After the 8th (somewhat disastrous) season of the HBO show, and as the years after the 5th book's release kept accumulating, it felt more and more like bringing up one's enthusiasm for ASOIAF risked some angry and scornful responses. I am happy to see more and more people openly embracing their love for Martin's masterful series. Though I doubt we'll ever find out how the series ends, I'm still very happy to have read the books. It was great to hear your thoughts on this one, Johanna!
I've been surprised by how positive the response has been to this read-along, which consists of new readers and old fans! I guess there's been enough space since the show, and maybe there's been a surge of new fans since House of the Dragon, which I have not yet watched. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on this book since I know you used to teach it in your course! Thanks, Philip!
That's a very good point Philip. Do you think though that it's over blown praise due to the fact the intricacies of the world building and plot will never come to final fruition? I wrestle with this question. I don't think that it necessarily deserves the attention it gets. Due to the sole fact that reading it demands your attention and theory pondering that won't ever get answered. It's a great idea of a series but without any true finality and explanation of the plot threads does it deserve to be treated as a successful book series? I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong but left a sour taste in my mouth after the show and Martin selling certain book rights. Thoughts?
@@Jistarii My main thought is that I’m glad I read the five published books in ASOIAF, but that it is indeed seriously flawed as a series because it’s unfinished. There are unfinished works of literature that we still study and admire, such as The Canterbury Tales, so it wouldn’t be a first.
Ah, a fellow tree/house climbing enthusiast! Something I still indulge in sometimes, and I'd totally be doing what Bran was if I grew up in a castle! I know I'll love this series when I get to it - I loved the show even to the end - only my internal time organizer won't let me start it until Winds of Winter has a publishing date...and who knows on that score.
Bran's chapter is one of the best in the book! There's also a great one of Arya running around the castle at King's Landing. I hope that the publishing date arrives so you can start enjoying the books!
Great Review Johanna! Im a first time reader of GoT but I did watch the show through its entirety. I think because of that I'm not feeling this sense of suspense because I can expect what's coming down the road but there is this sense of dread. I'm also able to just sit down and enjoy Martin's beautiful writing. Can't wait for the discussion.
That's fantastic! It's making me think of Bookborn's video about spoilers not spoiling the fun. It's wonderful to be able to appreciate what Martin offers even if you know what's ahead. Thanks, Alicia!
Hi Johanna. Heartbroken to have missed out on this read along. I'm overdue for new glasses and have had vision challenges for the past two months. I've had to delay buying new ones as my current insurance won't cover them. Funds will be available soon. I'm about to finish The Labyrinth of the Spirits by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (a five-star experience for me). February is devoted to Black History Month, this year the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass. GRRM will have to wait, darn it. Glad you loved it, again.
I'm sorry to hear about your glasses! I've had some eye struggles since last year, and that's no fun at all. I hope you enjoy whatever your February reads and ASOIAF when the time is right!
GRRM was the first author I read who played with my emotions; loving characters that I had originally hated, as well as the other way around. Thanks for another great video review 🙏.
This was so much fun to watch! My sister was also a tree-climber, so I couldn’t help but think of her as I read those scenes. Your passion really shines through in this discussion, Johanna! I’m looking forward to watching the Live Shows; full series discussion book by book sounds so fun!
Thank you, Sarah! That's so cool about your sister! I once broke my arm falling out of tree 😅. I remember imagining the tree was a castle though, so I think those scenes really spoke to me! 😁
Great video Johanna. I remember hearing about the series around the same time and loving the books. It's been along time since I first read them but maybe a re-read is in order in the near future.
Great review! I read this back in 2000 the first time and really picked up on the character point of view you mentioned. It wasn't that it hadn't been done before, but it was always a bit more omniscient in other epic fantasy books. Martin really focused in on the character and slammed that character's POV right in your face. He forced you into that character's head with his deft use of chapter breaks. It was unique enough at the time and definitely kept my interest throughout. Looking forward to the live streams...
Thank you, Jarrod! That's such a great point about the closeness Martin makes the reader feel with the characters! I wonder if Martin was responsible for making that writing trend popular in present-day fantasy-we take it for granted nowadays. That's a fantastic observation!
I clearly recall the day I found this series, too. Must've been about 2006. I had gotten far enough in my own writing journey that I thought I'd better check out what was hot in my chosen genre (I was pretty clueless for a guy attempting to write a fantasy series). I drove to a large chain bookstore at nearby Notre Dame University and asked the clerk in the SFF department what she recommended (as being new and hot). She did not hesitate. Without a word, she spun and led me straight to GoT and put a copy in my hands. I considered her decisiveness to be a good sign, and it was! It's funny how often I've heard over the years that meeting Bran was when acquaintance readers got hooked. Good thoughts about the female perspective in the series, as well as on mercy, family, empathy, and morality. Excellent video essay! Guess it's getting to be time for a reread.
What a cool story about how you first came in contact with A Game of Thrones! I do wonder if it affected audiences more back then since we didn’t see as many main protagonists killed off in the first book. That was such a jaw-dropping moment back then, and I’m surprised when I see modern readers not as shocked by that. It still gets to me! I didn’t realize that Bran’s chapter hooked many other readers as well. My husband is reading the book for the first time and his favorite chapter was one when Arya was running through the castle at King’s Landing. Nothing like being a kid in a castle! Haha! Thank you so much, Vaughn!
@@Johanna_reads Same here in regard to being shocked! As well as being surprised by the lack of shock these days. I remember the moment so well. I happened to be home sick, reading on the couch. I actually threw the book across the room (something I'd never actually done before). Of course I almost immediately retrieved it and kept reading, because... Martin! I think I read him for about two months straight after that, catching up with what was out at the time. My other sick feeling came with finding that GRRM had utilized lion and wolf sigils representing powerful families. I'd done the same, based on the powerful Amal and Wulthi families of the Goths, and I was positive that everyone would think I'd "copied" Martin. Over 15 years later, even after the popularity of the show, I've never had a single reader mention it. Funny, the things we writers get twisted over. :)
@@vaughnroycroft999 I love that you threw the book! 😂 Have you read any Malazan books? Allen has a fun story about throwing Deadhouse Gates, book 2, across the room on his first read. I wonder if you would have the same reaction. 😂 I can understand having that feeling, but I think many readers could understand lion and wolf sigils being a thing. I know my family has a sigil from Spain, and now I'll have to check if there's an animal on it. Haha!
@@vaughnroycroft999 Vaughn, you're so right about getting twisted up over stuff like that. I felt the same way back when I used to write. I'm glad you stuck with it though! 😀
Such an interesting breakdown of AGOT. Always fascinating to hear what scenes stick out to different readers and why. Loved the random anecdote about you connecting with Bran's love of climbing things.
Thank you, Rodger! I think Martin is brilliant with everything he does in this series, but at the end of the day, I just want to be a kid exploring a castle! 😄
I also liked to climb trees when I was a little kid. I can't imagine doing it today though, LOL. Yes, the dramatic irony was great. Great discussion here.
I just finished A Game of Thrones a few weeks ago and really loved it. I’ve managed to avoid almost all spoilers over the decades. Despite my hesitation about starting another series which may never be finished, I decided now is the time, and I’m very much looking forward to continuing on with the rest.
I love hearing how you heard of the series and what made you pick it up. The part that hooked you is the first glimpse of what we get with corruption/betrayal and it’s a great scene! Good perspective on the blind spots too… I feel like if I ever had kids I would want them to read this to show “see look at Sansa and think of her next time you feel like you know everything!”
Thank you! It wasn’t even the crazy thing that happened at the end of that chapter that hooked me, but it certainly shocked the heck out of me! We’re going to have to have a huge talk about Sansa in the second live show. I half considered subtitling it: What is wrong with Sansa? 😂 I have some thoughts about that character!
I've read the first book but I never got to the second one. The entire series is so intimidating, but I really want to continue reading it. Thanks for this video, you made me want to pick it up again. =)
Oh wow! I didn’t realize you had read the first book! They are very chunky books with many points of view, so I can understand if that builds some intimidation. I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up again!

When this book came out it got crazy hyped in those newsletters, but I was a broke teenager and didn't want to shell out all that dough for a hardcover. So I waited it out for about a year until I stumbled across it at my local library in Vegas. I thought Martin was an interesting writer but I kept wondering where the hell are all the wizards at. What a wonderful video, I loved hearing about your first experience with this series and how it compared to this re-read. Interestingly enough, it was that same Bran chapter that also completely hooked me in, so I loved hearing you talk about that! I have watched the entire show, so I already picked up on some of the foreshadowing, but I have a feeling that there is still a ton that is going over my head and it honestly really excites me that there is just so much to sink your teeth into here. I was surprised to find out that Dany was one of my least favourite POVs here, because I loved her story so much in the show. Maybe that will change in the later books, but for now I was most invested in Bran, Jon and Tyrion's POVs.
