  • This chronicles the overland move of LVRR caboose the short distance from Jim Thorpe PA to Lehighton PA.
Jim Thorpe is the county seat of Carbon with lots of weekday traffic. It is also know as the Switzerland of Pennsylvania as the town is located in a picturesque gorge formed by the Lehigh River and attracts many tourists on weekends. The trip from Jim Thorpe to Lehighton requires climbing the steep road that accesses the town. The local authorities wanted the move to start no later than 7 am on a weekday to mitigate any traffic problems in the area.
Day one was used to prep the caboose for the move and load it on a lowboy trailer, the trucks were loaded on a second trailer. Because of the steep grades involved, blocking, bracing and tie down method was of extreme importance.
Day two started at the stroke of 7 am with the caravan leaving the municipal parking lot where the the two trailers were staged the prior day. The move went smoothly and much faster than originally planned for. The crane had been moved from Jim Thorpe the previous day and was in position and ready for the lift. A short section of track to accept the caboose had been constructed earlier in the month The caboose was in place before noon owing to the expertise and planning of the team. Hope you enjoy.

Man, I would not want to be the guy in charge of calculating the crane required for this lift although I knew guy who did that for a living. Kudos to the ground crew for taking a hell of a risk.

My grandfather, when only in his mid 20s (with 2 young kids to raise & support) was crushed at work when it fell on him, crushed his skull-- back in mid 1920s, RR gave his widow pension of $7 a month. Dangerous job!

I love a LV caboose. What’s in Lehighton?

It was home to the LVRR Packerton Yard. It was a major yard for the LV. Even though now its long gone, at one point it was a major hub for the LVRR. The CNJ also crossed over the yard and also used to have a connecting track into the yard before it was removed during the Conrail era. here is a video of today showing what's left of it th-cam.com/video/i9DfiWogUSs/w-d-xo.html

I was told they were looking for grants to restore it. I don't know if they plan to have it open for tours.

Nice job on this video, Pete. I started making TH-cam videos under my name about life on the railroad but they are not of your quality. Jerry Hoare

Take it from a retired railroad career man: The wheel sets of the caboose are identified as "trucks", not "bogies". Besides the spelling for bogies is not boogies (the latter is something you pick out your nose.
