You can knit the brioche double decrease or brioche 4 stitch decrease, how it’s also called, in one color, two colors, or in the round - the technique is always the same.
To start the decrease, knit up to a position where you would normally k2tog a double stitch or brioche knit. When you are knitting in 2-colors or in the round, there will be rows where you p2tog these stitches and you can’t decrease in these rows - at least not with this technique. You always decrease in a k2tog row.
    1. First, slip a double stitch, and then the following single stitch knitwise to the right needle with the yarn in the back. Important, the yarn needs to be in the back. Usually, when you are knitting brioche your brain might subconsciously bring the yarn to the front. But for this part of the brioche double decrease, it absolutely needs to be in the back.
    2. Then, slip the next double stitch to a cable needle. If you don’t have a cable needle, you can also take a stitch marker or a stitch holder as you won’t use the cable needle to actually knit.
    3. This was the preparation, now you’ll start with the actual decreasing. Knit one stitch.
    4. Then, pass the stitch right next to it over it. This binds off the first stitch.
    5. Then, slip the remaining stitch back to the left needle
    6. And pass the double stitch next to it over it
    7. Slip the remaining stitch back to the right needle
    8. And slip the double stitch next to it over it as well
    9. And now, pick up your cable needle, and slip the stitches back to the left needle
    10. Then slip the first stitch on the right needle to the left needle
    11. And pass the double stitch over the first stitch
    12. And slip the remaining stitch back to the right needle and there is a decrease.
As an alternative, you can stagger the brioche double decrease across two rows and knit the br4st dec without a cable needle.
    1. First, knit up to a position where you have a single stitch (on the right side this will look like one the ridges) in the secondary color
    2. And then p3tog. The single stitch and one brioche knit
    3. Then, slip1 purlwise with yarn in front. Careful, no yarn over here.
    4. And then p3tog tbl. Normally I wouldn’t recommend doing a p3tog tbl because it’s a nightmare to knit. But as the brioche stitch is really lose, I feel it’s quite doable.
Before you purl them together, you need to slip the center stitch to the front.
    And then p3tog tbl
    5. Then, knit until you reach the decrease on the other side. Notice you will now be knitting in the second color.
And you knit a simple centered k3tog. So, slip the first two stitches knitwise at the same time. Knit one, and pass the slipped stitches over it.

I'm amazed at how simply you can describe what's going on to make a scary amount of steps seem so achievable! Thank you so much!

Oh my duck! Your ability to translate that jumbled whatever of yarn, stitches and movements into language that actually made sense to my one single tired braincell is amazing. I am awed.

Your method is quite a lot simpler--I am determined to master brioche before the year end, and this will help me with that a lot.

Hey julie, so so happy to hear you could make this work. It is a difficult stitch after all, if not the most difficult stitch of them all. So, be proud!

You did an excellent job of explaining this decrease. I was hoping you could explain Portuguese two-colored brioche and two-colored double knitting. I thought it would be easy, but I can’t wrap my head around how to go about it. The 2 yarns are held differently than traditional knitting so I end up giving up. I love Portuguese knitting, but it is hard to figure out how to use it on other methods. Thanks for the great content.

Ah..I do have to disappoint you there. I'm not really doing any Portuguese knitting 😢
