@@DerekPower Great picks! I definitely mean to do something on Aphex Twin's ambient albums and on Godspeed, so that's coming up for sure. Just a question which script presents itself first. Many thanks for your recommendations, appreciate it lots!

At the age of 17, via the small ads of the NME I applied to be in Sonic Boom's post spacemen band. His manager hooked me up with lift from two Hawkwind fans. My interview was in a darkened room with a big clash poster. He seemed, medicated. We talked about ambient music (eno and aphex twin) and he spoke about howling wolf and bo diddley. I love both. I promised to send a tape of me playing but didn't end up doing so. Looking back it's probably the best thing that happened to me NOT, getting involved with that scene at that age.

No matter how it all panned out, it must've been awesome for your teenage self to have met Sonic. Amazing story either way, you paint a very vivid picture. Thanks for sharing!

At 21, I joined Alphastone on drums with Pete Bassman of Spacemen 3 and the darkside. Played for 4 years making records ,gigging and some tours with The Silver apples, Mirrabilia , and went on to work with Rosco (ex spacemen/darkside) and I've recorded with Will caruthers also an ex spacemen (oh there he is in the video now lol)
Currently i am living in Brazil and occasionally bumping into Alphastone/spacemen/spiritualized fans in South America, which blows my mind. ❤

I imagine that this would have been the album Rob Fleming/Gordon would have listened to numerous times. I myself took it at face value and related to the heartbreak elements. In fact, the last third or so of “Cop shoot cop” is what I felt many a night after an intimate relationship ending.
As a composer/writer/creator, I get less and less and less interested in viewing works as “autobiographical” or somehow a character I create is “me”. Yes, your work is informed by your experience. But I found that the best creators understand that the work has to be bigger and much more than just them. If Jason Pierce made it purely autobiographical, it would come off as a self-indulgent solipsistic exercise. But the reason why that album was relatable is that it just tapped into those sentiments in a direct and potent manner. Sure circumstances may have encouraged it, but Jason wanted to grow as a musician/songwriter/producer. You have to take that leap as it were … to reach for the stars.
Interestingly enough, the phrase “Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space” comes from the book Sophie’s World. In context, it describes what philosophers see and how they describe it to everyone else, who thinks it’s kinda weird.
    I’ll see what I can suggest =]

It is an album about coping with a break-up, and, provided it is Pierce's work and live - this implies it is absolutely going to be an album about a lot of drug use. Don't overcomplicate things, sometimes it's just that easy.

In cop shot cop, the stanza of “there’s a hole in my arm” is actually from John Prine’s “Sam Stone”. I never picked that up until now!
My theory is that not only is that this is about drugs/love, but this is the forming of his new identity. Marked by his ex opening the album, the line shows that there is no going back once he’s made the realization that he can’t go back.
Also could you do a video on Pinback? Your videos are dope so I trust in whatever you put out!

@@AlbumAffairs I did catch spiritualized on the sunday night of glastonbury 94, wandered right down the front, folk used to leave late on sunday for work on the monday, tripping on black pentagrams from the traveller's field,
I've never been in such an amazing place, there's only one song on youtube, I think i may have grabbed the camera boom and got elevated into the air causing the disruption of the recording.
