I bought several of each type and taste tested the stick pepperoni sandwich and it was excellent. Has anyone kept them past the best by date and taste tested them yet?
You are correct just about all food products are sealed with mylar, foam, plastic wrap even drink bottles contain it. British Rations are dedicated "boil in the bag" or our own MRE heaters which are activated by water. Guess just no getting away from it. Cheers
+gunz-n-gadgets Update:** they have a chemical smell and taste to them, i think it's the preservative. did not enjoy them at all...... but in a starving situation I guess they would be viable...
Time to find the box I put the ones I bought back in '13-'14 and taste test one or two of them. If I remember, I'll consume them while on camera and toss out some input on what they taste like.......They've been stored in a dark, cool and dry basement in a sealed shipping box.
mumzly1 Yes, they shouldn't be too hard to find (and one can always get them online directly from Bridgford too). I didn't know they were at Walmart, but I know many outdoor/camping-type stores carry them.
They have a pretty bad rep, but I actually like most of them! Of course, I also like nearly ALL MRE menus too, so I guess that says something about my taste! I haven't actually had it, but I will admit that the "Pepperoni Sandwich" is a pretty lame excuse for a "sandwich".
I'm wondering if these civilian MREs packaged by the same companies that do the military MREs are using leftover product that they may have had a glut of to make the civilian MREs. I'm not saying anything bad about the civilian companies. but rather just wondering due to the wide date ranges on the products inside each meal bag. some of the ingredients inside range in age from brand new to more than a year old. also with the same food packaging as the MREs.
--------> PLEASE REPLY! Hi, do you know any army surplus stores or any kind of stores that sells MRE, IMP, or anything thats similar in Toronto, Canada? Or do you know any company that sells these in Canada? Please reply to this message, I really want to try one. Thx :D
Sweet and Sour sure is an odd choice for a sandwich flavor. There are many better choices they could have made. I wonder how a good old fashioned PB&J would turn out?
I agree about it being an odd choice. I would have thought BBQ would have been better--but I think they already have a BBQ chicken sandwich available. I guess they were just trying something "different" for more of a variety. I didn't find it terrible or anything, just not particularly good. Maybe there are people who'd really dig it.
PB&J is entirely possible. Peanut butter on the inner walls to keep the jam in the center from making the bread soggy. Only thing is that the fat in peanut butter (though incredibly shelf stable!!!) may leach into the bread and make it soggy. I've seen MRE's from the late 80's, early 90's that still had good peanut butter. The fats are fully hydrogenated like animal fats like lard. It means they don't go rancid easily. What you need to watch out for is "partially hydrogenated" fats. Those are fats that were previously vegetable fats that weren't saturated (hydrogenated) and so the bonds are easily broken and thus you have rancidity. So to fix that, the manufacturers artificially stabilize the fat by double bonding a carbon in the fatty acid chain. Thus you have a TRANS FAT. No evidence supports that the body knows how to metabolize trans fat. The label may say "0g trans fat" you should still read the label for partially hydrogenated fats. They list 0g because its less than 1g of trans fat. They won't list the mg of fat. Something to watch out for.
So, are these radiation sterilised to attain their shelf-stability? I'd imagine that autoclaving would ruin the bread; and preservatives wouldn't be able to prevent complex (i.e. inhomogenous) foods from going off. I find this channel and the concept of rations in general a fascinating exercise in food preservation.
You've been doing food reviews for awhile now, you can't just say "I don't know how to describe that smell", put it down and leave it at that, lol! Viewers rely on you to describe the texture, smell and taste. 😊
I can only do what I can do. And it's worth mentioning that this video was done a couple of years ago. I didn't quite have as many things to compare things to at the time! When you get right down to it, I'm just someone trying out rations and sharing the experience. I am not, and have never claimed to be, a professional food reviewer.
gschultz9 you're completely justified in pointing out this is an old review. I didn't look at the date until after writing (I had added many of your videos to my 'watch later" list - out of order), but decided to keep my comment up, as (though I know you have worked on your editing/length of reviews), I still feel you could work a bit (if you care to) on using more descriptive words for the taste and smell of food items, that are 'sometimes' the main reason why people view. I tried to make my comment come across as lightheaded, while still pointing out something that I feel could be improved, so if I came across as insulting, rude, or having a go at you, I sincerely apologize. It is hard to convey tone in writing. I have been watching a lot of your reviews since I found out about the MRI community (from Emmy, who is the 'gold standard' of explaining food on TH-cam), and find you are one of the most comprehensive & knowledgeable of the ration reviewers, hence not minding sitting through long videos sometimes 😉. That is why I feel you fall a bit short when it actually comes time for the food tasting, as I watch detailed information on date codes, packaging, various forms of heating & some interesting history, then you finally get to the tasting part and 'gloss over it' or find it hard to explain it. I absolutely don't expect you to sound like a professional food reviewer, lol, just some form of descriptive terms would be a great addition 😊. I want to offer/suggest something. I'm going to message you on your FB page about it as I can't find a private message button on the TH-cam mobile app. If you read this and no longer use your FB page and don't see my message, it would be great if you could let me know. I appreciate you taking the time to respond here regardless! ✌
I love your channel.
Is it 13 or 14?
Good video :)
Thank you WE! That means a lot coming from you guys. Love your MRWE's series!
gschultz9 ty buddy :)
Great video thanks
That barbeque one looks delicious....
Fantastic!
I bought several of each type and taste tested the stick pepperoni sandwich and it was excellent.
Has anyone kept them past the best by date and taste tested them yet?
+Admiral Preparedness That's a good question. Since they're a relatively new product (from the last few years) I don't know if anyone's done that yet.
Am i the only one who gets the munchies when a new MRE video is uploaded? Lol.
I do every time lol
same here!!!
when im watching gschultz9 videos i everytime bring some food :D
Nope I think most of us eat while watching
They're also in the MOD 12-hr ratpack; those ratpacks are available commercially from Vestey.
Heating plastic??
This isn't plastic :P
It's a mylar type package.
gundog4314
mylar contains PET...which is a thermoplastic.

Long life hot pockets.
Pretty much!
I love your reviews. Thank you for sacrificing your taste buds and your digestive system for the greater good of mankind. Keep up the good work!
Just picked up a few packs of the beef, they were marked down to $2.50
+gunz-n-gadgets Update:** they have a chemical smell and taste to them, i think it's the preservative. did not enjoy them at all...... but in a starving situation I guess they would be viable...
they are in the mre's in denmark i think.
Is there any long term effects of eating MRE frequently?
Bonerific0 constipation and certain nutrient deficiencies usually, if you solely ate them for an extended period of time.
When does he say "firat"?
Where do you buy the genuine mre

Isn’t it amazing how the bread doesn’t get soggy? That shit can’t be good for a persons body. I always thought they tasted damn good though.
Great review!
Can you make at least each week one mre
I know the walmart by my house has the beef bbq sandwiches, so I'm assuming they carry them all over?
mumzly1 Yes, they shouldn't be too hard to find (and one can always get them online directly from Bridgford too). I didn't know they were at Walmart, but I know many outdoor/camping-type stores carry them.
They have a very limited selection, but yeah, they're there along with the Mountain House freeze dried entrees. (I think mountain house is right??)
Just caught up to this vid G. I managed to get my hands on a few if these recently, they arent half bad!
They have a pretty bad rep, but I actually like most of them! Of course, I also like nearly ALL MRE menus too, so I guess that says something about my taste! I haven't actually had it, but I will admit that the "Pepperoni Sandwich" is a pretty lame excuse for a "sandwich".
gschultz9 i am currently working on getting one each of their meat based offerings, will show them off if it happens.
Been watching your vids for a while now. Keep up the good work!
when are you going to try the LRP
Bridgford bread is in many different countries rations. It must be an amazing product that's hard to replicate.
i'd buy them by the case from bridgford themselves, they only have a 1 case minimum order.
i have some brigford stuff ive never eaten yet
Good review as always.
Dear sir, one question for my curiosity, is all MRE contents any food preservative? Many thanks in answer, have a nice day.
Let`s just say that I`m a bit terrified by this "bread" that doesn`t go bad for many years.
aserta Sadly thats true
Everything is a poison. It just depends on how much you take.
Think of hardtack essentially bread but can last for decades or longer than you have teeth! lol
gschultz9 why is it so hard to find mres?
Jesse Thomas try searching on ebay
Your so humble man, I've been watching for awhile now. Get some energy into the video man lol
Sorry, that's pretty much how I make the videos. Check out the "MRE and a 40 oz" video for a change of pace.
gschultz9 I checked it out lol. But I was messing with you about the more energy thing. I love all of your reviews, I just wish I had an MRE to try.
Breakfast lunch and dinner

I wouldn't have heated it with the oxygen absorption pack
When can we expect the LRP review?
Can
When i first met my future X-wife she was mislabeled as " Shelf Stable "
I found out a bit later she was not.
Got to look at the ingredients !
I am hungry.
wait so is it gundog4313 or gundog4314?
Whoops. It's gundog4314. Changed it.
I feel awkwardly good when you cut these buns
