Something I dont hear discussed much on pump shotguns in the home is the space you need to operate the action. There are certain door/hall configurations that make it impossible to cover a hallway and cycle the action. You really need to also train to find these sorts of problems so you dont find out in the moment.
@destroyerkuroshiokai this is why some prefer auto or break action shotguns for home defense. Not only do you have to train, but you also have to find out what design you feel more comfortable with. Not to mention you have to take barrel length into account. You see, the house i live in doesn't really have hallways, plus I'm used to pump actions. Vang Comp does their barrel work differently if you are using Federal Flight control ammo as the wad/cup doesn't play well with the regular porting. Their standard drastically improves the cheaper, more common loads.
@@Born2doom I snagged a mint 590A1 Retrograde from a dude at work for 3 bills. I love that damn thing, put a salty Aimpoint pro on it and it’s a proper work gun.
My first experience with Van Comp came after the outfit I worked for refitted their 870s with 14 inch tubes. Qualification included accounting for all the pellets from Federal 00 buck in a Q target along with the slugs. Anyway, while we might see a couple of pellet fliers with an 18-inch cylinder bore barrel, patterns with 14-inch guns we all over the place. We were shooting buck at 10-15 yards at the time. The barrels got shipped to Hans Van for his barrel treatment. We didn’t get the porting, but his magic performed on the barrel made the patterns tighten up tremendously. We the adopted a Remington 8-pellet reduced recoil. Slug accuracy also improved. Yeah, I’d heartily recommend Van Comp for anyone relying on a shotgun for various scenarios. The Federal Flight Control 00 buck is even more impressive, even out of a regular cylinder bore 18-inch.
Fun fact. The Ithaca 37 is a copy of the Remington 17. The Remington 17 was only made in 20 gauge. Ithaca took that design and scaled it up to 12 gauge. Also the browning bps is also a Remington 17 scaled up.

Military toying with 14.5/16/18 in barrel lengths for 6mm arc. Sig MCX LT has a barrel for 6arc not for civilians yet "dont know length". and some swat, along with hunters, running 12.5. It's all personal preference and application. like asking whats the best 5.56, or .308, barrel length.
I second the belt feds, I would watch that whole thing. Also put the MG-42 in there. It hasn't seen much use ever since WW2, sure, but is a legendary belt fed and I believe it would be a travesty if it wasn't in a video like that. It has a nutty fire rate, making the m60 feel like a semi automatic
I have my dad's 870 wingmaster he bought in the late sixties. It runs like a Swiss clock, my son and I use it quite a bit every duck and deer season. I'm still using his 1100 he bought in the early 70's, it's been upgraded with a custom marsh paint job, and I must say it looks pretty bad ass.
@@CiviTacand the fact that when the ejector breaks you can replace it without sending it to a gun smith. They do not break often but they do. It simply out performs the 870 *in my opinion.* Either way, Garand Thumb for Assistant Vice President. 🇺🇲
Love me a pump shotgun. When I was a kid, I got a hand me down, Sears Ted Williams 12 ga pump. A couple of years later, my Dad got my cousin and I a pair of Remington 1100s. Shot mine two times and gave it back to him. Told him I was happier with the pump, and he just smiled and told me ok
870 is the second best. The 590A1 is the best. Vang Comp calls it "The Standard" for a reason. Plus, Tang safety is vastly superior to cross bolt safety.
My 870 broke after 800shells. Do Not get any 870 made from 2012-2024. This "new" 870 is using the schematics altered from the original. They are made to cut costs. Old 870s are made based on the original design, over built specs.
Ithaca M37 says: "hold up wait a minute something ain't right." I'll hold up the Ithaca M37 against any Rem 870, Mos 500, or SPAS 12. Also has a longer history with military and police by about 20 years, and was used in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and the movie Terminator :)

I was on your side til you brought up “look back at history”. TH-cam videos are entertainment, not history. But I agree with your point, the videos were funnier and more entertaining with Micah & Charlie……in my humble opinion
I disagree completely, Charlie’s shtick gets old fast and Micah is doing his own thing and didn’t add much to the videos IMO. Been watching GT for years and he was always solo and doesn’t need a group of clowns bantering back and forth.
Theyre not the only one splitting from him... speaking of, i wonder if his soon to be Ex is looking for an actual trad dad because she is beautiful for a momma
did most of my 1:1 training with a 870... it gets real hard to reload and clear jams in low light/dark. The one have have was a cheapo 300 dollar express with a police barrel and it just keeps going no matter what. Only issue i ever had was extraction during break in period. Now its all good.
And if I tuned into the channel for fatherly, life, or husband advice I'd care about that, but I'm here for firearms. GT talks about firearms and doesn't attack his fans which is increasingly common among media creators to do.

The best pump action shotgun still lost to the 590A1
Scatterguns are beautiful
Shotguns are like shovels, they work and are badass,
Dude looks like he’s straight out of the COD4 campaign
You can't escape the flannel, the flannel alway finds you
I'm proud of you kiddo. I'd be prouder if you'd joined the Marines like a boy, oorah, but nobody's perfect and you're doing your best.
Old school GT is outstanding, keep up the great work!
I like how we are going back to the older style of he’s show
I’m glad we don’t have Poochie ruining these clips anymore
This hurt to read.
Beretta 1301 Langdon Tactical & Panzer M4 Speed Pro are my favorite shotguns. Both M4 clones, one expensive one not so much, both GREAT semi shotguns
❤
Flannel Daddy returns to the bench! It's come full-circle.
Definitely came.
Police Trade In 870 Wingmaster is my favorite shotgun. $250, refinished the wood, replaced the magazine spring and follower, done. Bombproof HD gun.
Fun fact. The Ithaca 37 is a copy of the Remington 17. The Remington 17 was only made in 20 gauge. Ithaca took that design and scaled it up to 12 gauge. Also the browning bps is also a Remington 17 scaled up.
I love the velcro on the side of the receiver of the shotgun very simple, and slick!!
Bro carrying the mini shottygun velcro things is awesome --would have never thought of that as a "reload" option with multiable in mind to interchange and what not. Very cool will copycat.
My son (12) picked up a rifle at a gun raffle, and promply told the owner of said rifle the optic was on backwards.....he was right
Please do videos on the following:
-Shotgun Mud test
-Battle of the Belt feds-Which is better, the PKM, M249, MCR FiteLite, RPD, M240B?
-Different barrel lengths for 6mm ARC, and which is best.
-How good are mini shotgun shells vs 2 3/4?
-Invite all the GunTubers you can to Idaho with a rifle that they would take into combat and have them run drills and compete with each other to see which rifle set up would work best.
I second the mud test
Garand thumb sold me fent
My 870 was the first firearm I ever purchased. All the rounds after 18 years and its still running great.
Cmon now. Not giving the mossberg any love
He has done a Mossberg video
I do prefer the mossy controls
Yeah the 870 had a shell hang up in the 100 yard he had to reach up and knock it loose
@@CiviTacand the fact that when the ejector breaks you can replace it without sending it to a gun smith.
They do not break often but they do.
My New 20Fieldmaster ran 178 rounds and broke at the spot-weld and had to go back. Took 9 weeks to comeback. Really disappointed I had to pay shipping back for the mo fix it.
My wallet prefers the Berg.
590A1 over all pumps. Can’t beat the true best
no
Wrong.
Mike, I appreciate you going back to the basics and the 'black box' type of videos. Life is life and we'll all get past the internet chatter...
This was the weirdest mossberg ad ever?
I use to be a gold prospector in BC Canada. I killed 2 Mossberg shotguns and a cheap Turkish shotgun which was my first. I switched to the remignton 870 MCS with the short barrel and interchangeable pistol grip/butt stock. I've had that shotgun for 10 years now thousands of shells through it zero failures. However I replaced the extractor with a Volquartsen one other than that shes stock.
People say they miss Micah, but honestly, the channel is noticeably more similar to the original GT vids that everyone fell in love with. You guys are just 16 year old summerfags that barely started watching in the past couple of years.
Additionally, Micah does his own thing, and it's not bad either. It's like we have two good channels now instead of just one.
I have an 870 Police Magnum (pre Freedom Group) with a Scattergun Technologies (yes, that's right) barrel. Love it! I have a Mossy 590A1 with a tiny bit of action "slicking" but pretty much out of the box. Love it more. It simply out performs the 870 *in my opinion.*
Either way, Garand Thumb for Assistant Vice President. 🇺🇲
SORRY BROTHER... THE BEST PUMP ITS MOSSBERG 590A1
We ain't talking a bone stock 870. Once it's gone through the Vang Comp shop, it's a whole different beast.
Nothing against the previous style of videos but I definitely missed the more serious/informational GT.
This made me pregnant
LMAO 😅😅😅😅
Love me a pump shotgun. When I was a kid, I got a hand me down, Sears Ted Williams 12 ga pump. A couple of years later, my Dad got my cousin and I a pair of Remington 1100s. Shot mine two times and gave it back to him. Told him I was happier with the pump, and he just smiled and told me ok
870 is the second best. The 590A1 is the best. Vang Comp calls it "The Standard" for a reason. Plus, Tang safety is vastly superior to cross bolt safety.
It's called The Standard because that particular model, the 764, is the bare minimum
The things beautiful. Shotguns are works of art.
Nice to see a return to original format, hope some of the "deadly" series comes back as well as more gear reviews... As for 870 it was shotgun i used when working in armoured car...870 is a beast!
What other pump action does garand daddy know about
@@johndecker9983 waaahh
I love that this og video format is back.
This is one thing Garand Thumb has first hand experience and knowledge in, pumping, so listen up.
Sent my 870 off to vang comp 20 plus years ago. It sat in the trunk of my car for 20 years. The system works.
I love GrandThumb as a person and a channel, but I seriously feel like the channel has and is taking a dive since the crew split up. These are the moments in history where we will look back and realize how good we had it and didn't appreciate it until it was gone.
Could benefit from having guests on. Some back and forth banter would help bring some of that dynamic back.
@@petergozinya6122hate to burst ur bubble but literally anything that has happened and is over is history including this comment.
Reading the comments I have no idea or care about the Drama. What I am loving is the return of daddy flannel classic video
And if I tuned into the channel for fatherly, life, or husband advice I'd care about that, but I'm here for firearms. GT talks about firearms and doesn't attack his fans which is increasingly common among media creators to do.
@@canadianpatriot2498proof he cheated? Because both exes claimed there was no cheating. Are you calling them both liars?

@@canadianpatriot2498 How much of that is internet speculation? Because it seems like most of it. Profiles that looked like memes made by redditors....... Obviously there is an element of truth to it, but the best lies are.
@@canadianpatriot2498 professional vs private life. I know trades people, military, business people that professional basis that are top of their fields. I will deal with them. I seldom care about their personal life drama because I’m not involved nor do I seek to be involved. So without knowing either sides stories I’m not judging or assuming any facts on a TH-camrs life. I’ll keep enjoying his content, dry humour, and new and interesting firearms.
That action is smooth like 🧈🤌🇺🇲
I've been watching your videos for a while and I want to say as a non-veteran that I thank you Mike for your service and protecting our 2A right.
If Taran Butler can outlive his....Precious....Moment, GT will be plenty fine 😊
😂😂😂
Ill do ANYTHING for a shotgun v drone video
@10:30 Will you choke intensely?
Hey Mike,
I really enjoy your vids. (especially the 106 yo Colt 1911)
w/e goes on in your private, is exactly that; private and none of anyone's damn business imo.
In my 50+ years on this fine mudball, I've learned that anyone that's eager to point a finger at someone; has either a dent in the bucket and/or some dark skeletons to hide themselves.
but enough of that blabber.
that pumpy is a beaut!
looking forward to the next.
Awesome Mike, great video.
I prefer the action of the remington and the manual of arms of the mossberg. Both, like you said, incredible firearms.
The silence is deafening
