Anthony Geary opens up about leaving "General Hospital"

- Since his "General Hospital" debut 37 years ago, Anthony Geary has taken us on quite a ride as iconic character Luke Spencer. Today he is talking to us about the epic Luke/Fluke storyline, the tragic and touching 52nd anniversary episode, and his decision to leave the show that made him a star. We also look back at some of his most memorable leading ladies. We are honored to have his first on-camera interview since announcing his departure from GH. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this interview. I was one of millions, of women who fell for bad boy "Luke". I have loved watching him go through so many things. I wish Tony Geary all the best. He is loved, respected and missed.

Loved this. I haved loved Tony Geary for decades. It all began as a teenager, like it did for so many others with the LNL story. I have watched him through the years and feel we are so blessed to have been able to watch this man. He is a unique talent and feels to me a graceful, classy and immensely lovable human being. I get choked up because his work was so genuine and real. Thank you Paolo. And thank you Tony, and all these decades later you are still so loved by so many. ❤😘
I started watching GH with my Grandma in the 70's when I was about 11 or 12. I still watch to this very day and I'm almost 60
What a great interview. It will be hard not to see Anthony Geary on the show, as he has always been my favorite actor. Thank you for allowing us to view this. I was less than 10 years old during the height of the Luke and Laura excitement. I used to watch Luke on screen with my mom and sister, and then I'd see the real Tony Geary at the Mayfair Market in Hollywood all the time, it really confused a little kid differentiating the two apart. This dudes an icon!

I loved Luke and Laura ,they were meeting during my high school and college years and if I couldn’t see it of course I recorded them …I was addicted . They were great together ,, they made life interesting to look forward to it !!! Luke and laura was great and the wedding and the song Laura (everything - great acting ) Laura had a smile that lit up the world … the producers knew what they were doing when they put these two together - it was magic !! Loved this couple !!!

I rushing to watch Luke and Laura get married. I was pregnant and due real soon , my Dr said go home and get ready. So since I'd just come from my obgyn, and went to pick up my other kids, I thought I had time. All of a sudden, my pains began , I was desperate not to miss that wedding. So I tried not to tell my stepmom that I was in labor until the end of the show. She caught on ,and called an ambulance. I was hoping the ambulance would get there slowly, but they arrived too fast! I actually talked the paramedics into watching it too.😂😂

I grew up watching GH when I was a kid, but lost track after that. His voice is so, so familiar and comforting to me even after all these years and many years of not watching the show!
And in all this time, this is the first interview where I've heard him speaking. I think it's the first time I've even seen him out of character!
Tony u will be missed on GH! I've been watching the show in my my early teens till now. Love your character as Luke Spencer. GH will never be the same without you. Its understandable that now its time for you to take care of yourself and enjoy the years before you. God Bless! A true fan for years

Enjoyed the showcase of the pictures, but I think you should had featured Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie Spencer) as well. Tony & Jackie had great chemistry too as brother & sister on GH throughout the years.

Oh he should definitely write a book. Did you know he dated Elizabeth Taylor, during the time they were working together in the 80's about the Ice Princess. His life has sure been interesting and he is a pretty quiet dude, he doesn't kiss and tell.

Absolutely amazing interview. I love his honesty! I've only watched the show for 3 years, but I am a huge Luke Spencer fan and I love me some Luke and Laura (I'm 17 and I've see all of Luke and Laura's stories... I should've been an 80s baby). I am truly going to miss him but I hope he has a wonderful retirement. I can only imagine the type of emotional messes we'll all be over his last episode, 'cause you know they'll hit home with some kind of montage. This interview really touched me. Great job! xoxo

Oh yes, I grew up in the era of Luke & Laura in the early 80's, it was exhilarating for a teenager to watch their Love story, running home from the bus stop to make sure and not miss General Hospital. Luke & Laura forever the best couple of day time tv.

Good interview . Going to miss Luke . The hole Luke , Laura , Robert, holly, Anna , Sean and Tiffany storyline we're the best . I was very young at the time but some of the best story line wish they could get back to that . And the super couples they just doesn't have that anymore sad. My fav right now is jake/ Jason and Sam I have hopes for them .

This is a great interview….very telling and insightful. I think he [Tony] was trying to convey the fact that yes indeed he is gay, without actually coming out and saying it. If you listen carefully when he’s talking about what he said to Roseanne…he’s pretty much saying that he’s gay…he certainly didn’t deny it. It doesn’t matter to me whether he’s gay or straight…he gave us nearly 40 years of Luke Spencer, and he did it so well! He deserves every good thing that life has to offer, and I wish him all the very best! ❤

It's hard to get across to younger people, like my kids just how immensely popular GH was from 79-83. It seemed EVERYONE was hooked on the Luke and Laura adventures. Women had GH buttons on their pocketbooks. bumper stickers, radio stations had GH updates every day for the people who missed the show. I knew lots of men who watched too, not just women.
30 million watched their wedding. Princess Diana sent Champagne!

The luke character that fluke was talking I was stunned that was TG with the shaved head. I did not know it was him. Soaps should last forever but tptb lost their way. I watched an episode from 1979 & in the scene was luke susan Moore & jeff webber & it hit me right away that 30 years later it was luckys dad liz's dad & Jason's mom & their children became entwined in their own story with jake. How does gh not mine that kind of history?? Gh messed up badly imo when they have had sonny & carly run the show for 25 years & counting. So many legacy characters got kicked to the curb. The reason soaps lasted 40, 50 & 60 years is bc of the legacy characters. So take oltl I started watching it in 1989 when I was 8. We had moved in the early summer & I used to have my friends in the neighborhood. Now I was alone. We bought a 3 family house with my grandma & uncle. So my parents worked all day my brother spent the summer at basketball camp with my cousin so I was all alone & if i needed anything my grandma & uncle lived in the house. I was so lonely & bc mom taped the abc soaps everyday since I can remember I sorta knew characters on every soap. Oltl was her fave at the time but watched all 3 . So I would be around as she watched oltl so I always knew the buchanans Tina & viki. So I just kinda started watching & these people became my friends in a way. I was so glad erika slezak said she heard sally field say this when she made soap dish. This made erika happy as well. So from 8 years to its cancellation I watched the show I was 31. So I went through grammar school high school college working marriage & my first child . Their were years I went without watching but always came back & what a comfort it was to see viki jessica todd Dorian etc. Only on a soap could they in 94 go back to a 20 year old murder that happened on the show about who killed victor lord . I got into gh little by little starting in 96 & a fan by 98 & I recently watched the l&l story & so many characters children also grew up on the show or they sent the older characters kids to the show. That's why a character like todd who became bigger than the show to last had to be attached to the lords as vikis brother. The heart of oltl was viki & dorian & the show was at it's best when these two divas were on. Sad they would pitch robin strasser a few times not realizing how important she was . When I started watching Dorian was not on. But I loved her when she came back bc I learned of her rich history with viki.
Anyway thanks for the interview I've been watching for the first time early l&l & it's amazing to see these characters so young & running the show. Luke always was an anchor when I watched but he graciously passed the torch to sonny & jason but still maintained his importance. Also the " rape " if u see it I N context l&l already had chemistry so I'm not sure why they threw the rape in bc l&l already had enough obstacles in their way.

Very disappointing last show with no scenes with Laura. After such a great career it was very anticlimactic. Maybe he will one day come back and give us the reconciliation with Laura that we all want. The two of them sailing off into the sunset.
It's not like he has been prominent on the show the last few years. Actually I don't recall seeing him on the show in the couple of years. I actually thought he leftthe show years ago.

I grew up with this show until I was about 18. Then I left it for many years. Once TH-cam came along, I was able to see bits and pieces of the Luke/Laura storylines. I am now trying to keep up with his leaving, just for old times' sake. I have no clue what this Luke/Fluke (?) thing even is! And I wish I could find the other ep he was mentioning for the 52nd anniversary!
(He lost me on the courage of drag queen thing. It takes courage for a man to put on a dress and pretend he's a woman? Come on.)
In all these years, this is the first time I've ever seen an interview with him or seen him as himself. Even after all these years, that voice is so very familiar to me!

I enjoyed the interview. Was it me or did Tony Geary make several references to acknowledge that he is gay.
It's been rumored for decades though he's never said publicly his response to Roseanne Barr pretty much said it all. I think he's the best male soap actor of all time. I was a teenager captivated by his acting but if you look at the love scenes with Laura from her 1983 return it's painfully obvious he was not comfortable being a leading man or "sex symbol" and I felt for him what it must've been like to be an actor with such media frenzy in the 80s who was gay and couldn't live life as his true self having to pretend to be someone he was not to put out a phony persona to please the public. A real personal struggle he never seemed comfortable with any of it
