I bought a wrecked 2024 911 Porsche GT3RS that hit some trees before being fully submerged underwater. After i picked up the car i realised it didnt come with any keys so we cant test to see if anything works in the car. But then the previous owner reached out to me & told us some information that we needed to hear!

This is one of those cars that nobody else can rebuild. You're not in this for profit from the car, you're doing it for profit from the videos. I'll happily sit through 20 videos of you figuring this one out so I vote fix it. You know you'll do it!
Agreed!

Matt, in poland there is a company that rebuilds porsche engines, main customers are from middle east and asia, they rebuilt gt3 flood dameged like yours from Malysia, they used cnc machine, made cillinders bigger and put new sleevs inside. It was in the price of one head
YES MATT, THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED
Let’s hope Matt see this 👏👏

When someone rebuilds an engine not for its monetary value but for the love of it, it reflects true passion and dedication. It's an act of preserving craftsmanship, honouring a piece of history, or simply reveling in the joy of creating something functional from the worn and broken. Your effort is a testament to the idea that not everything of worth is measured in dollars and cents-sometimes, it's about the journey, the learning, and the personal connection. That kind of passion deserves recognition and admiration. Best wishes. looking forward to this build.
Very eloquently put, you're absolutely correct.
i read like 12 words of that and had to take a nap.
It is for monetary value, he’s making more from the video then the engine will cost. He’s rebuilding it for views and money don’t kid yourself. It is cool to see though and glad there’s a way to recover the costs otherwise it would end up at the scrap yard.
@@TheOriginalLugnuts Well said... Eye Surgery is sadly either deluding himself or simply doesn't understand the revenue generation matrix of youtube. Mat makes no money over the medium term from buying and repairing crashed sports cars - who wants to spend big bucks on something that was cobbled together by people with no official expertise. In fact, judging by how many of the cars he ends up keeping, he makes huge losses, including on the replacement parts he uses. Conversely, he makes loads of cash from filming his endeavours and upping videos onto this channel and his mkII offering. That's the business model that EyeSurgery has evidently failed to grasp. The more tension, the greater the drama and thus the more advertising revenue a rebuild likes this brings in... So, everything is in fact worth a measured amount of dollars and cents and click-throughs. Sorry to remove your rose-tinted glasses and replace them with wrinkly green ones....But that's not to say Mat isn't great at what he does - he's by far the best of his kind. But eulogizing of a lump of metal to find meaning to life misses the huge cash revenue this channel generates every single month - way more than a battered and bathed GT3 RS is ever worth.
Hey mat, I’m an engine builder,
I did an f10 m5 engine that was completely flooded a couple months ago, same situation. You will definitely need a block otherwise the cylinder will start to score and it will eat a lot of oil. Some machine shops can sleeve aluminum blocks by cutting in and inserting a sleeve.
Don’t forget to get all of the valves grinded and polished. You will have low compression If you don’t.
The oil pump will have a lot of water inside of it. I recommend taking it apart to completely drain and clean it because water will wipe out the bearings first thing.
On my engine the corrosion actually ate into my heads a little bit so I had to take them to the machine shop to get them decked. So make sure if you have any corrosion or rust spots that your head surfaces are straight. Otherwise everything else it just taking apart, cleaning, replacing seals and gaskets, putting back together.
Good luck
Yeah, you're spot on there. When it comes to aluminum block cylinders, they usually have coatings like Alusil or Nikasil because aluminum is soft and wears out extremely quickly. The coating is very strong, however once that coating gets even a tiny bit damaged, it's basically game over for the cylinders-they start to degrade super fast. If there's corrosion, that lining is toast. Sleeving might seem like a fix but it's tough to nail the precise tolerances even for the best shops, and often doesn't hold up-ends up either wearing out too quickly or just doesn't fit right. Plus, it messes with how the engine handles heat. Really, the only surefire fix is swapping out the block.
They looks like there's plenty of material for sleeves imo
Yep, get the valves *ground
If it's not Alusil (based on the rust, I would have thought not) which I've heard is a nightmare to oversize and not have oil consumption issues, then would it not be cast iron sleeves of some sort with Nikasil? Can be bored/honed and re coated.
@@matthewcadle2328 it's an aluminium block with Nikasil coating. Alusil is what BMW use to cast their blocks - silicon impregnated aluminium.
Hi Mat - I'm an IT-Tech. About your ECU... I would advise against drying it and putting power to it. The gunk in it can still be conductive and cause a short and then burn it out. I would suggest to use an ultrasonic bath at 60°C with an 20/80 ratio of Isopropyl and distilled water for 20 minutes and then to put it into a closed box with at least 80% Isopropyl to get most of the distilled water back out (for an hour or more).. Then let it dry again. That would give you a bigger chance of saving the ECU and other components😉 And about the block - you've invested a lot of money so far, how much would you need to invest to find out if the gearbox and electrics work is the question - if it's "only the block" + rebuild - I would go for it🙂 Wish you the best of good luck and wanna see it drive again 😁 Greetings from Germany!
For ultrasonic bath i strongly recommend special solution. It recovers all oxides, cleans well, widely used here in repair shops to wash notebooks motherboards after water damage. But after that you should wash it off completely with distilled water, completely! Here in russia it is available under 'Solins US' name. I believe you can find something similar in your local shops. After that solution every copper region looks like very fresh copper, no oxides
don’t use ultrasonic on components like ECUs, the ultrasonic waves can damange certain components, ICs contain mechanical silicon structures, and placing them in an ultrasonic cleaner will often destroy these structures these also applys to transformers, crystals …
The best thing to do is use 100% isopropyl alcohol and rinse it, afterwards dry it with compressed air :)
Greeting from Italy 😊
@matamstrong
@@laurinmair9833I mean in edge cases on high with hyper sensitive stuff, but an ECU? Ultrasonics are pretty standard in electronics repair for PCBs, tho usually it's better to risk damage slightly than not having another option to get under ICs in the case of conductive-liquid damage/submersion. Can't just brush it off if it got under an IC

Your dad is the best, his expressions are hilarious, you are lucky to be working everyday with him, doing what you both love doing. My dad died from an aorta that ruptured back in 1994, i was only 23. He taught me a lot about being an honest, hard working adult. My dad and grandpa taught me how to work on car's, and everything else you could use a kid for free labor back in the day lol. I miss them, but watching you work together brings back some good memories.
I'm down fot awhile, because i had knee replacement surgery on the 25th, and the surgeon didn't get it through his head when i told him that an MRI from 2018 showed a cyst in the tibia, probably from the ACL reconstruction, and other surgeries i had back in 09 from a work accident. I also told the guy the same MRI showed a ganglion cyst behind my knee, which he kept trying to tell me was a baker's cyst, two totally different thing's. Anyway, he says it should take 45 minutes or less to fix. More than 3 hour's later, the dr. says it went okay, and he would talk to me the next day. Hi PA came in with him, started to talk about the surgery, and he cuts her off, and says it was a mess in there, and that's all i know, because he changed the subject to the nerve block pump, and some knee exercises. They came in early to take some blood tests, and were giving me i.v. antibiotics to for some reason. I felt sick after having the surgery, and kinda light headed, but went home. I started feeling worse, the stuff in the nerve block pump was making me really feel worse, so i called the company, who said to shut it down, and remove the catheter. I went to the hospital app, and looked up the blood tests they did before, and after surgery, and was really pissed. My rbc, haemoglobin, hematocrit, and cbc were all on the low side, my hemoglobin dropped by 5 point's, which means i lost a lot of blood from that surgery. My white blood count was normal before surgery, and was really high afterwards. I'm taking antibiotics for some of nd of infection they told me nothing about. The dr. also said the incision would be around 3 inches, but yesterday, i took the wrap off the dressing, and i have a huge ass incision, it's about 10-12 inches long. Tomorrow, somebody better tell me something, because we had Thanksgiving over here in the state's, i have been waiting to call and find out what the heck happened during the 3 hour's i was knocked out.
This video has helped get my mind off this whole mess i have going on. The two guy's in the wreck are lucky they weren't hurt bad, or worse. I think you will get this sorted, and be driving a car on the bucket list. Your laugh cracks me up everytime, you always keep looking towards a solution, and that's how you get stuff done.
G-d bless from a lady in Michigan, USA.

29:01 send it. It’s your dream car, screw it.
Pyro fuse blown is a good sign. It acts as a main power shutoff to any downstream electrical components including all of the other fuses in the main block. The fact that you have continuity in the other fuses is actually good news as it shows that the pyro fuse did it's job and cut power to the car before the water could cause shorts or other damage to the rest of the electrical systems. If those other fuses had popped, then you would have cause for concern.
I was about to say exacly that, thats correct. most likely the electronics will be fine as long they remove and clean any rust if present, before turning it on
Exactly!
Agreed, was confused why he was upset at that moment. Showed the electrics in the car should be good. Plus, It was in fresh water, not salt water.
I fully agree, that was my first thoughts aswell
Depends on the manufacturer. With the blue porsche they managed to start it even with a blown pyro fuse by push starting it, since it cut power only to the starter
This is so epic!
The car in the air, airbags, two trees, the motor was off before the water, all in 2 second mid air. Mat you're amazing.
Love Mat`s positive videos, too much negativity in the world. Very uplifting. Great stuff.
The skills you keep acquiring are amazing. It used to be replacing a panel or a sub frame and putting massive wheels and a straight exhaust on it. (Which is not trivial for most people). Now you are stripping and building a Porsche engine. Legendary.
The jump cuts between US and UK are just great. So much fun.
Here’s my two cents: at the end of the day, all of this is fixable, and I’m confident you can get it running if you commit to it 100%. BUT, no matter what you do, the car’s longevity has already been significantly compromised. Even the tiniest speck of dust can cause issues over time-much sooner than what a standard Porsche would typically endure.
Don’t forget how much electricity and water don’t mix. submerged underwater for that long is a serious problem. Once you start using it and subjecting it to stress-hot and cold cycles-it’s going to face some serious electrical issues.
These cars are engineered to a micro level, and taking that engine apart is an enormous risk. I don’t know-turning it into a coffee table seems like the way to go. But then again, for content, it’s absolutely amazing! Your videos are incredible, and whoever edits them deserves major credit-the retention on these videos is some of the best I’ve ever seen on TH-cam.
That said, I feel like the satisfaction you’re expecting from a GT3 RS at the end might not quite match the reality with this one. Either way, good luck-I’m sure you’ll make it work!

Hi Mat, the cylinders can have the coating stripped chemically and then to be recoated, you don't have deep scoring. That is the procedure for motorcycle cylinders that are scored. You are very lucky, UK has the companies to do this process. Good luck!
This is the way to go, dont listen to that nonsense of drilling the block to install new sleeves, aluminum and steel expand and contract at different temperatures, that repair will not work for alusil coated engines. Just look at M539 engine rebuild nightmares with the Alpina B7 Project Chicago.

this is by far the most impressive build I've ever seen on youtube, 2 cars from two countries where you don't even live! Amazing content as always Mat!
Mat, you can re-sleeve any engine with aluminium liners. Aluminium liners seal better and are used to get more power primarily.
true but if it was running at all when sucking in water it almost certainly hydro-locked and bent the rods/maybe damaged crank, practically building a new engine at that point...

Go to Hartech in the UK they do lots of machining work and rebuilding porsche engines so you could maybe even go to a 4.2L engine. they do similar stuff compared to DeMan in the US, I'm personally using LN engineering in the US for my GT4 engine rebuild I'm currently doing going to a 4.25L engine which its getting bored and I'm putting a stroker crankshaft and it has a pretty similar block comparted to the gt3 and Matt timing the engine is super simple you use the special tools to lock the camshafts on one side, then put the crankshaft at u 3/6 then you bolts those cams down then turn the engine over 1 time to u 3/6 again then bolt down the cams on the other side.
One advantage of going that route (i.e. boring out the block), is you’ll get rid of all the issues in the cylinders, then the block gets coated with Nikasil which basically brings the cylinders back to new. It’s likely more expensive than a new block, *but* the possibilities are pretty enticing.
@@thejackamo yeah and he only would need to change the pistons as the titanium rods dont need to be replaced when doing these kinds of rebuilds DeMan re-uses the rods for the 4.5L cars they build, I've personally worked on a 4.5L 992 gt3 and that thing was mad.
@ used to own one of the first 4.5 GT4s made, absolute riot of a power plant. Rick’s since done some 991.2 RSes and 992 GT3s, so I think he’d be really interested in getting a motor out of a 992 RS in the shop

It is so well written. It looks very natural but the 'back to the US' location switch jokes reveal very clever scripting. Which makes this such a joy to watch (and I'm not even into wrecked car rebuilds much).
Well, due to the extensive damage (basically every panel on the car + the fact that it was submerged in water) this car is the perfect opportunity not to REBUILD it, but to BUILD it...
Fix the engine, tune it and put a fully custom body on the car that will make it truly unique…
This car will never be worth the same as one with a clean title (tho), not even as a car that has had a minor/moderate accident, even if you repair it to factory condition + the damage is extensively documented on TH-cam, once fixed, I personally wouldn't never bought this car even if the price was greatly reduced due to the intensity of the damage.
This makes this car perfect for a custom build.
Mr. Armstrong you are a genius and your father smiles because he knows it ! Cheers mate story telling at its best with no major studio or script ! You’re going big places and Mr. Hammond knows it ! Go to the top Matt !!!!!!
Have you heard of or considered using Hartech?
They have rebuilt early 997 engines which were susceptible to "bore score".
They remove material from the block and install sleeves to make up for the lost metal.
Good luck.
Good call! Was about to post this myself 🎉. Hartech are up near Bolton UK and been Porsche Engine builders for a long time.
Awesome that you can get the key(s). I can't imagine the nightmare if you had to go through Porsche. My dad owned one back in the 80's and he couldn't even get an appointment with a tech unless greasing someone 100 bucks.
Send the engine out to the machine shop. They can bore out the cylinders and put in slightly larger pistons. Bigger cylinder and piston = larger displacement = more power😊
This!!!!
its not going to be alot bigger.
just a oversize piston
There is no room for alot bigger
Hi Mat! I'm 11 years old , I am from Romania and I am a big fan!
Me too brother, Hello from Romania! 🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴
I hope you are getting all the technical terms being used in the video
You could probably get work in a wind tunnel
Rebuild it , even if it isn’t worth it , contents gonna be crazy , views will go over the roof 👌🏻
I love it when Matt is like, 'OMG! What have I done?!', and Tony is just cackling away at him in the background! 😂
I saw the video lately. but I would suggest heating up the engine with water utilizing the engine water pocket. Applying light engine oil "5w-15w" or transmission oil for the manual into each cylinder. allow it to set for some time then gently prime the engine by turning clockwise and counterclockwise.
you are not right about those fuses... if they were blown it meant that something in circuit was shorted (for example by water) so good fuses is GOOD for you because it tells you that pyro fuse done its job fast enough...
pyro fuse only cuts power to the starter, not the other electronics
@@adityapatki1693Wrong
Pyro fuse inhibits the starting of a car "after " the incident, not during.
Fuses will not blow when under water either!!! 😊
@@alancraig248 Wrong.
A pyrofuse shuts off all electrical power in a vehicle, not just the power to the starter:
How it works
When a vehicle detects a signal, it generates an ignition current that activates the pyrofuse. This causes an explosive charge to push a piston downward, which cuts through an aluminum strip and disconnects the battery system.
Hi Matt, your Porsche rebuild inspires me! Your Audi TT journey fuels my passion. Thank you for empowering us!
sybau
Now that you basically got a skeleton of a GT3 you can go anywhere with this project, like others have mentioned it wont be profitable for anyone but it would make one hell of a youtube series. Really hope you could turn this into some insane and 1 of a kinda GT3RS.
If even you fail to rebuild this, keep the spirit and your smile in every videos, one thing that you and your dad have that priceless for me to watch
So many hate comments about how he does things 😂😂😂 he has rebuilt cars most of us will never be able to afford, yet people think they know better. Keep up the good work bro, love the content🎉
It’s sad to say don’t matter what you do there will always be haters
I’ve waited 14 days in suspense for this😂 Let’s go
Commit
Me too pal.
28:19 The laugh of pain
Thinking and hearing all the walls preventing you to finish this built, just made me think this was not the hardest neither the most expensive one you had on your garage. I vote go for it to get it fix and better than it was before. Go Mat!
Get the block and pistons etc to a quality engineer and get them to rebore and coat the barrels and exchange for replacement pistons and rods. Could come nicely under the cost of a replacement block etc.
Yea I'm sure that's repairable by the right people and possibly at a fraction of the new block cost.
rebore doesn't work cause of the coating.
yeah , was thinking the same , rebore, coat, larger pistons, forged rods and he'll get more power and save some money.
@@rickylefleur2158 why not?
This job can be done (and also was already done) in Germany where I life, check out e.g. "JP Performance"
If I were building this GT3, I’d turn it into a track-only car, focusing on making it as lightweight and performance-oriented as possible. First, I’d rebuild the engine by increasing the bore diameter and upgrading the pistons, as suggested in the comments. Then, I’d install a roll cage for safety and strip out all unnecessary parts, like headlights, interior trims, and carpets. This would reduce both weight and costs, and I could even sell the removed parts to make some extra money. Since it's a track-only car, it wouldn’t need to be registered with the DVLA, and it could be used in any country for its intended purpose. If everything goes as planned, this could turn into an epic rebuild.
I think that's a great plan tbf!
It’s all GOLD content, TH-cam will cover the costs.
Bore it and sleeve it. If the pistons are ok, new rings and bearings.
I enjoyed watching you rebuild your GT3 and the roller coasters you went through to get that done but in the end the smile and satisfaction was worth the effort I’m hoping you rebuild this RS but from a budget standpoint I can definitely see where you’re coming from
You can bore it out and recoat it we do it al the time after a cilinder blows out with the high end racing scooters that run at 14.000 rpm its an nicasil coating thats sprayd on
Much love from Kenya 🇰🇪, love how you're never put down by every challenge you find
We mzee😂,this guy is something else with cars

Hi Matt, The main fuse is the only one that's meant to go. Long haul rebuild only because the water etched into the block. You can do it however when you rebuild get the pro tools, do not rely on your paint marks! Great show. Cheers
Your dad is brilliant, so good at solving difficult problems, my family watch your videos every day, we like to know where you sell cars and hot much
Bore it out & put stronger rods & pistons in it Mat. It’s not like it’s gonna have any sort of warranty so build something unique.
I always believe in your skills, big thumbs from portugal. 🇵🇹💪🏾
🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Man flew from the UK to the US back to the UK back to the US back to the UK back to the US just for a 2 minute segment in the video, the commitment is top quality, well done Matt
No he didnt mate. He edited t to make it seems so.

You bought a car submerged in water! You’ve committed to the build, the cost and then the joys of driving the gt3 rs at the end! Get it purchased 🙌🏼
This is the ONLY time i have seen Mat even a little bit shaken, dude never flinches.
And this time it is beyond warranted, Mat god speed to you on this build man. Sending you good vibes on whatever you decide, we will all be here for it.
✌️❤️
Wow, this is insane! Do more like this!
15:47 Nice of you to mention other small creators
Thought the same thing hahaha
Mat if you’ve gone this far it’s blindingly obvious that you’ll buy the block so you can keep the rebuilding story alive and well. Good luck, I like your channel cheers Michael
You've attracted the attention of a Porsche technician since 1998, who is a qualified technician and trainer on all Porsche cars including Carrera GT and 918 spyder, and high voltage. The way you are working on the engine is painful to watch. Please get the right tools when reassembling. As for the cylinders you may not need a new block. You overbore the engine and press steel liners in. You won't be able to buy these off the shelf, but it can be done at most reputable engineering shops.
Alters heat, weight, and friction. Don’t listen to this guy Mat. I’m the real professional.
Lets bump this!
“You’ve attracted the attention of a Porsche technician” please listen to yourself 😫🤣
Lol
Can he not run it without that coating better to have wear where rings barely operate than
ring ridge
@Mat Armstrong get in touch with Capricorn Automotive. They may actually be able to help you save the block. We had a similar issue with an Audi RS4 with Nikasil bores and we’re actually able to get the cylinders lined!
You can fit different size pistons/hypereutectic pistons if you do this as well. Looks closed deck, so may have some grace on overboring these cylinders and recoating them.
Boring head on a CNC mill, cut the sleeves so thin you can break the rest off by hand, re-sleeve with interference fit. You don't need a new block, you need a competent machining shop which specialises in engine rebuilts
exactly what i was thinking
I think they've decided that Porsche engines can't survive without the cylinder coating.
Rebuild. I will watch every video. I think you will be in the car MORE than it is worth. But I am committed to watch all of the videos AND so are countless others of your supporters.
