Chopin's elegy for his friend Bellini, who had died during the composition of op.25. It utilised the opening phrase from teneri figli, the opening aria of Act 2 in Norma, Chopin's favourite opera. In the aria the opening was played by the cello solo, and this arrangement immediately reveals the source of Chopin's inspiration.
I can't listen to this piece without being moved to tears. It is utterly breathtaking. Sol's presentation & performance is so sensitive and complete. It's as if she totally disappears so that only the music lives. Bravo.
Frédéric Chopin's Étude, Op. 25, No. 7 is a beautiful and challenging piece. Sol Gabetta's interpretation on cello is simply mesmerizing. A must-watch for all classical music lovers! 👍
Sublime musicality. What does such mastery bring you? The almighty undistorted and undiluted truth, the spirit of life itself in all its beauty and tragedy.
Frederick, not that I presume I'm on a first-name basis with the guy, gave the world so much beauty. But it doesn't shout out at you, you have to want to appreciate it. The subtle changes in tone, timing , duration is just brilliant 'coloring in'. Sometimes just a note that is slightly slow can mean so much. The amount of atmosphere and emotion, which is abstract information, that his music can stimulate, with so little notes, is sometimes masterpieces in minimalism for me. I'm a fan. This performance is fantastic by the way. Really does the piece justice.
This study always makes me picture a beautiful but coy young woman ( the right hand ) being courted by a young man who is clearly passionate about her, and is serenading her with all his romantic efforts (the left hand- the cello here). One knows from the start that she is favourable towards him, but she is going to make him work for her hand. He has to prove his worthiness. Fortunately, he has charm to spare and wins her over with his loving melodies, so in the end she surrenders and all ends happily for them both. Polina Leschenko on the piano is so beautiful, too!
Adding the cello to this Chopin etude, certainly with Sol Gabetta playing, has increased its innate beauty for me about 300%. What an incredibly sensitive performance this pair have achieved..
Gorgeous! Seldom do I feel satisfied when I hear an arrangement, but this I find not only totally satisfying, but absolutely sublime. As pianists we are always advised "Play this melody with a warm, singing tone...like a cello". Sol Gabetta, with her warm, singing tone and innate musicality, plays it exactly as Chopin must have imagined it. Brava!
This Etude is dreamy! So beautifully played by these wonderful musicians. I love this ❤ Thank you for sharing this beautiful moment to the rest of the world.
I hope that in the near future we can be moved by the power of the key that is C sharp minor... trust me we make ourselves over E minor in every song but this key of all of them I find more moving because it can be transposed easily to E major and because of that and that it in itself is imprisoning one to misery it can symbolize life and death greater still than any other key. The pain and impact of the minor contradicts the liveliness of the Major. That’s what I love so much about it, and people like Chopin mastered the relationship perfectly.
You can find the sheet music for Chopin's Étude, Op. 25, No. 7 arranged for cello and piano on various online music stores such as Sheet Music Plus or Musicnotes. Good luck with your practice! 👍
The pianist's face be like: what am I doing? Playing a chopin piece without the melody?

Thanks for that, wf. Bellini was such an influence in his day. Take, for example, Liszt's incredible masterpiece 'Reminiscences de Norma'.
Fascinating point, I had no idea. And what a performance, on such a beautiful instrument!
The recording quality is awesome
Such an intelligent audience: no coughing, no moving around in the seat and even WAITING 5-10s after the final note, to let the piece go. Fantastic.
Frédéric Chopin xD 👏
1:17....

@laflamezz1907 Coughing is an involuntary physical response, totally unrelated to intelligence.
I can't listen to this piece without being moved to tears. It is utterly breathtaking. Sol's presentation & performance is so sensitive and complete. It's as if she totally disappears so that only the music lives. Bravo.
what a nice interpretation.👏👏
Same 🥺 just wonderful ♥♥♥
Sol her musicality is just stunningly touching my soul. I actually got tears in my eyes.
I think from the first note i had tears rolling, that was beautiful.
3:24 The build-up to the main melody just tears my heart, the tragedies in Chopin's heart to compose such heartfelt tragedies, I can't fathom.
As a professional cellist, this is the best interpretation of this piece. ❤
I feel like whatever she plays is one of the best interpretations of that piece. She's incredible.
Omg she’s amazing and so is the pianist
The mind can feel such emotion, but how is it that a composer can pen such a beautiful thing. I am always amazed. I can barely play Louie,Louie!

This is the most beautiful version that i've heard.
Breathtaking performance. What a marvellous idea for the cello to take the melody. Works beautifully. Brought me to tears

Such a poetic commentary
Oh my god!! I am speechless. This is simply breathtaking

3:39 : this sight bring tears to eyes.
When a musician gives herself so entirely it is impossible not to receive her. Marvelous! Thank you !
Two wonderful ladies who give life to the notes on the page, and transcend time.
... Sol y Polina, cello y piano: dos fuerzas musicales incomparables, hermoso !!! ... 💜🍁💚 ...
Just wondrous! Anyone else here because of the mention in "Oh William" by Elizabeth Strout?
unbelievable performance by Sol Gabetta with such emotional intensity and delicacy that made me left speechless. What an artist she is..Bravissimo
Tremendously beautiful. Listening to this performance is like touching the sky.

My God what a masterpiece.
Câtă delicatețe şi seriozitate are linie melodică.
Well... that's insane. The future of music is getting deeper.
Wonderful Performance !

If Chopin had played cello, THAT'S how he would have played this etude! So heartfelt!
❤ beyond words!
Even more beautiful than the original for piano..❤
Fantastic playing. Amazing.
Some elements that the original piano composition possed are simply just not there. Great interpretation of such a powerful piece
Merveilleux... fantastique!
What a sound ! what a performance !
Chopin apreciava o som do violoncelo este estudo no original parece lembrar este belo instrumento. A solista é talentosa intérpretes deste arranjo
HOLY COW!
-- Une sonorité déchirante, une profonde maitrise. --
Out of this world...
Thank you... Glazunov!

It’s almost like he Intended this melody to be played on a cello
Well, Chopin did write a cello sonata, so...
i heard that chopin wrote this piece while imagined a cello playing the melody along with the piano
The left hand playing is the cello.
Beautiful.
Wow.

I need that microphone setup!
this chopin etude is so underplayed! but this hits home
Q hermosura
The main motive reminds me of the prelude of the second act of Bellini's Norma. Think that they are the same first eight notes or so...
It was intentional. He was mourning Bellini's death....
Grande Artista Sol Gabetta
