In Praise of Boards of Canada's Most Underrated Album
After releasing the two highly acclaimed albums “Music Has the Right to Children” and "Geogaddi," in 1998 and 2002 respectively, Boards of Canada had made a huge impact on electronic music, spawning countless imitators and inspiring pretty much everyone else.
But in 2005, with the release of their third album, “The Campfire Headphase,” Boards of Canada surprised everyone when they all of a sudden ditched their trademark sound in favor of acoustic elements, traditional song structures, and more of an uplifting tone.
They jokingly called it their “first official pop record”, and ever since, it has become kind of the black sheep in their discography, dividing both critics and fans alike.
In this video, we’ll take a closer look at what might be Boards of Canada’s most misunderstood and underrated work, “The Campfire Headphase.” Why was it divisive? What influenced this change in mood? And what’s the meaning of the campfire?
