    This fucking movie legitimately, fully freaked me out when I watched it in school as a kid. It frightened me in ways horror movies didn't. Something about the way you couldn't fully trust the monsters, ever, and how the boy acted, the dark tones... idk.

      It's not supposed to be dark, and it isn't. I dare say it's more realistic than most. The monsters represent Max's emotions, their erratic behaviour represents his own. Movies tend to paint childhood as pure and perfect, which adults tend to forget it isn't.

    Unpopular opinion?: I actually really enjoyed this movie as a kid. I loved that the monsters were scary and I liked the music. I still occasionally listen to the soundtrack to this day.

    Watched this again on a flight and cried. I relate to his anger and deep sadness for feeling misunderstood and not knowing how to handle it. Even though I would never do this as a kid I connect to his emotions, imagination and dream like state

      There is a HUGE plot hole in that. He finds out his girlfriend is pregnant in 1989, yet the movie takes place in 2009, and the oldest of the two kids in 17. What happened to that first kid? I feel like they should have explained that. Also, what kind of shitty sister dates someone who relentlessly bullies her brother? That was never even mentioned

    Am I the only one who wasnt scared of this movie. I watched it in the theaters and found it so amazing as a kid, it has always been a comforting movie to me even to this day. Watching it after all these years made it way more enjoyable because now I'm able to understand and appreciate it in a way I couldnt before making it even more incredible to me then it already was. This movie and the book as well will forever be apart of me and mean a lot to me

      No, the last sin was added at around 14:12 , meaning it was a tiny bit over 14 minutes, but less than 15, so If a sin needs to be added for going over time, then it only needs to be one ☺

      Problem with adaptations is that it's making something from one medium act like it was made for another, which it isn't. Imagine a TV show that consists entirely of text to be more like a book. Or a videogame with no options to be more like a movie. It's what makes Alita Battle angel feel clunky and the first star trek movie drawn out.

    I took my older kid to watch this when it first came out. I remember thinking "well this is really a kid's movie for adults, huh".
    Later that night I met my younger kid's dad.
    Later still, I discovered that my former bestie was actually one of the monster actors in this.
    Odd couple of coincidences for me, my guy.

    I feel like I'm one of the few people that liked this movie. It's not a movie for kids, it's a movie about childhood. Yeah Max is selfish, but all little kids are. It's a representation of him trying to figure out the world and other people.

    As a kid i loved this movie and to this day i still do and now i finally know why, i have md (maladaptive daydreaming) and this movie reminds me of it, its about a kid who is unsatisfied with his life and escapes to his mind and lives in his daydreams with monsters who care and love for him, i was like this as a kid i was disconnected from reality and was unhappy with my life without even be old enough to understand that, i created a world in my head full of beautiful forests trails and roads, creatures big and small and castles filled with amazing people to meet who were my friends, and i loved this world and all the people in it with all my heart and soul but, i felt as if i had no connection or love for real life at all, i was so sad and miserable that the only thing that really brought me any happiness or any emotion at all really was being in this make believe world in my head just like this kid, i was able to get past this stage of my life but still struggle to fully immerse myself into real life without wanting to escape to my daydreams but ive gotten better at handing my md and love my life now, i can definitely honestly say this movie resonates with me and has always had a place in my heart truly this movie is a one of a kind masterpiece.

    Someone in school forgot the title of this movie and tried to describe it, and everyone thought he was crazy except me. That literally shows how insane this movie is.

    I absolutely despised this movie. Max needed mental help in this movie, which was NOT really what he was in the book.

      You know, as I think about it again, this movie reminded me of the therapist in What About Bob, who tried to use puppets to speak to his kids. This is the sort of movie a therapist would make or use to talk about emotional control.

    I watched this in theatre as a school trip, I don’t remember feeling scared. But uneasy how quickly Max and the other things emotions switched so quickly
