP album Machine Head and another one I forget which one at the moment. We had some of the best rock music ever in the 70's and early 80's - but then thats just my opinion as its what I grew up on. The music scene was so prolific back then all kinds of music, now theres no singer/songwriter teams, not much in the way of traditional rock either.

I love to hear great musicians improvise. This is ingenious and playfull. Which is suprising if you know that they more or less hated each other when this was recorded. Soon after this recording Ian Gillian and Roger Glover left the band. They where replaced by Glenn Huges and David Coverdale.

Jon Lord on the keys. Ian Gillan is just offstage resting while the intro is going on. Hell, he had time to have a snack and a beer before going onstage to sing. lol
In case you did not know. John lord was playing his B3 through Marshall amps. that is how he gets that amazingly aggressive keyboard sound. This album also set the stage for many bands to record in Japan. The Japanese are hardcore hard rock metal fans to a large degree because of this band and this album. You have got to listen to Rainbow live San Antonio 1983-84 ? the song "Difficult to Cure" It is a about 12 min of Ritchie Blackmore with his interpretation of Beethovans 9th on a fender strat with a scalloped neck.
I was not allowed to play Lazy for my old girlfriend it was to dead on and she know it.

Before youtube and VCRs - you stared at the covers for hours whilst playing the LPs ...you SO wanted to be there .....and it was a BIG mystery .....youtube ...as great as it is , has killed that vibe .

This is one of those songs that in the beginning makes you think WTF, but wait for it and find out its a fun song. Im 60 yrs old and was jammin to this when it was brand new in '72 and I still have that original album. I also have the DP album Machine Head and another one I forget which one at the moment. We had some of the best rock music ever in the 70's and early 80's - but then thats just my opinion as its what I grew up on. The music scene was so prolific back then all kinds of music, now theres no singer/songwriter teams, not much in the way of traditional rock either.
This was always my favorite off this album!

I love to hear great musicians improvise. This is ingenious and playfull. Which is suprising if you know that they more or less hated each other when this was recorded. Soon after this recording Ian Gillian and Roger Glover left the band. They where replaced by Glenn Huges and David Coverdale.

A modified Hammond C3 through a Marshall and an Ring Modulator. I think it’s the Tremolo/Chorus of the Hammond instead of an Leslie 😉
