    Nice concept for back yard orchards, i did this for my fruit trees for the last 12 years didn't realize it was OK to do this, i just wanted as many verities as i could stuff in a limited space. i thought it was of poor judgment on my part to stuff trees in tight proximity, but had no other option. your project has made my day!

    I planted a couple of Fig trees very close together and have had a wonderful experience. Really appreciated this info!

    These would be awesome for the urban setting huh? Very excited to try something like this. Planted a cherry, apricot, two plums and a pear tree, hopefully they all make it past their first winter!

    I have my stone fruits, apples, pears, figs and Japanese Persimmons planted with hazelnuts in between. Trees are at a 8 ft distance from each other with 16 ft between roes. I can add more later if needed 😉

    @figgardener You can lay a fig tree down, and grow a hedge from it.

    Thank you for that information. The more that I learn about fig tress and the durability and uniqueness of them the more that I am convinced that I need to know more. Your feedback which is much appreciated has spurred more creative thought.
    Thank you!

    Tom, really great videos! I have two different semi-dwarf pears: Conference and Williams bon de Chretien). The maximum planting distance i have vailable at the desired location is only 10ft. Is it better to plant them 10 ft apart, or plant them both in the same hole? Thanks a million...

    • @DaveWilsonTrees

      I'd space them 5 feet and plant three successively ripening peaches.

    Do I understand correctly that planting several trees close together prevents the trees from reaching their full height? Or are the trees pruned to stay short.

    • @redemptiverevelation
      @redemptiverevelation 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They must be pruned in the first few years to train smaller to the desired size

    In your video above, do you plant 4 semi-dwarf trees in one hole, or 4 standard size trees? Assuming one plants 4 trees in a single hole and would prune the trees to the same height regardless of the trees' natural size, will the standard size tree yield more fruit than a semi-dwarf tree?

    Isn't there an issue with disease formation as well as transmission when planting so close together?
    Thank you

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bacteria and disease issues are active when inoculum and proper weather conditions co-exist. No matter what the spacing is make sure to prune for light exposure and air movement.

    What's shipping look like nowadays? And what fruit trees do you have that you would recommend for shade and some fruit. I'm in south Georgia.?

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stone fruit really needs 6 hours of direct sunlight at least, and the more the better. Blueberries can be grown in partial shade.

    I really would like to plant fruit trees so close, primarily plum. Is it advisable, should I be looking for a specific rootstock? I am in Scotland with an acre of land which has a few old plum trees but they are dying off. I am also interested in growing blueberries in pots.

    Are all of these on dwarf rootstock? I would like to try on lovell but wonder if the pruning involved is more work than its worth. Thoughts?

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We offer a variety of natural genetic dwarf fruit trees, but standard varieties can’t be dwarfed by rootstocks. Even semi-dwarf rootstocks will grow a 16 foot tall tree. Pruning is easy when you keep on it. Let it go, and you create more work.

      @@DaveWilsonTrees does severe summer pruning of peaches (or 3 in 1 hole planting) to keep everything within reach delay fruiting or affect fruit size?

    • @matts4381
      @matts4381 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveWilsonTrees In several of your videos the Dave Wilson presenter says "dont let the rootstock determine the height of the tree" "Choose the rootstock for its other characteristics like soil types and disease resistance" and that the tree can be maintained at 7 feet with a 4 foot spread with summer pruning. He says he likes trees that dont require a ladder and that any rootstock can achaive that. I'm wondrring if I can in fact do this with lovell or if the labor of constant summer pruning isnt worth it and cutting a tree back that hard will affect fruit production and size. thoughts?

    • @matts4381
      @matts4381 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      here it is - see 7 minutes 45 seconds in when talking about rootstock - th-cam.com/video/ZV2kr50K7Is/w-d-xo.html would you agree with this? I am not sure I can find dwarf rootstock for the stone fruit I want and have ordered on lovell. If this works I will do intensive planting and summer prune as this video instructs but want a 2nd opinion.

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Gene parrott sr These are all examples of high density plantings. Trees planted close, about 4 feet apart works best, and kept small by summer pruning. Keep in mind successive ripening varieties so you have an extended harvest from 4 trees in the space where one full size tree might go.

    One wouldn't have to worry about the moths and go to the trouble of using nylon socks if they were to underplant with the correct support species. Other support species would also feed nitrogen into the ground so fertilizer wouldn't be needed. Many supports are also edible so you get multiple layers of a food forest.

    • @jameswilson7577

      I am very curious. What support species repel coddling moths?

    Being in Miami Florida, I know mango's, avocado, and lychee grow very well.
    So one thought was to plant condo mango's in one cluster, next cluster avocado, and the third cluster lychee. All three of these tree's have potential to be very tall and wide, do you think they could be managed and fruit bearing with the high density method? I didn't see mango and or lychee on the web site.
