  • In this video, I share my experiment with shading my dahlias to protect them from the scorching summer heat. As a flower farmer, I've struggled to get my dahlias to bloom properly in the hot weather, so I decided to try something new. Join me as I take you through the process of setting up shade over my dahlias and the results that followed. I also share some tips and tricks on how to care for dahlias during the summer months. So if you're a flower farmer or gardener dealing with the summer heat, this video is a must-watch!
Time for OPERATION SAVE THE DAHLIAS! I've been told I need to provide afternoon shade for these lovely flowers to get them to bloom correctly here in the south. We'll put up the shade cloth, and give it a month or two to see if it makes a difference.

Here in Australia we know that shadecloth is magic for growing vegetables and flowers in the summer heat. It make a HUGE difference. TIP: If you need to slide shadecloth up and down use steel curtain split rings just a bit bigger than your pipes.

The society of Georgia has a list of heat tolerant dahlias for southern gardeners. They have a website. It's color coded and even includes which dahlias won't open in the center due to heat, which are easiest to grow, etc. It's very helpful :)

You made a great point about the dahlias in the south. I’m in Houston and my dahlias have that yellow center and they look wilted even tho I water everyday. I’m gonna move them around cuz those poor things can’t handle our strong sun.

I took a class on growing dahlias from a group of northern Florida growers and I’m in 8b southern Alabama. I use grow bags and don’t need to shade them. I’m a hobbyist but have over 75 varieties that I’m growing successfully. I don’t think it’s worth it on a profitability standpoint. I do it because I love it.

I'm in Troy, AL zone 8 and it is definitely hot. I have three in a flower bed and they all have the blown out centers (I thought that was normal, lol) and three more that haven't bloomed yet in pots. I'm going to try to get them moved to a better location. Thanks so much for sharing! I had no idea!

I can't remember the name of the clamps, but you get them at a hardware store to hold things together when building, or glueing things together, they would work to hold the shade cloth on then you only have to roll up the side you want to cut. Third time is the charm.

Next year try starting them early, you want them to bloom before the extreme heat sets in, they prefer a climate with cool summer nights, for the south that’s more like late spring, they definitely can’t take full sun in the south, next year try planting where they get morning sun

Congratulations, Jessie! Your dahlias look great! It is also way too hot to grow dahlias here in California. My dahlias didn’t bloom until late October last year. This year, I took a local flower expert’s advice to grow dahlias in a part-shade corner of the yard. My dahlias aren’t growing as tall as they do in the sun, but they’re blooming in June! I’ll take that! Great to hear about your flower farm successes!

I have heard that consistently open Dahlia centers means too much nitrogen (if they open to the center right away on the stalk, as opposed to being older blooms)....would be worth adjusting fertilizers! Congrats on the Dahlias!!!!

@@45jessiemad Once I thought they were difficult to grow but have since found they're not at all. Some tubers I threw out grew on my compost heap & some come up every year on a rock pile on the edge of a gum forest at my place, while some tubers even struggled up after I threw out the rejects from tuber dividing under a tree & subsequently mowed over them.
